Folson's Folly, afternoon

In the wake of Castileth's furious departure, the heroes spend their time getting the brigands on their feet, scolding them, and collecting supplies so the band of broken thieves can make their way out of the foothills and towards civilization. They are a sorry sight, and Corey's impromptu sermon on the virtues of law and justice reduces them to tears. As the column shuffles away, the party now has a new direction to go. The road leads towards Skald -- maybe they can catch up with this 'weedy looking fellow' and Daniela Konigsdottir.

The Goblin looks concerned, watching the kytons' victims shamble off to the closest piece of civilization. She offers Dirk a modicum of assistance, being a sounding board for his thoughts and ideas as to where the 'weedy lookin' fellah' might be headed, and how many might be traveling with him.

Murder remains quiet for much of the time they are on the move, helping with setting camp, fetching firewood, and managing to catch a couple of rabbits for dinner.

Finding the trail causes her to be more active and animated. "If we're really lucky, the lady we're trying to rescue will be with them, and we can free her and be on our way."

Eventually, the bandits are sent on their way. Dirk only added a -little- bit of stern finger-wagging to Corey's sermon. The poor lads have had a rough go of it, and the old snowbeard is anything but heartless. Once they former highwaymen have departed, he turns to his comrades. "Right. We've got us a trail tae catch. Let's to it!"

And to it he does. He leads them over hill and dale, his keen gaze riveted on the ground. Now and again, he'll slow his step to examine a bit of crushed leaf or broken twig. Like a bloodhound on the scent, he follows the faint traces as they wind through the mountains, leading away from Alexandros and towards Skald. For two days, he leads them, stopping only once it's well past sunset to pitch a hurried camp. Ordinarily, camping out would mean hearty singing and plenty of mead from the pony keg to share, but not these nights--Dirk is focused on his mission.

Finally, just past dawn of the second day, he's carefully scanning the trail. His whiskers bristle around the stem of his pipe as he quietly chomps the bit, while his fingertips sweep over the ground. Suddenly, he goes stock-still. His head snaps up. "I've -got- 'em!" he growls softly. "That way! They went -that- way, I'd stake my beard on it!"

Two days on the trail have Corey cheerfully following Dirk and making sure that everything's okay. He rather enjoys the act of camping, making sure that his tent with Karasu is cozy and warm in the quickly-chilling nights. Winter is coming, but Corey is prepared.

"That way?" Corey murmurs as his head snaps in the indicated direction, silver eyes bright and wide. "Well, we're going to follow!" As though there's any alternative. There isn't, as far as Corey's concerned. He draws his rapier and advances carefully. Stealth isn't really a possibility for him, but he can at least eat the first arrow or trap... Not that Karasu ever likes him doing so.

Karasu has little to say to the bandits - his way of life had once been worse than theirs (this he is nearly certain of) - so he has no judgement of them. He only keeps a stern eye on them to ensure that they listen to Cor'ethil and that they take the paladin's lessons truly to heart. He doesn't intend to have his heart merely listened to out of half an ear after all. Perhaps they will come out of it with better lives - or not. That part doesn't concern him. That they listen, that part does.

Once they are on the road he says even less, preferring to keep to Cor'ethil's side and ensuring that the other man is in good keeping. It is notable to the others that every meal - every meal they share - Cor'ethil's meals are tasted by Karasu first. Everything they eat is tasted by Karasu before it enters Corey's mouth be it a cup of water or a tasty morsel.

As they draw even closer to their prey, Karasu draws his own weaponry, smiling a small smile and nodding to his paladin counterpart. Follow they will indeed.

Murder snorts. "You'd stake your beard on it? You should honestly wager a few coppers. At least you won't miss a few coppers, if you're wrong, hmm?" She also draws her blade, and will trail along in Corey and Karasu's wake. She will avail herself of Corey's arrow-absorbing services.

Dirk's skill in tracking, and his experience at moving overland, help to keep a fast pace. The group moves swiftly, following those tracks -- a heavy carriage, and four outriders judging from the traces left by wheel and hoof.

As the sun is beginning to descend on the third day after giving chase, the quartet ascends a hill. Down below in a gentle bowl sits a large, fairly expensive-looking carriage, though it bears no coat of arms. Four armored knights stand at attention by their mounts, and a thin fellow is working at a simple fire, cooking something.

