  • Title: Shambling Jungle V - Warriors
  • Summary: To arrest Vabon Redfallow by challenging exile Xioyah, the team has established a plan of playing in on challenging their Sith-makar foe. But in order to do so, and to guarantee that Xioyah will listen to 'Softskins', they first need to show themselves at least somewhat part of the culture. As such, Harkashan has arranged for them to undergo a Trial amongst the local Warrior Caste near Akochilistli Kuauhtla.

As the sun rises over the canopy of the Am'shere forest, the group is traveling alongside a bluescaled Sith-makar today. Istetl, the rather lean but scarred one, halts before the forest, turning to the group, holding a bunch of rope under their arm, and throws them to the ground.

The edge of the jungle is near the Ziggurat of Akochilistli Kuauhtla, a local Sith-makar community that is only a few hours away from the portal to Alexandria. It is known for its spice-trade most of all.

On Tetli's recommendation, Harkashan had moved away from asking for a Warrior Trial, and instead requested aid from the Hunters instead. Xioyah, the Exile Sith-makar that the group is trying to challenge, was once of Hunters caste. So if they were going to play on their connection to the Sith-makari ways, a challenge borne from those recognized by hunters would fly over more easily than those of a Warrior.

"Today, you will be helping me capture a Quickclaw. I imagine that for most of you, this will be a new experience. Each of you grab a rope. It will be important that when we find one, we bind it with these." The Hunter explains. "I will not help you capture it, but I will instruct. I fear that my wounds prevent me from running as fast as I once did." Istetl explains.

Those particularly perceptive might notice that one of their legs is thinner than the other, and the scales are a bit warped. Signs of a nasty bite that had gotten infected perhaps, or worse.

"It is important for you to understand that a Quickclaw is faster than you, unless it's carrying something like its offspring. So approaching from a tactical position is important here." They remark to the group at large, and wait for them to pick up the ropes. "Normally, I would let you explore this side of the jungle first and get a lay of the land. But as you will be challenging a skilled hunter - I would be doing you a disservice in letting you do so. Xioyah will know the lay of the land better than you. Be prepared for anything."

Geir steps forward to claim a rope for himself, before offering up the rest to the others as they approach. "Be watchful of other dangers while doing this. Thiss one suggests sticking together, and being extremely careful when running."

GAME: Rune rolls bluff: (1)+11: 12 (EPIC FAIL)

The prospect of wandering into the jungles of Am'shere, even among a group of largely familiar and trusted individuals, is more than a bit daunting for Rune. The half-elf bounces on her feet, trying to drive off the anxiety that is threatening to become something worse.

Stepping forward, Rune grabs one of the ropes and slings it behind her, hooking it onto the holster that carries her twin swords. The rogue seems decked out for the occassion, her face marked with a bit of blue tribal paint across her cheeks.

"So... the plan is to find a Quickclaw, then use our group tactics to close it in so it cna't escape, and then capture it." Drawing out her weapons, Rune takes a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "Right. Let's do this."

Just ignore the fact that there is a slight tremble in her fingers, oh and the fact that her eyes are showing just shy of the edge of panic.

Lifting her brows, the super petite Huian, who stands out looking like the kid sister compared to all of these large Sith-Makar, listens as quietly as she can. Hunting. Quickclaw. That sounds... like a nightmare.

She would have much rather had a trial by combat. That's her skillset. But she glances to the rope and inwardly sighs. She will do as best she can, but this is definitely not something she excels at.

A turquoise-scaled sith-makar regards the Hunter as they speak. Her golden eyes are all the more intense as she looks at the Hunter, accented by red paint that matches the angular symbols drawn on her scales. She stands tall, scimitar strapped to her leather belt, and her tail thumps the ground.

Then once the others are speaking, she nods to all gathered here, spreading her arms out. "This one is Cuemoni, Shaman of the Xiuhcoatl tribe."

Her golden eyes flicker over to Rune. "Ay, do not be alarmed nor afraid, dark-haired one. This one is able to negotiate with all creatures of the wilds in addition to spirits," she says. "This one will try and speak to the Quickclaw as we move to get the creature to travel with us willingly. This one is also able to heal a little if anyone is injured. The task is set, and therefore, this one will rise to the challenge."

Schara waited until the others were taking their supplies before stepping forward to take one of the ropes. It took a moment to coil it back up with the use of only one hand, but the artificer managed. "I think that this will most likely be okay." They offer. "But if I can notice something is wrong miss Rune, it must be really bothering you. I'm not going to tell you not to worry, as that likely wouldn't work, but at least stop to take a moment to breathe and collect yourself if needed before we begin."

