- Summary: Profane clerics, evil druids, Kulthian artifice, and shapeshifting kidnappers. Not so different from the city's mercenaries, Mama Bula's lot runs in with all types. After having a contracted employee vanished and mutilated, the kids are keen on revenge. A job postings with the guild suggests a two-pronged attack. Surely they mean to capture and turn over the fiends to local authorities. Definitely! It's law and order all the way!

The kobold clerk has been returned to the Serrielite temple for weeks now. He's fine, really, and he's been back about his work after a short stay at the Soldier's Defense. His tail is reattached and there's no long-lasting side effects. Really. Don't worry about it.
Alexandria is a dangerous place and things happen. People move on with their lives and there's no long-lasting side effects to worry about. Life goes on.
People have friends, though, and personal entanglements bring attachment. Attachments breed vendettas when someone is wronged unjustly. Cesseli may be fine (really, he's fine!) bu that doesn't mean that those close to him are willing to forget the way the kobold was wronged.
So here you are.
The world is dark, foggy, and close. Even the open streets feel like an oppressive, narrow corridor with the thick precipitation closing in from every direction. Integrity C. Truefeather and Mama Bula's kids have done their research and tracked the shapeshifters to a base in the residential districts. Mingling unnoticed amongst the more permanently-shaped humanoids of the working class Alexandrians.
Kerry-Anne and Gitlweet Blustrunk stand near Jay and Nemori, considering a rather unremarkable facade of a three-storey, singe-family home.
The gobber wears his black robes and pruple wrap, wringing his arms around his metal staff. The taller, muscular human woman is in her second-hand breastplate, glowering and shifting from foot to foot.
Reinforcements are on the other side of the building, waiting in an alleyway.
Jay has been helping track down the faceless stalkers.
"Well..." Integrity says, contemplating the building, "A least one, or two of them work out of this building, allegedly. It's a solid allegedly, the information source was reliable and I've checked it out. The problem is recognizing them. They probably aren't alone."
"While we have the exits covered, it will be challenging if a lot of people come out." The black, white and blue egalrin turns to observe Nemori, "I could quietly take a look around first, but do you have other suggestions? Also... what's the big plan? Capture them for the guard? Take back the cylinder? Hurt them so much that several weeks from now they'll be 'fine, just fine', too?"
It's not like there are methods a former Priestess might know about to pass those weeks. The egalrin re-adjusts his feathers.
Nemori silently notes Jay didn't list 'kill them' as one of the options.. an option she is sure Kerry-Anne and Git must be considering. Yet rather than say as much, as she is equally sure the thouht at least came to the egalrin before it was quickly dismissed, the priestess assumes more of a 'what are you asking me for' expression, blinking slowly and deliberately. "Capturing them for the guard would require also having proof, yes? Which would mean handing over the cylinder, if they have it here? Is that something you would be ready to do?" After all, there was a reason Jay was holding on to it before.
The shadow elf turns her gaze upon the two 'kids' of Mama Bula, suggesting the pair might not let Jay leave with it, either. "I suppose it may be dependant on whether or not the creatures are willing to surrender.. and how far you are willing it to take it, Integrity."
Kerry-Anne has her crescent moon-shaped shield strapped to one arm. Her expression is grim, only half-hid by the sallet helmet she wears. She's been unusually quiet as the forces gather around the cantilevered home and the leather of her gloves strain as she opens and closes her fists. The gauntlet opposite her shield is studded with short, blunt spikes. She nods, though not directly at egalrin or mul'niessa.
"Tamzin, Odundik, and Heady will make sure no one escapes out the back," observes the eldanari woman. Her empty hand rests on the pommel of her sheathed blade. "Dunny is covering the roof. Tammy and Heady have the alley. Everyone has bells; we'll hear them if something goes wrong."
Git looks up, glancing between Jay and Kerry-Anne. There's a soft-glowing, semi-transparent set of hide armor resting over his robes. A simple magician's spell for protection. He looks across the street, dipping the top of his metallic staff towards the front door.
"We, uh... we make sure that we capture them, right? We can find out who wanted the thing they took from you-- maybe we get that back?-- and then we know who's stirring up trouble for us." He glances down, adjusting his pouches and pockets of reagents. "If we treat them poorly, we're no better than they are, right?"
Even from across the narrow street, it's hard to make out the facade of the other building. The fog is thing and lazy. At least it's not raining.
"Well it is possible to make them surrender." Integrity says, and then some hesitation enters his voice, "Well, if their heads are normal, but they're shape shifters so they might be extra rubbery."
His beak clacks together, "And, well, there is knowing who is guilty and then there's proving it in a court of law, and anything we might assert would be very easily picked apart if I was on the defense, so... taking them to the guards is out."
He skips over 'murder them outright', again.
"Finding out who wanted the thing, and who is making trouble, seems the best plan. Do you have any spells that would help Nemori? Hold person, or charm person, or sleep, to make the capture go easier?"
He stares across the narrow street, examining the building for the best entrance.
Nemori looks vaguely.. sheepish? at the question, looking away from Jay to regard Mama Bula's pair again. "Capture. I have.. some spells which may help. But they are of limited duration," she admits. Eyes more on Git now, though her words remain for Jay. "Capture and hand over to Mama Bula, I suppose, is your best option." And if the creatures end up dead after that, then it's out of Nemori's hands, right? So, the other matter.
"You are the better sneak," Nemori admits to Jay, gesturing to the heavier armour Kerry-Ann wears and to Git.. in general. "But when you are too far ahead, you are vulnerable if they see you without us being close to support you. And unless things have changed, you have no means of messaging us without returning."
"I could caw like a bird." Jay suggests.
Git glowers at Nemori and then glances at Jay. "I can go! I have spells!" He pulls his shawl up to wear it look a hood, clearing his throat and holding his not-staff-hand out wide as he gestures. The gobber-talk is frantic, pounding, and insistent. The fog pulls up like a hungry beast, swalloning the goblin and disappearing him from sight.
"-See!-" he nearly growls at Nemori. She can't, obviously. There's some more rapid-fire goblin spoken under his breath and then he clears his throat. "(test.)" he whispers for all to hear. "(test-two. one, two, three. it's git, can you hear me?)"
His whisper feels like it's coming from right next to your ear.
Kerry-Anne gives Nemori an unkind look and steps closer, towering over the mul'niessa. It's a power move as much as it's meant to be protective.
"You two go," the eldanar tells Jay. "Call if you need us. Or have Git signal when you're ready."