Dirk grins around his pipe as he tips Murder a sly wink. "Lucky fer me I'm nae wrong, innit?" he growls with a chortle. He turns back to the trail and follows it, leading the way. Eventually, they arrive at that... admittedly strange setup. Dirk crouches low to the ground (not as he needs to crouch very far), squinting down the hillside into the little sheltered dell. "Wait a tick," he mutters softly. "Lookit those lads. They're knights, aren't they? Got the heraldry n' everything." He looks over at Corey. "So why're they just -standin'- there? Shouldn't they be seein' to their horses?" He looks back down, reaching up to take the pipe from his mouth. He tucks it into his hip satchel with a worried frown. "Ye all want I should slip down there an' get a closer look? Maybe one o' the horses could tell me summat..." Because of -course- he can talk to horses. He's a ranger, look it up.

Corey stares at the scene ahead of them. His silver eyes squint at several aspects of the scene, and his nose wrinkles in complete and utter disdain, like he's seen something that deeply unnerves him. "It... doesn't look _real_," he murmurs. "You're right, Dirk. It is so very odd. Maybe there's magic involved here? But we'd need to get closer to find out."

He eyes Karasu. "Nightingale, you could scope it out with Dirk? As much as I don't like the idea of being left behind..." Yes, those are puppy-dog eyes on Cor'ethil. He would not be able to stand it if Karasu got badly hurt again.

Karasu looks at Corey and nods. "Me and Dirk will stealth in. If either of us get caught out, you and Murder will clamor in as the calvary. I think it is a trap though. I have got one of those bad feelings." He shudders and pets Wuya. "Which is why I am leaving Wuya with you." He passes the bird off to Corey. Then he looks at Dirk and starts to eek toward the area where the horses are. He'll try and get close enough to start something with the man in the middle…

The Goblin holds up a hand. "Hold on... this is very definitely a trap. Why don't I go down and trigger it, and the three of you come in as an ambush?"

Dirk nods his head slowly. "Here. Lemme send Lulu wi' ye," he says. He looks at the petite little owl perched on his shoulder. For her part, the owl has her wide golden gaze staring fixedly on the camp. "Right Lulu. Wing ondown there. Do a flyby swoop on one o' the horses--see if ye can ruffle 'is mane. An' then wing yeself up intae a tree an' stay out o' trouble. Right?" Lulu fluffs up her feathers and gives her very fiercest "Hoo-oo!" With a near silent whoosh of her wings, she lofts up off Dirk's shoulder and makes ready to do her master's bidding.

"I think sending in one person by their own self is worse than two people, or... one person and one bird," Corey comments to Murder in another murmur. He accepts Wuya onto his shoulder--putting a kiss onto the raven's head in the process (it's very, _very_ important)--and then looking at Karasu. "Please be safe?" he urges quietly. Even with Lulu as backup, he worries.

Karasu looks at Murder, his dark eyes set. "No Cor'ethil, if she is set on it, let her do it. Let her and the owl go." He makes a motion of 'welcome' to Murder. "Please. Do not let me stand in your way."

Yet when she goes - if she goes, he goes in her footsteps silent as a one-time killer might be. Ambush is after all his specialty. And the best assassinations come when one is confronted with a show, and from the shadows comes something unexpected.

Murder shrugs her shoulders at Corey. "I'm hard to kill.", she says quietly. "And you're not enamored with me, so it's not like you'll be all that upset if something attacks me."

She blinks at Karasu then as he acquiesces, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. But she shrugs and grins toothily, her hands starting to trace out arcane symbols, and briefly, her form is obscured before becoming visible again.

Lulu goes first, the owl winging softly past the ad-hoc campsite. The weedy, slender form at the fire actually flinches a little bit as her soft hoot comes out of the night air. Two of the knights turn to watch Lulu, along with their mounts... heads moving in unison, but making no action as the owl lofts into the trees.

Then Murder tries to approach. It... doesn't go as planned. She steps on a branch, and the snap is practically thunderous. Then she jumps back, and bumps against Karasu, and the motion causes -all- the knights, and their mounts, and even the robed form at the fire to look over.

The robed figure stands up, clears its throat softly, and then intones, "Who approaches this place?"

Whoosh. Cor'ethil blinks as he finds himself in the spot where Murder was before. He gives a quick eye to Karasu before he shouts, "PRAISE GILEAD," because those are the two words on his head as he advances, focusing his Gilead-granted powers on the chessboard that is before him. "Definitely evil!" Corey shouts. "Those knights are _evil_ as they come!"