The artificer turns to the unknown face and waves once. "Peace on your nest, miss Cuemoni. Thank you for coming to help, I'm sure your aid will be very valuable. My name is Schara, before I forget to introduce myself."

Bright sun. Trees. More sunlight. Hunting and ropes - the Dragoon did vastly prefer this alternative over the other challenge, unlike Huian. "This one cannot imagine it being difficult if we trap the creature in." Aelwyn says as he flicks up the rope off the ground, coiling it around his shoulder. With the introductions being made, he bows towards Cuemoni. "Aelwyn, a Dragoon." He introduces himself to her, before he nods towards Geir. "Let us proceed."

The Dragoon walks past Rune and he gives her ankles a light tap with his tail. "Twin, we shan't lose you." He tells her, patting her shoulder. Then he gestures at his eyes "Besides, with a paint like that, even Silver would be intimidated." He flexes his tongue out.

There seems to be an appreciative look in the blue-scaled Sith-makar when Cuemoni speaks up. "It is good to travel with a Shaman possessing such skills." They remark with a lowering of their head. They've noticed the signs of fear on Rune's body, but they are letting this be her own test.

They then step to the side, and motions inwards. "Please. If you work." Letting the team head on into the forest. After all, he will not lead them. And Rune has already succinctly described the task at hand.

"Avoid creatures bigger than a Quickclaw for now." He also warns. "There are larger beasts that stalk these woods. And I fear some of you may not be ready to greet them yet." He adds. As if to punctuate that point, in the distance, the loud creaking of a tree being knocked down, followed by a deep echoeing howl of an enormous beast.

It's far, far in the distance.

The jungle continues to be deeply alive. Creatures calling eachother over great distances. The constant buzz and chirp of bugs and birds.

Shaking her head, Huian steps forward and reaches a hand to place her palm upon Rune's shoulder. That done, she gives a small little grin before she reaches for part of the rope herself.

And then... the sounds of the jungle reach through, and her hand drops to the scabbarded sword tucked into her sash. Still not having spoken, she just peers out into the forest... jungle?

<OOC> Rune says, "Move me to 31, 33, Perception checking for scouting."
GAME: Rune rolls perception: (4)+16: 20

With the introduction of the turquoise-scaled Makari, Rune offers a quick quirk of the lips, "It's not the Quickclaw that I'm worried about." Alas, this is neither the time nor the place to go into her history with the lands of Am'shere and why it had taken weeks of Harkashan's constant badgering for Rune to agree to come on this journey. The others also seem to clue in on the issue. With both support and advice, Rune nods and takes a couple of deep breaths, steeling herself.

I'm Rune." She offers her name to the Shaman, joining others in introduction.

That said, despite her reservations about the whole thing, Rune is the first to head into the jungle, following the path before them that seems easier to follow amongst the trees. However, she stops a short ways in, crouching and peeking between the trees to the South-west.

With multiple Makari behind her, she depends more on their language for communicating, since the clicks and hisses would probably be more familiar to creatures in these Jungles. "Not Quickclaw. Big. Southwest." She tries to keep it short, then follows the same with a couple of taps and gestures in Handspeech. <Draconic/Handspeech>

<OOC> Cuemoni says, "Going in to follow Rune stealthily, will land at 33,33."
GAME: Cuemoni rolls Stealth: (13)+0: 13

The Shaman Cuemoni follows in behind Rune, hissing back softly to her in Draconic. "Then we keep going. Let us not disturb that creature." The druid is intent on keeping a quiet pace, not wanting to disturb the giant creature that Rune has so excellently spotted and warned of. <Draconic>

"I am Huian. Sword specialist." murmurs Huian very softly before she turns to follow the others. That first step is one she is not observing. So she steps on a treebranch which crunches .... LOUDLY...

With a wince, she creeps forward to end up next to Rune. She gives the Half-Sil a look and a shrug. Handspeech, "Sorry. Meant to be more quiet." she says to Rune.

As Huian steps on a branch, there's movement behind the trees. A shifting, slithering. And before the group knows it, two green eyes seem to be staring at them from behind the trees. Gazing at them, shifting its head almost in a serpentine manner...

Watching them...

The copper-scale Sith squirms, taking a few moments to pull the shield from his back. Spear in hand, he stalks forward into the jungle, moving parallel to the path leading deeper. "It is best to leave it...", he goes still as there's a crack nearby. Geir's eyes follow the beast movement. <Draconic>

GAME: Schara rolls perception: (20)+10: 30

Schara nods to the others, and finishes stowing the rope for the time being. a small brass cylinder is taken from a pouch, begore being jammed into a soft leather part of the armor on their chest. The metal glows with a soft white light before crumbling away completely.