Nemori very briefly narrows her eyes.. but then just as quickly her expression goes complacent. Or at least ambivalent. So quickly the tightening expression may have just been a trick of the shadows. She follows this up with a placating shrug towards Kerry-Anne. "As you will," she says, apparently unwilling to put her foot down in this case. She even takes a small step back from the large, Eldanari woman, and looks Jay's way. "Be careful. Robert will be upset if I return with you injured."

There's no trouble identifying the entrance to the home but the facade is overgrown with thorny vines. It looks like the place has been abandoned for years. Definitely stands out compared to the neighboring buildings. Vines that will rustle and whatnot if they are pulled aside but there aren't bells, they aren't crunchy and old."
"Well..." The bluejay says, inhaling and fluffing up, then flipping his cloak around, "Let's have a look. Git, stay by my tail, you can touch it if you need to signal me."
With the instructions given he hunches and darts across the street. He hugs the wall of the building, around the corner and up to the next wall, then across to the door. It's covered in creepy vines. Creeping Vines. Thorny vines. The place looks like it has been abandoned for years; it's quite decrepit compared to the neighbouring buildings.
His bold black, white, and blue patterns break up well with the mists and shadows, obscuring his form. Egalrin footfalls are odd and quiet compared to others. He crouches at the door, pulling some tools from his buckler and getting to work on the lock.
"I will." Kerry-Anne smolders, looking down at Nemori, stepping forward to match her retreat as Jay and Git move away. "I see you judging us, 'priestess,' standing around half the time with your teeth in your mouth." She takes another half-step, eclipsing Nemori's view into the street. "Whatever pinned that chip to your shoulder isn't our problem. Knock it off or I'll do it for you."
She seethes, the situation and her general feelings about the elven woman mixing unfavorably. The eldanari woman reaches out, deliberately, and brushes at the priestess' narrow shoulders. "Hmn," she grunts.
Across the street, Jay slinks amongst the fog to find the front of a building that looks to have been abandoned for years. He know it hasn't.
"(i'll whisper,)" Git tells Jay from somewhere close by. "(i won't let anyone sneak up behind you, integrity. i promise!)"