Her blade is pulled free, and as she goes to run in... suddenly she's at the back. And Corey is standing in her previous place. The Goblin frowns, and sighs. Arcane symbols are once more drawn by her, her voice uttering words of magic, her blade shining brightly briefly. She begins to run back into the situation (again in Corey's wake).

Suddenly the illusion shreds into tatters -- the knights revealed as armored forms dressed in blackened armor, stinking of the grave and oozing droplets of acidic fluid. Hollow, ragged hisses come from their visors, as the dark knights rise to Corey's challenge. One of the knights smoothly vaults into the saddle of his ghostly mount, drawing a massive sword as it carries him across the field. Savagely striking the paladin, nearly sending him to the ground as blood sprays. Another moves to guard the robed figure, while a third rides around from behind the wagon, leveling its sword. A cone of acid bursts from the blade, but Karasu nimbly avoids it while Murder is simply unfazed by it.

Karasu sees that one of the enemies has yet to draw their weapons but the armor is resistant to the spell that he tries to cast upon it and the effort that he puts into casting is to no avail. Even as he rushes forward to Cor'ethil he knows that he is outmatched. "We are outnumbered," he notes to the paladin.

"Also, I would very much like a word with that mage, whoever they are, but with this many enchanted bodies of armor that could prove very difficult. I think they might be undead knights of some kind." Karasu looks at his beloved paladin. "They are quite resistant."

The robed figure recoils from the sudden violence, and then lets out an unusual yelp and dives into the carriage. The door slams shut, and there's the sound of the lock being engaged.

Dirk's eyes get wide, then narrow as the knights throw off their illusory guise. "Beards o' me fathers!" He leaps to his feet and starts trundling down the hillside, racking the slide on his weapon as he goes. He stoops to sweep up a fistful of grass, his boots digging deep furrows in the turf as he skids to a halt. "BY DANA AN' BY GILEAD, -RISE-!" he bellows, sweeping his hand high to scatter the grass blades. The Green Word answers Their ranger's plea. There's a sound like creaking wood as the natural grasses and vegetation begin to writhe, expanding swiftly as though water had just been dropped on a dessicated sponge. Within seconds, the entire dell is filled with a thick, tangled overgrowth--although even as the greenery rises, Dirk makes a sweep of his hand, causing the verging thicket to soften and retreat from the feet of his comrades. They're left with a clear area.

Oh, but he's not done -yet-. Even as he trundles forward to join his mates, he whistles sharply three times through his teeth. "Lulu! That one! KILL!" He sweeps a hand forward to indicate one of the knights--now tangled up in the thicket before Corey and Karasu. With a fierce little hoot, Lulu wings out of the trees and divebombs the knight with her talons outstretched. She quite literally -bounces- off the deadwalker's cursed plate. But she remains in the fight, fluttering her wings and providing a distraction for her master's battle-mates.

"Grave-knights!" Dirk thunders as he readies himself up. "Take care, friends, they pack a hell of a punch! Ye need magicked weapons tae hurt 'em!"

The last knight smoothly draws its sword. The unholy abomination's blank visor moves from Corey to Karasu, not even noticing as Lulu claws at its helm, and then with horrid swiftness its acid-dripping blade lashes out, biting into the one-time assassin's flank as it lets out a gurgling chuckle.

Corey becomes soaked in his own blood from the grievous blows dealt to him. Yet he's apt at playing chess, and the battlefield, for him, in times of stress, becomes a chessboard. He could heal himself. He knows Karasu would want to heal himself. But he knows that his healing isn't as potent as the clerics of Gilead he'd trained alongside in his younger years. Another attack like that from an enemy and he might go down for the count.

Instead, he murmurs the words.

"O Gilead, White Stag, give me the power to bring down great evil," he says. His sword is enveloped in light. Even with blood leaking out from under his armor, he moves like he's perfectly healthy. He lunges out with one hard thrust, striking true and with a shimmer of holy light, then a second, then a third with not as much power and punch behind the first two--but it fills the knight with light, obliterating it from the inside with Gilead's holy power.

Corey huffs a little, before he calls out, "Murder, I bit off a bit more than I could chew! Can you get Karasu a potion?" Yes, Karasu. He saw his beloved get hurt. "I'm fine, by the way!" No, he's not.

Her little legs bring her almost back into the fight before blades are crossed, and Murder pushes herself harder as she watches Corey and Karasu get wounded by the undead knights. Her ears perk up at Corey's request, even as he demolishes the creature.