The artificer moves up to get another angle on things, and stops near some of the trees. She turns back to the others, and holds up her normal hand with one finger. She points it north by north west, before pointing at herself, and making a counterclockwise motion.

<OOC> Aelwyn says, "I'll sneak into 32,32 and that about it. ._."
GAME: Aelwyn rolls stealth: (10)+3: 13
GAME: Aelwyn rolls perception: (16)+1: 17

Aelwyn slowly moves on after the others, keeping his head low. He doesn't speak a sound as others give their directions - Schara's expeditious disappearance takes most of his attention, but for now the draconian is more interested in being in the middle of the pack and keeping track of that large lizard.

<OOC> Harkashan says, "Also, roll me another Perception."
GAME: Rune rolls perception: (6)+16: 22

There is a moment when that large set of eyes peers over the trees at them that Rune makes a soft curse under her breath. However, the creature doesn't immediately seem to be threatening to them. "Let's keep going." She advises, then spots a flutter of movement through the trees and underbrush.

Schara. Squinting, Rune offers in that same hushed voice, "Looks like Schara spotted something. Going to head around that direction." And then, Rune is moving through the forest, sticking close to the shadows and eventually crouching near the base of a tree. From there, she has view both North and West.

Trying to communicate when most of the others are quite close to a very large creature, seems a poor decision, so for now, Rune doesn't attempt to pass along that she spotted a second Quickclaw. That will have to come later once the threat of danger ebbs.

<OOC> Cuemoni says, "Moni is going to Wild Empathy (druid feature) with the forest drake and let them know that herself and her allies mean the drake no harm and that they are here in the forest to capture a quickclaw."

GAME: Cuemoni rolls 1d20+2+1: (19)+2+1: 22
<OOC> Harkashan says, "You beat the DC 21."

Cuemoni's golden eyes regard the forest drake for a moment. But then she sweeps her arms out and bows before the creature in a deferential gesture to it.

"Cuahtla-cipactli, noble creature of the woods--we are travelers who mean you no harm and do not wish to fight. We are here for a quickclaw within these woods and not yourself. Peace be with you and with us, and the spirits may see to the accord of peace.." <Draconic>

Her words are reverent and practiced, someone who has entreated with the wilds before.

The Forest Drake stares at Cuemoni for a moment, considering her as she begins to speak to it in Draconic. Watching her with curious gaze. Taking note of the gesture, the practiced mannerisms...

Before it slowly bows its head, and turns away, stepping back from the tree lines. Partially following the motions of the group, but it looks like Cuemoni has removed any chance of it deciding they are a tasty snack for now.

<OOC> Geir says, "Move to 29,27, stealthed still."
GAME: Harkashan rolls 4: (6)+4: 10
GAME: Geir rolls perception: (14)+6: 20

The copper-scale squints at SChara, watching the wiggling of fingers and hands with curiosity. Rune's whispered voice, on the other hand, fills him in on what Schara's trying to convey.

Nodding to Rune, Geir begins to carefully move in Schara's general direction. He pauses a moment to glance around his surroundings, and looks over his shoulder at Cuemoni for a moment. A few more steps has him near enough to Schara to whisper, "Thisss one is ready to run, if needed."

<OOC> Aelwyn says, "I'll stealth myself into 28,29. ._."
GAME: Aelwyn rolls stealth: (17)+3: 20

Aelwyn's attention is largely taken by the large forest drake - there was that primal fear in him though, but he couldn't help but to be slightly in awe of the creature as well. The orange eyes curiously observe Cuemoni placate creature - up until Rune speaks and gestures for them to follow.

A faint rumble leaves the ruddy sith-makar's chest, and he moves along after the others, moving between Geir and Rune behind a tree. He and his autumn scales nearly blends in with the tree and its surroundings. Maybe he was of Am'shere after all!

The Velociraptor that Schara has spotted, and the team is slowly coming up on, has been quite busy sharpening its claw on the bark of a thick jungle tree. It has now started gnawing on it to strengthen its jaw as well. Near the edge of the jungle, the Hunter - Istetl follows to watch the team.

