  • Summary: The Adventurers have spotted and must fight for their lives.


The group had followed the sage advice of their contacts in the village and dismounted the boat nearby, picking their way past a series of bear traps presumably laid out by the Kobolds. Crik has elected to pretend to be a fisherman and approach the quarry along the river's bank, while the rest of the group attempted to sneak behind. Thoth made it right up to the window of one of the kobold-occupied cabins before one of the Kobolds inside happened to turn and see him peeking through the shutters. The short, green-scaled figure is scrambling for his bow which is propped up against a nearby wall.

Reithak glances up the slope, and their eyes narrow slightly. "Ah, gods damn it all, guess they know we're here now." The large egalrin curses. "Alright! You guys know the drill, a little inspiration'll just reinforce what'cha know. Take care and Ceinara'll take care of you!" They pray quietly, filling the group with some manner of divine protection as she creeps up the slope. <Auran>

Crik hears the familiar words behind him and he turns - then his beak looks down at himself. He looked exac- another head turns back. Slowly raising the basketful of fish in front of him, he slowly lowers it in front of him. Moves a little further towards the northern path. Lowers the basket down, stays still. Then repeats the motion.

Surely nobody will suspect a basket filled with fish randomly moving around the snowy scene.

Thoth, at fault for the group having been spotted, quickly ducks its head down and tells the Kobolds; "Thou hath seen nothing. It art all in thine imagination." <Draconic> Before quickly rattling out a few words of magic. Touching its Ankh as it focuses on improving the arcane shield that protects it, bolstering it further.

Khepri stiffens as it appears the kobolds have been alerted to their presence. Well... there is a time to move quietly, and a time to act. The golem makes a gesture, and speaks, "Harpist, protect me with Thy beneficience." It then holds its heavy khopesh up over its head. "In Her name, I shall purge the wicked and unclean, burn away their sins with the fires of Her judgement!" A glowing rune appears on the pommel of the khopesh, and then red and gold flames burst from the blade.

"Alright, let's move people! Sooner we get in and out of here, the better. Rather not make a mess of this unless we have to." Reithak calls over, drawing their rapier and breaking out into a run to the main passage. They pause, and looking out into the area. "These two close buildings have kobolds in them, which probably rules them out for where we're looking for. That and-" She calls out to no one in particular, only to be stop suddenly and change dialects. <Auran>

"STAY OUT OF THE MAIN PASSAGE IN THE MIDDLE! THEY'RE GONNA LOOSE A CART DOWN IT!" She shouts, realizing the rather unfortunate position of their own for such a warning.

Crik glances behind him as Reithak appears - and then he sees it too. The cart. Waving a pair of fish rapidly in warning, the corvid then starts to scamper up along the cliff's side. Hooks appear out of nowhere, as he quickly ascends the rough terrain. Barely having time to take a breath, he sees the staredown between Kobold and Birb happening within the cabin. His natural response - to throw rocks at the window, distracting the Kobold.

       As Reithak comes into view, the hollow echoey sound of a shrill voice inside a metal helmet calls out in Draconic, "Longshanks! Get 'em boys! Remember, capture if you can!" The hatchet in hand is swung, and slices cleanly through the taut hemp rope straining against the weight of the cart laden with granite blocks. It trundles down the slope towards Reithak and the river beyond, rapidly picking up speed as it does and bouncing on creaking wooden axels. Reithak deftly leaps out of the way of the runaway cart which slams into one of the supports of the crane, splintering it, and then twists and topples sideways, demolishing the dock and the boat left there as debris splashes into the icy river.

Following in the wake of powdery snow kicked up by the cart, the apparent leader of this troupe spurs his mount on by squeezing one of the slimy warts on the giant toad-like creature's back. It hops with surprising alacrity after the cart and its rider grips the handle of a lance held in a saddle brace, pointing its tip to Reithak. "Longshanks help or longshanks die!" he calls out to the Inquisitor. Crik in his vantage above seems to have gone unnoticed in the commotion, for now.

