Alaric was born in the village of Blackbriar, nestled on the eastern side of the Briar Run River just outside of the city. His mother, an herbalist and midwife, and his father, a smith, raised him alongside his two older brothers. Nevik, the eldest, joined the Wardens to patrol the Briarwood borders, while Kyran, the second-born, honed his skills as a smith.

From a young age, Alaric showed an innate curiosity and intelligence, assisting his mother with herbal healing and frequently venturing into the woods to gather materials. A turning point in Alaric's life came when a Hedge Mage was visiting Blackbriar recognized his potential and offered to teach him to read and write. This education ignited Alaric's thirst for knowledge, leading to his enrollment at the Collegium in the city, where he studied history, politics, theology, and more alongside the sons of merchants and tradesmen. It was here that Alaric's natural talent for magic was discovered by one of the wizards and his path towards the Academy became clear.

At the Academy, Alaric excelled in his studies of alchemy, apothecary, and arcane magic, despite facing challenges from nobles who scorned his common birth. His dedication and skill earned him the respect of some peers and the mentorship of esteemed instructors. Recently graduated, he's now on his own to see where this next chapter of his life will take him.

Religion / Faith

Alaric's father is a blacksmith so he grew up in a household that worshipped Reos and respected the efforts and dedication of those who studied a craft or trade. However, as he began to pursue an arcane education he began getting exposed more and more to the teaching and philosophies of Navos. With his nose in a book most of the time and his own motives being knowledge-based, he is in an interesting moment in his personal faith - trying to balance the beliefs of his parents and how he was raised with this new exposure in and after the Academy.

Magic

To Alaric, magic is not merely an instrument of power or spectacle but a practical extension of one's will and intellect, seamlessly woven into the fabric of everyday life. By refusing to tether themselves to a single school, they become adept in the delicate art of balance, capable of summoning flames to light the hearth, conjuring illusions to entertain, and invoking protective wards with equal proficiency. This utilitarian philosophy transforms magic into a tool for every occasion, a reliable companion in both the mundane and the extraordinary. Embracing the Universalist path is to recognize that true mastery lies not in the depth of one's focus but in the breadth of one's adaptability, making magic a harmonious and indispensable part of the human experience.

Artifacts, Antiques and Arcanology

Arcanologists journey to ancient ruins, hidden crypts, and desolate wastelands, guided by cryptic texts and faded maps. Their goal is not merely to acquire powerful artifacts, but to rediscover the fundamental truths of magic itself—truths that might unlock unprecedented potential. They study the relics they uncover with meticulous care, seeking patterns, symbols, and energies that hint at a deeper, more primal source of arcane power. These artifacts, imbued with the wisdom of ancient sorcerers and enchanters, offer glimpses into a time when magic was seamlessly integrated into every aspect of life, society, and the natural world.

Through the pursuit of these relics, Arcanologists hope to bridge the chasm between past and present, to revive the forgotten arts, and to perhaps even surpass the magical achievements of those who came before. They believe that within the echoes of history lie the keys to a brighter, more magical future, where the full potential of arcane power can once again be realized. Thus, the quest for these lost relics becomes not just an exploration of the past, but a journey towards reclaiming the true essence of magic itself.