<OOC> Cuemoni says, "Double move to be right behind Rune at 25,26 because forest drake is not gonna eat us. Stealthing again."
GAME: Cuemoni rolls Stealth: (17)+0: 17

An appreciative bow of the head comes again for the forest drake, then Cuemoni moves quietly and quickly through the woods to rejoin Rune. "The large drake has been appeased and will not harm us," the Shaman says softly. There is a tiny hint of self-satisfaction in her voice, like she's pleased to have managed the feat, but is trying to maintain a neutral tone like it was simply expected of her.

For the time being, Rune continues to make her way up through the gap in the trees that lets her get around to the other side of the Quickclaw that Schara had spotted. At the moment, her main concern is to try to block off possible escape paths. That means trying to identify where all of them are!

However, that is not quite as easy as it seems. Trees and underbrush make it hard to see where there are gaps in the foliage that the creature might be able to move through.

Then, Cuemoni comes up behind her, giving that bit of intel on the more dangerous threat. "Good to know." She hisses back. <Draconic>

<OOC> Geir says, "Just move Geir to 28,26"
GAME: Geir casts Bless. Caster Level: 5 DC: 14

Geir slowly stalks forward, staying even with Schara for the time being. Up ahead the swiftclaw stands, head ducked down as it bites down on .. something small and squishy.

Schara shifts awkwardly behind the tree, and stops when some of the armor clanks together from an unintended movement. Realizing that they weren't going to get closer without alerting it, and seeing everyone else move into position, the artificer sprints around the treeline and behind the small lizard. But before she can get a grip on the beast, it bites down, hard, and the artificer has to cover the mouthpiece of their helmet with one hand to muffle a scream. Still, they're able to get one arm around the neck of the quick claw while it is bit down, holding it in place.

Aelwyn watches the rear as the others move up ahead, giving a quick glance around the surroundings. When Schara rushes forward though, the Dragoon is quick to sprint into action as well. Dashing past Geir, the other copper-scaled sith, he squeezes through the palm trees and slams his glaive down, ready to react in case the beast attempts to get away.

"Brass! Pin it down!" He hisses, as he holds up the blunt end of his glaive.

Schara gets on top of the little Quickclaw, grabbing at it, as it uses its newly-sharpened Talons in startled defense. Flailing its legs as she gets gripped down on. Biting down on her, then pushing its little clawed legs onto the underside of her arm and...

POP!

It pops out, head and all, wrenching itself free with far more ease than it should have any right having! It drops down, rushing between Aelwyn's legs, its claws stepping over his tail as he manages to side-swipe it with his spear. The creature goes tumbling, flailing, before rushing further south-east - failing to find an escape eastwards as it doesn't want to enter the town!

Only for it to run into the Bluescale, who crosses their arms and stares it down.

Followed by a sudden call that alerts him. To the Northeast. Aelwyn and Geir have trouble hearing it...

But to Rune, Schara, and Cuemoni it's unmistakable. To the northeast...

"Give it back! Give me back my Hatchling!" Along with a deep trumming set of powerful legs running towards the west.

It's practically a miracle, but Rune matches to clock it. It's a Swiftclaw... with a young silvren Sith-makar in its maw. Slowed down by the bulk, but... kidnapping it?!

<OOC> Rune says, "Uh, I'mma gonna leave the quickclaw to the others and full run to 27,6"

There is a moment when the Quickclaw escapes Schara's hold that Rune seems about to join the fray against it. But then her ear twitches.

The call seems to chill her blood. "Shit." Looking around frantically, she can just barely spot the source of the trouble. "We've got a Swiftclaw up North with a child!" She calls out for the others.

"Capture the creature, I'm going to try to head it off!" And... then Rune is racing through the one clear path in the trees, heading North to try to meet what she hopes is the path of the creature.

<OOC> Cuemoni can't cover the ground that Rune did. Let's go establish flank. Move to 32,25.

Cuemoni hisses at the news of a swiftclaw with a hatchling. There's a pain in her golden eyes. And yet... There is a task ahead of the group.

"This one will aid in capture," she says. "Go save the hatchling!" She doesn't stick around long to hear Rune's response, as she goes up to the quickclaw and establishes a strategic position to wrangle the beast from, crunching through the jungle foliage all the while.

<OOC> Geir says, "Can Geir run directly east to attempt tackling the quickclaw then?"
GAME: Geir rolls CMB: (5)+6: 11

The copper-scale Sith looks back and forth between the different directions people are moving, and lets out a huff of breath. "Thiss one will aid in capturing." Crashing through the undergrowth, Geir makes a beeline for the quickclaw. He pounces, only to find the lithe critter slipping between his fingertips. "Hah, this takess one back. Little crittersss are just as squirmy as ever."