As though to add emphasis to the words of their ironclad leader, one of the Kobolds right at the back of the quarry- on an elevated platform that looks to have been used to reach higher portions of the artificial cliff face- looses his shortbow. The arrow lands some fifteen feet short, burying itself in the snow and gravel with a crunch.

The blue-scaled Kobold next to him, wearing ragged robs festooned with bits of bone and feather and beads pulls a scroll from their belt and unravels it. Barking a short incantation in Draconic, she promptly vanishes from sight.

The War Golem bird has a rather limited view of everything going on. It can hear its allies shouts, and the heavy wheeling of the cart rolling down the hill. But its focus is admittedly more on the kobold that had its crossbow trained on it.

It ducks away and plucks one of its feathers off of its broken wings, sharpening it with its talons, and then flicks it into the air - whence it begins to dance and twirl.

The moment a Kobold rounds the corner and tries to throw some Bolos at it, it ducks for the ground and prepares to retaliate!

More arrows come sailing from the far reaches of the quarry, neither finding their mark. The wooden shutters of the western cabin slam open, though, and another arrow is loosed from their- and this one catches Reithak solidly, the tip piercing and drawing blood.

Meanwhile, another Kobold emerges from the northern cabin- and almost skids to a stop when he spots Thoth skulking along the side of one of the others. He whirls a pair of heavy stones linked by rope above his head and then looses them Thoths way, but they catch on the handles of a wheelbarrow between them, becoming tangled up there.

More draconic invocations signal a shimmer of force appearing around one of the other blue-scaled shamans at the rear of the quarry, up on one of those elevated platforms.

The war golem Executor bursts out of the treeline, striding up the slope, its fiery khopesh swinging back and forth. "And lo, do all mortals come to the courts of the Harpist to be judged. For She sees all your deeds, all your virtues and sins, and woe betide those who seek to evade Her vision. For there is no escape from Her verdicts."

With their enemy coming from a completely different direction from what they anticipated, the pair of Kobolds in the cabin scramble across and over the table in the middle of it- knocking dirty cutlery and gnawed bones and nearly empty wine bottles scattering to the ground. Each looses an arrow- the one who spotted and then lost track of Thoth going for the new, more obvious target unaware that Thoth is crouching nearby ready to strike with a dagger. The awkward angle catches the dagger on the frame of the window, though.

Meanwhile their companion moves to the other window and leans out- a little craftier, he tries to shoot Thoth in the back while the War Golem lashes out at his ally. The awkward angle foils this one, though, and the arrow sails past Thoth to splash into the river.

Reithak, exposed and isolated, has another arrow loosed their way- and another arrow fails to find its mark, striking the stone wall and bouncing away to clatter into the snow underfoot.

Reithak is forced to dive out of the way of the runaway cart, left still extremely exposed in what was quickly turning out to be a firing line from both sides of the pathway. There's a pained squawk from the inquisitor as one of the arrows finds it's mark.

The inquisitor holds their weapon at a neutral, but still defensive posture as they address the one who loosed the trap. "Fight or die? That isn't right, I don't want to fight to begin with, Longshanks. If they kill you for refusing to harm others, that's not fair, is it?" They offer placatingly. "But you don't have to do that. Leave now, find others who won't force you to do things like this under threat of death. They'll probably keep shooting at me, so now's your chance if you're that worried."

But if you fight us, then I will have no choice but to attack, and that likely won't end well for you." They answer. "Stand down, leave, and there is no reason for either of us to die. It's your choice."

Crik presses flat against the cabin, hearing the kobolds shift inside. The booming voices of his companions, especially Khepri's, keeps him somewhat appraised where everyone was, but Reithak's attempt at parlay makes him pause. If the other egalrin only could see the hands waving some kind of masterful plan in a hand dialect only Crik knows.

No time wasted though, Crik carefully slides inside the cabin, sneaks under a convenient table and holds his hands out, in case the Kobold in front of him does something threatening.