Another brief flash of annoyance; unhappy with having her view obstructed, blocking Jay from sight, Nemori looks up.. and up.. at Kerry-Anne. With no more room to back up, she's forced to remain within reach and subject to the large woman's reach. Once again, however, her expression melts away quite easily, assuming one leaning towards innocence. "I am no judge," she protests, voice shifting a little bit towards coaxing. Before it stops, regaining its sharper edge. "I am but a witness. A witness to all of the times I and my friends have cleaned up your mistakes. Rushed to your aid. Healed you from the brink of death. Attempted to keep your actions from completely sabotaging the tasks laid before us. Like you are doing right now. If you wish to discuss this further.. This is not. The. Time."

Integrity keeps working away at the lock. Small, fine details hidden in a complex hole evoke some ancient instincts for him. He takes an odd, mithril string from his shield and incorporates it into his efforts.
The magic trap is disabled.
"Got it. Going in." Jay whispers, carefully popping the door then easing it open while he looks through the gap.
The egalrin pulls apart the magic sigil wrapped around the lock, disabling the spell before it can alert the individuals inside. The mechanism securing the door is child's play by comparison. Inside, the room is overrun with the same vines weaving across the floor, coiling up the walls, and swallowing the sparse furniture. The vegetation glitters, too, as if threaded with metallic veins.
The bluejay is faced with a short wall decorated with coats. Lots of coats. And boots lined up along the floor. A whole family's worth of shoe-wear. A table big enough to sit four in a familiar closeness takes up the space to his left. A glowing crystal floats at the middle of the table and lights the room like the bobbing ghost of a torch. Kit is piled up atop the tables: bags, pouches, tools, and weapons.
Other than the roots, there's no living thing.
Kerry-Anne gives Nemori a little shove, pushing her to one side and taking her place against the corner of the wall closest to the street. "I forgot," she grunts, "black-elves don't have mothers to wipe their baby-bottoms." She's not looking at the mul'niessa as she squints through the fog. "... maybe if someone picked you up once when you fell--"
She stops as Jay gets the door open and starts to move inside.
"(we're going in...)" Git whispers to the two have a genial conversation nearby.
Nemori simply doesn't have the bulk or the stability to do much more than stagger a half-step sideways at Kerry-Anne's shrug. If the eldanari had intended to put her to the ground, it's unlikely Nemori would still be standing. Still, her eyes glint murderously, briefly, before turning back towards the door and the two infiltrators. Well, the one. Obviously she can't see the other one. She falls silent as well. Perhaps it is because with Jay and Git heading inside, things are getting serious. Perhaps it's because any talk about her own mother is something she doesn't wish to explore, because if she did it would reveal yet another gaping divide between her and everyone else.
Or perhaps Nemori is simply done talking.
Jay slips in through the door, careful to step between the vines on the floor, staring at the wall, seeking the presences hinted at by the number of seats at the table, and the number of shoes. And that pile of treasure.
"(are they pretending to be mimics, or the vines on the walls)" He talks to his shadow while he examines the area for signs of life, footpaths through the foliage, a cooling mug of kaffe.