His eyes flick to the turquoise-scaled Sith nearby. "Erm, it went that way." A hand gestures vaguely eastward as he regains his feet.

Schara was just about to return to attempting to capture their quarry, but their attention is pulled elsewhere with a new arrival. The artificer freezes up on the spot, before sighing. "Capture the quick claw if you can, even if it fails this trial, it is will still be an aid to the tribe if I understand this but I don't have time to do it at the moment. There is a beast with a child north-west of here."

The artificer continues rambling for some time, but already they are sprinting off in the direction of the swiftclaw, large vice grips springing out from underneath their right arm. They manage to clamp down on the swiftclaw as it passes by, tearing a chunk out of it's flesh.

"Please be alright, I don't know what to do but I'm doing my best and I don't know if it's good enough but I refuse to sit by if there's anything I can do." They continue rambling, already turning to chase after it again.

Yet it was too late. "Twin, to us!" He shouts as he runs forward, growling as he pushes his way through the trees towards the beasts.

All too quickly, there is a Swiftclaw coming at Rune through the trees. She braces herself, lashing out with a blade as it comes close, trying to slow it down by slicing at one of the back legs.

"This Swiftclaw, it ... it isn't normal!" She calls out.

Her eyes narrow. "You're a person, aren't you... " She raises her voice, "You're a fucking person, aren't you?!" That seems to spark some anger in the rogue, even as she pushes back one of the smaller lizards trying to attack her.

Despite the danger, Rune's concern is the child. She steps closer to the Swiftclaw. Her blades are quick, lashing one out towards the creature's face to distract it, only to follow up with another slash to the back end, trying to twist it into the soft muscle just above the knee. "Let. That. Hatchling. Go." She demands.

<OOC> Cuemoni says, "Yup. If Moni goes to 26,27, she's still got her rope. Any chance she can use it to lasso the quickclaw?"

Cuemoni strides forward, rope in her hands. As she goes through the jungle to chase the quickclaw, she grumbles. "This one does not like this tactic," she says. "But this one must do what is needed by the People."

The lasso-rope shoots forward and catches around the creature, the blessing of Geir helping her secure the rope around the quickclaw. "Stay!" she orders. Like that might help.

<OOC> Geir says, "Aid Cuemoni seems more sensible at this point."

After the swiftclaw uses him as a launch platform, Geir looks sourly at his armor and its fresh dents and scrapes. Turning once more to give chase, he gives out a cheerful cry as Cuemoni successfully ropes the little critter.

Arriving at her side a few moments later, the copper-scale laughs!

"Well done, Shaman Cuemoni! Now, once it has been securely tied, this one thinks you should run to assist the others. This one is slower, and does not share the same bonds with animalsss that you do. You will be more useful in the immediate future. This one shall move as quickly as possible behind you, with our mission securely bound. Did you wish my spear?" The weapon is offered to the druid. <Draconic>

<OOC> Schara says, "double move to 24,6"

Schara continues to give chase, and the artificer sprints after the swiftclaw. There are a few unpleasant popping and grinding noises from the armor as it's pushed to it's limit from the speed of the movement. She reaches in front of the beast again, brandishing their weapon and hoping to at least block the path again

There's this violent hiss from the Swiftclaw as Rune catches up for a moment. Chasing it past the Quickclaws and laying her daggers into its flanks. It throws her off, stepping further, turning about and hissing at her with a violent sound as she accuses it..

Schara gets in its way, stopping it from easily going to the west, and ducks off towards the south-west before suddenly turning and... crumpling up. Rolling onto the ground and releasing the hatchling onto the ground...

To Rune, no doubt time would feel like it's slowing. The black clothing. The markings across the man's face. The grimace and the insignia on the cloth he wears. Charn. Followed by the man lifting his hand to the sky for a moment. Words drawn from chapped dried up lips...

And a flare of light descends from above, burning the nearby tree. Collapsing it as flames spread and threaten to consume Rune and Schara!

Aelwyn sees the flash of flames - he doesn't really hear everything that is going on over the tress, but he shouts out even louder, "TWIN!" Seeing Schara run past, he holds out his hand to indicate he is going around the trees.

It's a person.

A moment of confusion is replaced with a wide toothed snarl, he lunges forward - the glaive tip slices into the man. The red ribbons of his glaive flare as he peels the blade out, singing with blood. "FALL FUCKER!" He snarls, already taking a step and swinging the heavy polearm around for another strike.