"Can't help? Won't help. Longshanks always same." The armor-clad kobold says, throwing his head back. "Is ok. We make them help." he insists then in sillibant tradespeak. He manipulates one of the warty growths on his mounts back, and the mount rears forwards, one of the lumbs bursting forth with a spray of greasy slime towards Reithak. "We take you to our cave and you can fight the fake dragon!" he insists.

The slime coats the exposed negotiator and quickly begins to congeal in the cold air, its texture becoming first like cold honey and then like set pitch, matting feathers and pinning limbs to body and feet to snowy ground.

Seeing their leader speaking with the only tall folk they can lay eyes on, the archers at the rear stay their bows for the time being. Meanwhile another shimmer of light signifies a second suit of magical armor materializing around the other Shaman.

As Thoth stabs at the Kobold trying to fire on one of its allies - another shoots at it. Thoth quickly ducks away, using the awkward angle to make the arrow miss. But in turn, its dagger scrapes the frame of the window in a similar way.

Thoth is, by no means, a martial combatant. Its focus are its spells. And it proves this as it starts running to the east while quickly casting a magic missile. Sending multiple small white 'stars' from its fingers at the kobold peeking out of the window - slamming into its head and making a mess of it.

At a raised hand from the mounted Kobold, the archers, bows trained on Reithak, hold their fire. Arrows knocked but sting not yet pulled back as they wait for a signal from their leader, or else a false move from the entangled elgarin.

Scaled feet crunch through snow as those in the back cautiously reposition themselves, likewise not making any agressive moves but readying themselves to strike should the time come.

Khepri barely breaks stride as its head turns to stare at the kobold in the window. The metallic voice rings out, "Drop it!" and the magical compulsion causes the kobold to throw its weapon down. Never slowing, Khepri moves up next to Thoth, staring at where the other kobold is coming from while drawing a dagger. "I wouldn't, if I were you," the golem intones ominously.

As instructed, the Kobold drops his bow on the ground and then blinks in confusion, checks his hands for grease left over from dinner, and then stoops low to try and pick his bow back up. For whatever reason, his scaly fingers just cannot find purchase on the weapon, and it keeps slipping out of his grasp. He remains blussfully unaware of the Corvid creeping up under the table behind him.

Reithak was expecting the kobold to either listen, or attack. What they were not expecting, was whatever this was that happened. The inquisitor sputters for a moment, before grabbing one leg with her free hand, and yanking it free of the ground, and letting her step forward and pull the other once she can properly brace it, earning another arrow for their trouble. "Said I wouldn't help? No, I didn't, just assumed that like you probably assumed you couldn't talk to the folks at the quarry. But I'm not going to be forced to help, and these two arrows sticking outta me say I really have no good reason to trust you." The egalrin grumbles, punctuated by more than a few sharp grunts of pain.

Crik surely had a plan. Lying under the table, he was going to wait for an - clatter. Rustling above, confused sounds. A bow falls in front of him, with hands dancing above it in confusion. Crik stares, black eyes wide.

Crik surely had a plan. Lying under the table, his dark fingers calmly reach out and carefully slide the bow to himself - and quiet as a whisper, scrambles with alarming speed under the table towards the cabin's exit. A kobold bow in hand.

The Mounted Kobold shakes his tin-can head and then spurs his mount onwards as Reithak breaks their bonds, lance braced it plunges into the Elgarin's shoulder. His mount slams into Reithak a moment later, checking them bodily and launching them backwards to slam into the pile of rubble that was a crane before the runaway cart collapsed it. A fresh coat of sticky slime glues them in place and the rider points the tip of his lance Reithak's way once more. "Maybe you no help. Maybe your friends help, else maybe I kill you. Tell them to come out. Nicely. Maybe I don't feed you to Grobbit."

The Kobolds at the back, who clearly had been expecting a frontal assault, slowly begin to creep their way forwards- bows at the ready, still, but drawing nearer to where the fighting seems to actually be happening. The air shimmers as one o the shamans re-appears.

"Why doth thou speaketh to the Kobold?" Thoth inquires with Khepri. It understood the command of Drop It of course, and felt the magic beneath that. It's referring to telling the Kobold not to draw that dagger. "It will not alter its behavior. It is just a monster."