The vines are new and over a lot of traffic-sign. Whoever was living here didn't care too much about keeping the place tidy. They've also done damage to the structure, planks, etc. The drape to the right is a pantry/kitchen and the door is a water closet. The stairs go up and down. More dirtiness on the descending steps.
"They're inside," Kerry-Anne observes without looking back at Nemori. She brings her arms together beneath her shield and withdraws her free hand with an ancient-looking punching-blade extending from her gauntlet. The brass blade has patina dulling its finish but the edge shows a matte-black edge. The weapon glows like a soft, yellow sunrise.
"Try not to 'witness' too loudly behind me," she grunts and crosses the street.
Inside, Jay hears a tiny goblin gasp behind him. "(deathvine,)" comes the whisper that he shares with the group. "(a blight caused by the presence of some undead. though... this has metal in it? the risen tend to be animated by energies from the lower, negatives planes in a wholly magical/profane process... there isn't much metal unless...)"
The little goblin's academic ramblings fill the air like the fog in the streets.
The taller woman probably hears the deliberate sniff Nemori grants as response to the suggestion.. and with her back turned, probably misses the daggers being stared at her, but Nemori otherwise says nothing, instead trailing after the eldanari as quietly as she might. Which is, sadly, only as quietly as the grace inherent in her people can offer... falling far short of the deliberate training those such as Jay have done. But that's why she didn't go first.
So the shadow elf tags along behind, drawing her rapier only once inside the building.. and due to Git's warning, giving the vines as wide a berth as she can manage.
"(Thanks. I'll not step on it.)" Jay whispers into the fog. He's got no way to warn Nemori about this, but she's smart. She should recognize plants. He's thinking of her superior knowledge and not her elf heritage.
And as it turns out, she heard.
He pulls a sap from a pocket on his vest and moves in, towards the stairs with only a brief detour to glance in the pantry and assure it's empty.
One at the stairs he examines the dirt for any evidence of traffic, and gazes down the steps. It's going to get darker underground, his mist sight won't be up to it, and light will give him away.
"(Well, let's see how far down we can go.)"
It's dark down the stairs.
The stairs are a tight spiral heading both up and down. A jotun would struggle. Larger khazadi, too. There's light from the landing above but pitch black below.
"I could go." Kerry-Anne is inside the room now, not far from Jay. She has her punching dagger and the blade is bright as any torch. She makes an effort to step between the vines but her feet are big and her bulk is considerable; some of the vegetation squelches and turns to pulp beneath her boots.
"I... I can see in the dark but... I don't want to be first," Git is right next to the water closet. Judging by his tone he's wringing his hands around the staff of his metallic staff.
GAME: Nemori casts Light. Caster Level: 7 DC: 14
To her credit, Nemori does her best to keep from looking too 'judging' as she pulls a coin from her pocket.. not the Ceinaran one. A simple, beaten copper coin. She utters a simple orison upon it and it flares to light, as bright as a torch but with a steadier glow. She closes it in her fist to briefly douse the light, then opens her fingers again and offers it to Kerry-Anne, more than happy to let the large woman lead.
Maybe she'll trip and fall down the stairs.
Not if the bird-man goes first.
"Okay." Jay intercepts the coin heading for Kerry Ann. He pops it in his beak, where he can bite it on the edge, hold it near the point. He turns his head to one side, then the other, watching the glow play over his eyes. It also makes a barrier of light that's challenging to see past.
He palms the coin instead. "I'll go down first, Kerry Ann, you can follow, I'll stay at the edge of the light cast." He nods at girl's glowing blade. "If I stop and signal I have seen them before they see me. If I pull out the light, they've seen me."
Seems simple enough, should cover every circumstance. "Git, you can be behind me. Stop me if you see something." Perfect.
Kerry-Anne looks around and then shifts back when he armored skirt is disturbed by an invisible goblin hand. She steps to one side and pushes the boss of her shield into Nemori's stomach to back her up, too.
"Fine," she agrees. She looks from the egalrin to the mul'niessa and then glances down at the empty space between she and Jay. "Keep us safe, Git. Tammy worked hard to get you that book. And the tutor Mama found wasn't cheap." Her words are stern but she offers the empty air an affectionate smile.
"... I'll... yeah, I know. I'll do it!" Git promises.