The sight of the Swiftclaw transforming causes Rune freeze, if only for a split second. It's a feeling that seems to settle in her chest, like ice going down her spine. She knew very well that coming here could mean coming face to face with the Charneth. Cold fear threatens to grip her, but her instincts kick in a moment later as flames are thrown in her direction.

Rolling out of the way, the tree behind her ends up charred, but Rune remains unscathed. Panic seizes her: fight or flight. A second raptor chomps at her, forcing her to kick it away, which leaves her gaze falling on the silver-scaled hatchling.

Fear and self-preservation war with that part of her that cannot, will-not let a child come to harm if she can help it.

Raising her head, Rune grits her teeth, fingers still trembling as she rolls forward beneath the claws of the raptors and comes up right in front of the Charneth magician. "Fuck you." And she neatly stabs him... right through the chest, leaving part of her blade still sticking out as the kidnapper falls.

Rune is pissed.

Having restrained the quickclaw, it's a short matter for Cuemoni to tie up the creature. "Ay, ay, little one," she murmurs softly, like she's talking to a hatchling. But she holds out the restraint to Geir.

"Take the little one," she says to Geir, her golden eyes narrowing as she looks up in the direction of the flames. "This one will go join the others. This one is acquainted with fire and knows the difference between the natural flame and the flame of those who seek to destroy the woods."

Once handed off, she darts through the jungle.

Geir gingerly takes hold of the rope, making sure to keep the spicy one from clawing at him, or Cuemoni. "Good luck, Shaman Cuemoni.", he yells, raising a hand, before slowly carrying the snarling little beast towards the eastern edge of the jungle.

"This one will entrussst the critter to your care. There is a matter of a hatchling being carried away by a swift claw. This one's companions should have it in hand." <Draconic>

Schara was not expecting the swiftclaw to turn into a person, and before the artificer can react, they're summoning down flames from the sky. The artificer ducks behind a nearby tree, but it's not quite enough.

There is a rather unsettling scream that pierces the jungle, warped by devices in the helmet that turn it to a strange low tone as they barely escape being baked alive in their own armor.

The right side of the artificer gets the worst of it, when she looks out to see Rune and Aelwyn finishing off the beast, the artificer's left arm is fused at an unatural angle, unmoving. Still, she hurries out from cover, earning another nasty bite from one of the quick claws while scooping up the child. She does her best to shield them, while the swiftclaw continues it's assault, slashing and biting at the armor, looking for a point of weakness it is unable to find.

Seeing the body of the mage fall and the kid scooped up, Aelwyn quickly rushes by the other's side. "How bad is it?" He asks with a steady voice and a glance toward Schara; orange eyes turning towards Rune. "We are here." He rumbles, firmly. Yet it was all but a moment in the heat of the scuffle, as he swings the fat end of his glaive at the raptor further out. The end cracks a jaw, before the Dragoon takes a step back, swaying on his spot. "It is time retreat, Twin Brass." He rumbles, as he holds up his glaive.

The Blue-scaled Sith-makar, Istetl, looks at Geir as he approaches, taking the now well-bound Quickclaw from him. "It'll be a long time before you grow into Hunters." He rumbles, before looking northwards.

"Go." He then tells him. "Take care of the Hatchling. They are far more important to us than a Quickclaw." He tries to impress upon Geir with a stern voice. A tone that no doubt would not go unnoticed to Cuemoni either - this close.

What Cuemoni might also hear, is the rushing steps of a Quickclaw. Having just gotten wounded by Aelwyn's spear, it seems startled by her being in the way, and tries to trample over her, its talons coming to bear upon her.

There is a disgusting sound as Rune pulls her blade free from the fallen Charneth druid, but she barely pays the fallen caster much mind. Instead, it is the child that is more her concern.

Thankfully, Schara scoops them up quickly. However, there is no moment of relief as the quickclaws seem to take it as an opportunity for an easy lunch. Shifting her position to make herself more of a threat to the creature, Rune slashes with both weapons, "This isn't the easy meal you think it is, beast."

Oh, she has no ability to talk to animals, but making sounds as well as being a source of pain is bound to have some effect. "Protect Schara and the hatchling at all costs." She answers, nodding to the others.

Cuemoni hisses as the dinosaur tries to scratch at her. She takes a glancing step back out of her opponent's range, then she snarls, "Fire walk with this one," Cuemoni intones, and flames leave her, scorching her opponent brutally.

Geir regards Istetl for a moment, nodding briskly before charging off into the undergrowth.

The heavy footfalls and the sound of armor jingling and clanking announcing his impending arrival. To Cuemoni's left a bush cracks in half as the copper-scale Sith slams through it, his spear level with the quickclaw.

