Reports have been coming in for several days of sounds of tapping and digging from a marginal section of the catacombs. It's not in the public areas and not quite in the untra-death sections, but isn't really believed to be safe for those moving around alone. Rhodes was asked to collect some adventuresome types to investigate, to deal with the problem or at least determine what exactly is happening.

All of you have collected early one morning, ready to descend into the depths to find out what could possibly be causing these sounds and try to escape alive to collect the reward.

"Thank you for coming," Rhodes offers once again to the three that have joined him. "We have just been concerned about all of this and with recent reports in the city... Well we cannot let something like this stay..." He stands at the gate that leads into the particular section of the catacombs. "Ready?" he looks to Vuk, Zalara and Colrick.

Colrick certainly came prepared, if all the gear strapped to his back and inside of his cloak is meant for the job at hand. In addition to his firearm and the abundance of paper cartridges lining his cloak, it looks like he emptied an alchemy shop to bolster his arsenal. "Absolutely." he answers with a reserved tone, though without hestitation. His eyes survey his comrades before he introduces himself. "Colrick Voss, former soldier." he says with a friendly smile and nod.

Zalara yawns a little bit as it's still early in the morning for her, but she was up late working on her latest invention. She has a insulated mug of coffee that she's slowly sipping. Zalara nods a little bit, "Yah I guess so. So they are hearing tapping and digging...like someone's trying to get in or out?" She asks as she shivers, "I hope you didn't bury someone alive."

Vuk Aleksy! Adventurer Extradionare! Slayer of the Undead! A Gobber, and that means he's at home in the dark, so it is to surprising these sturdy gents and women folk had requested him to attend to such matters? Of course not! Even now he's readying him self, rechecking his sword belt, his long gun. "Friends! Welcome and Merry Met! Vuk Aleksy at your service!" He says with a bow and flourish of his top hat.

Rhodes frowns at Zalara's question, not at her, but the questions themselves and what it could mean. "We think out... We take great care to make sure those that are put to rest here are indeed dead, but the catacombs are vast and there are a great many foul things that have happened here over time. But let us go and investigate ourselves. I am afraid I am not good at tracking things or the fighting, hence why I went to the Guild for help." He takes a big and old key out and unlocks the way into this part of the catacombs, allowing the others to enter before he enters as well, closing and locking the gate.

Zalara smiles at Vuk, "Hello Vuk, I'm Zalara Copperbottom it's nice to meet you." She offers her hand to the goblin.

You travel through the catacombs for some time to get to the area with the noises, and you start to hear from up ahead the sount of rhythmic metal on stone.

GAME: Vuk rolls stealth: (11)+22: 33

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "That'll help if everyone is stealthy, do you want to try?"

The area you are in has vaulted ceilings and long straight hallways, clearly not maintained in a long time. There is no light and no sound other than the tapping from up ahead.

<OOC> Colrick says, "Oh, right, it's dark... can't stealth with Vuk, I'll walk into things :)"

Vuk will firmly push Colrick back, the man is a glumsy ogre compared to him, and he brings the dreaded light. Vuk will move on ahead. Alone.

Colrick eyes the green-skinned scout as he forges on ahead. "<something you don't understand in goblin-talk>"

You paged Vuk with 'The hallway you are in opens up at the end, just at the edge of darkvisoon it looks like it empties into a room, with a side passage off to the right just before. You spot movement in the room, something like a spider about 8' across, crouched in the doorway not moving. Want to go back and report or get closer?'

You paged Vuk with 'It looks like there is something going on right by the spider, and you do spot it moving slightly even though you can see several unhealed wounds on its carapace. It looks like the floor right by it, at the entrance to the room, is moving slightly. Maybe a pool of liquid?'

You paged Vuk with 'It's not anything you recognize. The pool might be a slime of some sort, you'd have to get closer to see for sure, but it's a very thin layer.'

Vuk had went ahead, pulling his hood up as he did and sort of fades into the darkness, it'll be some time before he comes back..slinking along as he does, he some how has his top hat..on UNDER the hood. "Right-o! Seems to be some sort of menace ahead! Big vile thing! I believe you should all proceed with due speed to dispatch it whilst I provide you support from ..." From... some where. "I believe it to be a form of the undead, though it was like a spider. Perhaps you once had sentient spiders in your religious order?" He asks Rhodes.