The spiral staircase descends a short distance into the residence's root cellar. The lighting from Kerry-Anne's blade struggles to wrap around the stairs and reach the lower floor-- but it's better than nothing.
The cellar has taken on its descriptor; choked from wall-to-wall with the glinting vines and roots. Bodies lay atop or are tangled through the invading vegetation, half-rotten and decorated with jagged bonespurs.
To the egalrin's right, the "roof" sags in from a hole, dangling with a desiccated curtain of the narrow, dried vines. To his left, around the wall, is the sound of distant running water. Beneath the sound of water is the ragged gasp of a small creature just out of sight.
A broken jotun figure rests propped in the corner of the room. Her chest, shoulder, and neck are a knot of twisted bone tendrils. She wears fine leathers that are scorched and torn, and clutches a runed tree-trunk of a club that might weigh more than Git does wet.
Half of her face is torn away to reveal dried muscle and exposed bone. Its not active currently but Jay is sure it's not just a corpse.
GAME: Jay rolls cmb: (5)+4: 9
Jay halts immediately upon seeing the corpses. Hopefully they are corpses, although the way they reached that state is unsettling. Better not nap around death vines, and check his feathers for burrs once he's out. He raises a hand, then four, maybe five fingers. It's hard to tell and he's not sure.
He gestures for Git to follow, then crosses the room to the space between one of the bodies and the Jotun. He looks to where Git -isn't-, then lays his hand on the chest of the corpse, ready to flinch.
There is no movement.
He turns to his next target, the Jotun and her club. He creeps closer. He leans, reaching for the weapon. He grabs at the club. She tightens her grip.
<OOC> Jinks says, "The raggedy gnome-looking guy in the corner tries to blast Jay with a spell and misses miserably." <OOC> Jinks says, "He stands and grabs a spear out from the vines."
A pathetic-looking gnome was trying to catch his breath in the corner there, almost entirely obscured by the deep shadows away from the light sources. Then Jay grabs at the club and the jotun woman awakes. The gnome growls something and makes an arcane gestures.
A green flash fills the room and acid sprays across at the egalrin. It flies wide and scorches the wall, dribbling down in inert clumps to thump on the ground. The little spellcaster stands awkwardly, tugging a barbed spread free of the tangling vines as he finds his feet.
<OOC> Jay says, "Git would like k/rel to see if 'command undead' would work on the jotun, and if so, cast that." <OOC> Jay says, "Is that a hostile enough action that it drops his invisibility?" GAME: Jay rolls 1d20+11: (15)+11: 26 (Git, Knowledge/Religion) <OOC> Jay nods, "I think he'd want to keep his invisibility if possible, but there's only a couple things he could do. The jotun is a juju zombie. Zoom-zoom undead. Resistant to mage magic and slashing, as well as channel resistance. Generally tougher, faster, extra armour and harder to create than a traditional zombie.
As the acid sizzles, Git scoots along the wall to the foot of the corpse. Near the egalrin, not standing in any of the over spray. Invisibly, he checks the gnome and the Jotun.
He should act! Except... his position is exposed. It would be better if Kerry Ann was in the room. She could handle the Jotun! Maybe even the gnome.
Rope, or command. He could tie up the gnome, or command the juju zombie, which will be fast and tough. He doesn't want his invisibility drop, not while he's the only target. The second target.
He'll wait till Kerry Ann arrives.

Motion brings the flinch. Jay swings in response. There's a solid thwack!
Saps aren't useful against undead.
The massive jotun corpse ignores the slap from the egalrin's bludgoen as it rises, jerking back the trunk from his attempt to relieve her of it. Empty sockets flare to life with a swirling black smoke and bones pop and snap as she twists. The thick log comes down, flashing and slamming into Jay and sending a few loose feathers flying.

He staggers back, dropping his sap, fumbling for his estoc and drawing it in one long thrust. A strike that pierces in the centre of the Juju Jotun. The point stabs deep, black blood seeping lugubriously out.
"Ah... ah..." Jay stammers, "This isn't going according to plan, allegedly."

Upon hearing things escalate, Kerry-Anne growls then double times it down the stairs, shouldering off of the wall within the tight confines until she reaches the bottom. A quick scan reveals Jay pulling his rapier free as the giant zombie rises... Git is still nowhere in sight. But having an idea of what the goblin may be waiting for, the eldanar raises her shield and strides forward to interpose herself between the monster and her friend.
Nemori isn't quite as quick to rush down... mostly because she doesn't want to get in the larger woman's way. When Kerry-Anne has cleared around one of the stair corners, she follows.. and upon her own glance at the basement room, summons her dancing, rapier wielding ally to fill in the gap to, at least for the moment, pen the giant in.
to be continued...