With a *CRUNCH*, the creature is pierced through, and pinned to the ground.

Panting, Geir regards Cuemoni. "This one trusts you are well?" <Draconic>

Schara looks up from where they were as the swiftclaw distracted for a moment, but an attempt to respond is cut short by a violent fit of coughing. Instead they just nod to Aelwyn and rune, before shoving the swiftclaw away long enough to make an opening to sprint away in the direction of where their guide and the others were.

Aelwyn would in general be very impressed by Rune's play with swords that manages to scare off the last of the raptors harassing them; but right now, his attention was more in making sure his party was okay. "Brass, Twin, hurt?" He asks again - but Schara is off to a run.

Looking after the disappearing suit of armor, he slides his hand into his satchel. "Does she need a kick?" He asks again, this time offering a vial to her.

As soon as the last of the Quickclaws retreats, Rune looks down at the fallen form of the Charneth druid. Her eyes narrow. For all her fear of them, they are not as scary in a crumpled, bloodless form on the ground.

So, Rune crouches and starts going through the druid's things, looking for anything that might be able to be researched or delivered back to the Makari. What she finds, however, is a black box iwth a lock.

Turning it in her hands, she raises her head to Aelwyn, "This has some sort of magical trap on it. I might be able to disable it." Raising her voice, she calls out, "Got a trapped box. If you've got any magic that can help me, now's the time. Otherwise, get a safe distance incase this goes bad."

Cuemoni makes her way up to where Rune and Aelwyn are, the golden-eyed Shaman looking between them. "This one can provide a small amount of healing to one person," she says. "If needed."

Her eyes go down to the box in Rune's hands. "Ay. This one has no magic for opening locks. This one apologizes."

"This one doess not have anything specific for... explosive boxess. But, one can lend aid and healing, should you be injured.", the copper-scale calls out in answer to Rune. Geir spends a few moments removing his spear, before following in Cuemoni's wake.

"Isss anyone injured? Thiss one will assist in mending wounds, as well, rends in one's armor."

The vial is pushed back within the Dragoon's satchel and he clicks his teeth irately at Rune. "Boxes can be carried and broken at any time -" The draconian rumbles, with a flick of his tail. "Twin does not have to do it by herself and now." H was not happy about leaving her with some magical bomb.

Aelwyn's orange eyes seem to glare at her, before he turns to look towards the direction of the others. "We can set up a perimeter to make certain no more creatures interfere." Then his agze returns to the half-elf. "Brass probably would know something about these boxes."

Golden eyes on the sith-makar Shaman find a tree that was dropped in the melee. "Ay," comes the noise of complaint from the shaman, and Cuemoni gets to work, uncorking her waterskin and using it to douse the flames.

When it's out, she gives a little tail-thump onto the ground.

"Peace be to the earth.
Peace be to the spirits.
Renew the wood and the land.
May the cycle of All turn." <Draconic>

Another tail-thump, and it appears Cuemoni's devotional words to nature have finished.

Aelwyn does have a point, but there is a certain wariness from Rune about carrying an object like this anywhere close to civilization. "I know that it doesn't have to be here and now, but I'm not taking this back to the village without being sure that it's safe to be around."

"If there's no spells to help with tasks like this, focus what magic you've got on healing Schara." She advises, clearly not as worried about herself in that regard.

Then, to the fire-dancer, she gives a rueful look, "I need to take care of this. Trust me." With that, Rune steps away from the others, puting a good distance between them and herself. She takes quite a bit of time, being quite careful, but after a few tense minutes, she calls out, "We're good!"

Letting out a sigh, Rune shakes her hands out, slowly approaching with the opened box in hand. Inside, there appears to be a glass vial, a hammer in which to strike it, and a letter written in some unusual tongue.

The artificer returns back with the rest of the group, only stopping for a moment to switch off something in their armor, which triggers a violent grinding noise in their right arm as melted and damaged plates attempt to move in ways now made impossible. Schara tears off the mouthpiece of her helmet by hooking it onto another plate near their shoulder, and biting down on a switch hidden underneath to silence the grinding noises, leaving the limb even more mangled than before. Followed shortly after by the artificer doubling over and finding a spot nearby to lose the contents of their stomach.

"I'm sorry, I may not be being the most convincing that things are okay, but things will be okay." The artificer states once they can regain their breath to the hatchling they were carrying. They look up and over to Rune as she returns. <Draconic>

"That vial is trapped with magic. Be careful not to break it." They warn quietly. "A spell to spread diseases, in this case, one that will cause severe lesions on the afflicted, worsening into severe damage to nerves all throughout the body."