"Here y'go!", she says as she runs past Karasu as fast as her little legs can carry her, a deep red potion dropped into the man's hands. Her path takes her to the undead critter as it pushes into the area protected by overgrown weeds and grasses. A solid whack from her sword follows.

The knight on horseback stares blankly down at the raging goblin that just dealt it a savage blow. Then it hefts its own greatsword, and begins to slash at Murder in turn, drawing blood and leaving corrosive burns as the blade hisses from each hit. Meanwhile, the other two knights begin to strike into the growth, slogging through the thick brush, approaching the heroes…

Being chased around in circles by armored undead is not his idea of a good time either. "Or at least get around this suit and attack it from behind." Either way they need a better plan.

Dirk flits his gaze about the battlefield, eyes narrowed as he marks his quarry. He gives a trilling little whistle through his teeth. "-Thrr-r-r-r-reet-reet! That one, Lulu! HARRY!" With an answering hoot, Lulu wings her way over to the graveknight on Murder. She bares her little talons and flutters most meanacingly. -She- might not be able to do much herself, but she provides a great distraction for Murder to take advantage of!

Turning his attention back to the graveknight nearest him, Dirk swings up his thunderbelcher. "Gilead, guide my hand," he growls softly as he pulls back on the hammer with his thumb. Once more, the blessed weapon lights up with faintly glowing traceries, like ribbons of sunlight. CHK-BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Three shots strobe brilliantly in succession, each one slamming a faintly glowing crater into the graveknight's breastplate. "Yer time in this world is -done-, filth!" he snarls, ejecting smoking, hissing shells still faintly glowing with the Green Word's radiance.

Corey sees the overgrowth, and he knows it's going to be an awful lot of fighting to get through the undergrowth, and time is ticking. He smiles brightly, a gleam in his eye that proves that he is still the child of Faphinae Cari'thana. He gets bright ideas. Horrible, keen, brilliantly bright ideas.

"Karasu." He says the name so softly, grabbing Karasu as though to embrace him, and he does, but before Karasu can protest (and before poor Wuya on Corey's shoulder can ask what in the world is he thinking), Corey murmurs a prayer to Gilead, and wings erupt from his back. He takes to the sky with a powerful wingbeat, gently taking them both down on top of the carriage. "Here we are!"

And then he kisses Karasu on the cheek for good measure. "You inspire me to have wings of my own sometimes, my nightingale. Now go!"

The Goblin now allows herself to be claimed fully by the red mists that hover at the edge of her vision. "GRAAAAAAH!!" The first swipe removes an arm from the undead, swiftly followed by a leg, taken at the knee. As it begins to fall, she permanently puts its lights out with a blow that cracks its skull open.

Loves the part that wants to be so theatrical when Karasu himself would be just as happy in the dark. They are two sides of a coin. Perfectly balanced.

When they reach the carriage, Karasu slips in through the window, bursting it in and his sword flashes upwards, his dark eyes promising death to the mage whom he had laid eyes on previously. "Call off the armored ones. Call them off of my allies, or your head will roll." There is no arguing with Karasu in this moment. It is simply do... or die.

The robed figure was pawing through the carriage looking for something... anything really. "Dammit, dammit, where is it-- AAAAAAH!" The scream is distinctly high pitched as Karasu suddenly swings inside, backing the mage up against the opposite side of the carriage, her head bumping the curve of the roof.

Wait, her?

Indeed, the 'mage' looks to be barely twenty winters old, with mousy brown hair and wide, terrified eyes, now that her hood is off. "Oh gods oh gods I told him this was a bad idea--" Then Karasu's command catches up to her, and she swallows, trembling. "Token! There's a token, Master Baratheos gave it to me, but I dropped it in here! Please don't kill me! I need the token to command them!"

His eyes narrow at the undead that's quickly approaching. "Oh no you don't!" he says, uttering yet another prayer to Gilead to smite down his foe, and he needles at the knight with three rapier strikes, one of them punching harder into the others. Wings sprout from her back once again, lifting her into the air. And like some sort of Goblin-Dragon, she exhales a bolt of lightning that crackles into the overgrowth. The undead knight seems completely nonplussed by this, continuing it's slow gambol towards the cart.

It makes the mistake of walking under Murder. As if she wasn't RIGHT THERE. Inverting her blade, she plummets down atop it, her weapon punching through skull and armor alike. The angry Goblin tumbles into a pile of armor and bone.