It peeks around the corner and is quick to flick a spell at it, spreading its fingers towards the kobolds and speaking of arcane chirps, before a ray of red splashes forth, touching the center of the Kobold, and engulfing it rapidly in flame - turning it to ashes.

"I shall catch up." It remarks to Khepri.

The Kobolds continue their advance, bows trained on Reithak incase they once again escape the sticky slime. The smoke rising from behind one of the other buildings does draw some momentary attention, and two of the Kobolds- one of the shamans and one of the archers, turn their attention that way and begin meandering amongst the rocky debris of the quarry in that direction.

With the immediate threats neutralized, Khepri sprints along the uneven, icy ground towards the corner of the building. It's not a stealthy approach. Indeed, as the golem strides forth, the fiery khopesh is leveled at the other kobolds. "Flee now, lest my Mistress claim you, and bear you to Her halls, where all mortals arrive in time."

The Kobold in the cabin scrambles about for his bow, looking up and down and lifting a pot that is definitely too small for it to be underneath before hissing in confused frustration. He draws a dagger from his belt and climbs out the window, takes two steps towards Thoth and sees the smoking stumps of one of his companions feet and lower legs still standing in the snow. He freezes in place, as though Thoths vision might be motion-based and if he does not move he will remain unseen.

Reithak was braced for another attack, which did very little, as the inquisitor finds theirself speared badly by the lance, and flung bodily away from the charging beast, almost pasted to the ground from the prior slime refreshed with a fresh coat. Trying to stand up for a brief moment and failing, the egalrin stays on the ground for the time being. "Alright, you've made yourself clear enough. Hey guys? Shit ain't great over here, s'my fault for getting caught out. Come out if you can, since I probably have to help them whether I want to or not." They call out.

Crik looks around in alarm, hearing Reithak's voice. He then turns towards Khepri who appeared. With a blank look, he offers the bow to him, before rapidly signaling with his fingers and quiet whispers. "Outmatched. Let them take her here. Ambush."

A pause, he tilts his head. "... do you have bombs?"

Turning around though, the corvid egalrin then starts moving rapidly forward, sneaking around one of the other cabins - then his beak opens as he stares at the building opposite of him. More aggressive waving of hands nobody understands.

Spying a new threat, the pair that broke off heads towards Khepri in the war golem's attempt to circle around their leader. And arrow is loosed once one of the pair is near enough, and it strikes Khepri's chestplate, glancing off without causing any real damage.

Thoth watches as one of the Kobolds gets out from cover and switches from its bow to a dagger. On the scale of most War Golems, it's almost the same size as the Kobold - just a bit taller. "This one would like thee to know, abandoning thine cover was a tactical mistake." It remarks... far too calmly.

And as it freezes in place, Thoth considers it for a moment. Did someone cast Hold Monster? No, it's still moving a little.

"Standing still is inadvisable." It adds, as it redirects the flaming beam straight towards it, carving a bit across the snowy ground, melting some of it - before it slashes up along the Kobold's body like a long blade and scorches it in twain while it starts moving and hippity-hopping through the snow.

As Khepri and Thoth continue drawing attention, the focus of the Kobolds is finally beginning to split and be drawn away from the beleaguered Reithak- one of the archers who had their bow trained on the inquisitor breaks off, circling around to see what all the noise is. Meanwhile the one that had been standing alongside the rider steps out to get a view of Thoth, and looses an arrow his way- an arrow which bounces harmlessly from an invisible shield of force hovering around the other War Golem.

Khepri advances on the kobolds, intent on presenting a terrifying visage to the assembled tribe. "Flee now!" the golem thunders. As a ray of frost caresses its left leg, the Executor never stops its advance, and the fiery khopesh whirls, leaving a shimmering red and gold arc in its wake. There's a flash of light and heat, and then the kobold magician is -impaled- on the curving blade, hoisted up, as Khepri roars, "Only death awaits you here!" There's a muted -whump- and the spitted kobold explodes into flames before coming off the sword in two halves, falling at Khepri's feet.