Rhodes frowns as he hears this about spiders and shakes his head, "I've never heard of anything of the sort. Maybe if I see it I'll have a better chance. How far away is it?"

Zalara hmms, "I've never heard of anything like that. The only mechanical bugs I know about are wasps. Still having trouble reproducing them."

"Oh yes, Vardama's Halls are filled with spiders." Colrick sarcastically replies, stifling a smirk as he glances at Rhodes. "Sounds more Taara's style to bring back a spider." he adds, as he retrieves a perforated metal cylinder from his pack and begins screwing it onto the muzzle of his thunderbelcher.

Vuk doesn't seem to have an exact distance, but if they follow along, he can guide them. <Aka I dunno ask the DM>.

Having travelled through the tunnels and found something dangerous looking, and then prepared for combat, you throw out a light source to illuminate your prey. It is revealed as a decaying giant spider, which stirs into a horrible parody of life.

Vuk watches the light source go sailing out and the spider suddenly jerking to life and begins firing with Colrick!

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Regular rounds now. It's still flat-footed."

Colrick is nicely set-up at his corner with his modified thunderbelcher aimed down the hallway. As the enchanted rock is tossed down the hallway, he squeezes the trigger and lets loose a somewhat-less-noisy shot - thanks to the extra silencer he added - so as to not deafen his allies. Unfortunately the silencer also seems to have completely messed up the ballistics, as the shot falls short and just chips a hole into the stone floor.

Zalara sees the spider as the rock gets thrown. She activates her titan armor. From her octagon shaped backpack comes metal bands that wrap around her torso and upper arms and upper legs. Finally a half helmet moves over her face and her eyes glow lightly.

<OOC> Zalara says, "I'll 5ft step out, draw death ray and zap spider. Ac is 24 now, I forgot shield."

<OOC> Colrick says, "Is that a firearm you used, Vuk?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Good point, Colrick."

<OOC> Colrick says, "Ack, I betrayed my teammate to the DM."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "I do that all the time, for myself. :)"

Rhodes takes his holy symbol and whispers. "Lady Vardama, hear us. We seek to stop these vile creatures in your sacred catacombs, where the dead have right to rest. Bless us as we carry on this task." There is a very minor glow upon the four of them as they gain the blessing of the goddess.

Zalara steps out from the corner and she squints her eyes to see the spider. She takes aim and tries to hit it, but it's too far away and the beam of electrical energy hits the ground in front of it.

<OOC> Vuk says, "also yes, I use a gun"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Firearms misfire with a natural 1, Vuk."

<OOC> Vuk spends round unfucking rifle apparently.

<OOC> Rhodes says, "So it's still down there, out of my line of sight, and everyone is shooting ranged at it."

<OOC> Rhodes says, "So I'm going to ready my Spiritual Weapon for when I see it, but not moving."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Roll gunsmithing, Vuk. DC 10 Standard, DC 20 Move action."

Colrick tries to compensate for the screwy trajectory imparted by the silencer, only this time he overdoes it and puts a whole in the ceiling. "It fills most of the hallway and my bullets are hitting everything but!" he snarls as he reloads yet again.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay, so you still have a standard, Vuk. Do you still need to reload?"

Rhodes listens as the others shoot at the thing using their guns or death rays. Nope, he's not going to look down there in order to see what's happening. He starts another prayer though, his hand moving quickly. "A weapon of strength my lady, to slay this foul creature. Grant me such and it shall no longer plague this holy place." But nothing appears, no, not yet, not until he's ready for it.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "The spider moves forward. It comes clearly into view, you want to go during it's move Rhodes?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Roll attack please for your weapon."

The giant decaying hulk scuttles forward, surprisingly quickly, accompanied by a swarm of tiny spiders that swarm out from it, trying to bite the interlopers. It is silent other than a scraping as it moves.