The Hatchling seems to be pretty quiet. Shaking a bit as they watch Schara empty their stomach with confused eyes. It then looks at the Sith-makar nearby - Cuemoni and Aelwyn and Geir - then looks back at Schara. It's clear the little one is stressed. And as stressed Sith-makar do...

It bites onto Schara's mangled arm and just kind of clamps on. It's not a 'bite bite' per-se. But it just kind of latches on.

The Deathsinger has already begun to follow Rune's advice, having moved to Schara's side to put a hand on her back, his voice lowly intoning a solemn prayer to Vardama.

The holy symbol, mostly hidden behind his armor, save for the chain, glows brightly as he prays. A cool wave of light washes out from Geir, touching those near him, soothing their pain, and starting the healing process to knit their wounds closed.

"Oh... little one.", the Sith says with an amused tone in their voice. "Come with this one. We sshall return you to your nestlihgs." The copper-scale offers his hand to the hatchling, his other hand attempting to gently pull the tiny Sith. <Draconic>

Aelwyn hisses and grits his teeth, but he -forcefully- bows his head. "Naturally, Twin." He replies to the rogue with a very pushed, detached voice. "This one trusts her. Yet one does not have to like it." His orange and red scaled sith-makar's eyes watch the fires being put out.

The Dragoon then turns towards Geir and the rest, watching them gather. "Did we succeed in capturing the Claw?" He asks from him, returning to their original task at hand.

Schara's evacuation makes the draconian wince though, and he carefully moves to help the artificer. Somehow. Maybe.

Rune's return makes him bow his head, and then he slowly exposes his sharp teeth at her. "Good, Twin." Then to the others, "Are we ready to return?"

The fact of what was inside the trap is enough for Rune to feel justified in her caution. "Yeah, definitely don't want that brought into the village." Looking to their Guide, she asks, "Is there somewhere I can dispose of this vial safely without it becoming a problem for the people or the wildlife?"

The bit of letter, however, Rune tucks away to have it examined later.

Then, seeing the troubles that Schara and Geir are having with the little one, Rune steps forward, "You don't know, do you?" She reaches out, then boops the silver-scaled hatchling on the nose. "Time to let go, little one."

Geir had begun digging through his pack, searching for something specific. "This one hass just the trick, one moment." More rummaging around is had, before the copper-scale retrieves a small leather wrapped package. From this, a few pieces of dried jerky are pulled.

"Thiss should have the little one distracted for a moment."

On seeing the snoot booping and its success, Geir laughs, the jerky being put away. "This one is certain the brood mothers would be happy to have you."

There is something that flickers within those golden eyes of Cuemoni's at the guide's words. Her gaze draws down to the hatchling that Schara has as Rune encourages the little one to release itself from Schara's form. The Shaman's nostrils flare, just a little, and she looks away.

"This one... has a complicated relationship with hatchlings," she says. "But this one will take these words. They are sensible words. They are what is important for the People."

It's a moment more, before the fire Shaman remarks, "This one will reflect." And her golden gaze turns to the trees of the jungle, where the spirits she is familiar with are, and where whatever is dogging her very well could be, if it's a physical thing to begin with.

The healing takes effect, and Schara shudders as the various wounds and injuries heal up at a rapid pace. The artificer straightens up, better able to focus on everything going on. "At least they will be incapable of doing so again, and perhaps it will serve as a warning to them enroaching on these lands, but that may be wishful thinking." They muse quietly. "I could not let them get away if I could stop them, and thankfully, Rune and Aelwyn could."

She looks down to her arm where the hatchling was clamped on, and sighs. "It's alright, though I don't want them hurting themselves on my arm. It isn't made for being bitten through." They note, before they are freed by Rune. The artificer scoops them back up with her remaining arm, and nods. "I'll have to remember that even if I hope it is not necessary in the future. But, we should get going. I'm in no state to defend myself, and we need to get this one to safety."

Aelwyn looks towards Schara, hand sliding down his hip. "Tch, perhaps one is trying to reward Brass. Shame, one found their match." He flashes his teeth. Turning to look towards the vial, he tilts his head. "This one supposes it could be taken beyond the portal if needed."

At the Guide's words though - Aelwyn does look quite surprised. Or confused, perhaps, and he slowly stretches his jaw out, clicking his teeth together. Yet he bows, and lets his eyes move after Cuemoni. "Tch. In some trials of life one can simply not win." He rumbles and he nods his head towards Schara. "Let us."