NOPE. Vuk is literally looking ready to throw his rifle at the thing and take off running, but he fights the urge long enough to fire a shot at what he considers 'Damningly close.' and then skitters backwards, swinging the long gun like a club, you know, just in case before he some how cowers behind Zalara as he slams another cartridge in. "My uniquely attuned Goblin senses tell me this is a good time to employ fire!"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Two skeletons with longbows come into view and shoot at Zalara."

Two skeletons with longbows come into view and shoot at Zalara. Both shots go wide, sliding along the stone corridor.

Colrick's eyes widen as the eight-legged cadaver scuttles forward at great speed. Hopping backwards from his corner as the spider swarm threatens to overwhelm his position, he lefts off a shot at close range that rips into its belly. With practiced speed he reloads and adds a second gaping hole to its exposed belly.

Zalara sees the little spiders start to skidder around and she lifts up one of her wrists. She activates one of her contraptions and a gout of flame suddenly fills the spaces where Vuk and Colrick were. She eyes the skeletons, "I'll get to you two next."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Rhodes, it's a Deathweb, an undead spider. What else do you want to know?"

<OOC> Rhodes says, "Oh, and what did I get for my knowledge roll? It was a 23"

<OOC> Rhodes says, "Ahh, read my mind :)"

<OOC> Rhodes says, "Any resistances/vulnerabilities"

<OOC> Rhodes says, "Special attacks"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Which one? Resist, vulnerabilities, abilities?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Area damage can temporarily destroy the swarm of tiny spiders. That's about it other than it being undead."

A glowing khopesh appears as the spider comes closer and starts to slash at the spider, tearing into it. Rhodes takes a deep breath, not able to see everyone and so whispers another prayer. "Lady, allow me to see their health, let me know how they are doing before they might fall."

<OOC> Vuk says, "actually, five foot step to N 28"

<OOC> Vuk says, "then I'll fire and reload :)"

The spider skuttles closer still and bites down into the shoulder of the one who shot it and made all that noise, chewing into it. The long-dead mandibles appear dry of poison, although they quickly become slick with blood.

Vuk shifts a bit so he can fire at the spider as he begins to back up. "Lantern oil! Douse it in Lantern oil!" He says as a round tears through the side of it's body.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Two more archers come rond the corner, all four shoot at Zalara."

Apparently, Vuk -is- a Slayer of the undead, because as the round slams into the spider, some thing seems to give out, dried dust spraying out and it gives a few twitches as it curls up and becomes still, sand like substance pouring from it's wounds. "Damningly good!" Then Vuk remembers there's skeletons armed with bows too!

Two more skeletal archers appear, all four shoot arrows at the woman with the shield, all in vain.

It is now Colrick's turn! Zalara is next!

<OOC> Colrick says, "5' step back to the corner, rapid shot at skellies!"

<OOC> Colrick says, "Actually, one sec"

<OOC> Colrick says, "Even better... 5' step to corner, free action to drop prone for AC bonus vs Ranged, then rapid shot"

Colrick grins darkly in triumph as the monstrosity curls up like a properly-dead spiedr, but as arrows shatter around Valara, he quickly moves back into a hunkered down position in the corner. Two more shots are set down range, one of them clipping a skeletal assailant.

GAME: 'Spider' removed from initiative list.

<OOC> Zalara says, "Move forward 30 and fire at closest skel"

It is now Rhodes' turn! Vuk is next!

Zalara brings her death ray back up and she goes after the skeletons. She fires her death ray at the closet one and bone flies as the ray of electricity hits it.

<OOC> Rhodes says, "Alright, it's going to be two move actions. Move action to the hall, so to K28, and then seeing the skeletons, move action to move the spectral khopesh to the skeleton in K15, it'll get an attack."

Rhodes moves to where he can see after seeing Zalara head down the cross-hallway. With the light down there, and the skeleton, he sighs. "Knew there was something down here." There is a quick wave of his hand and the spectral khopesh flies down the hallway to the nearest skeleton, in which it attacks with it's magic.

<OOC> Vuk says, "I move to J 25 and then fire at the closest skelly!"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "They all move forward and shoot at Zalara. They are not smart."

Vuk actually has less issues with skeletons, he's actually moving forward and dropping to one knee slightly behind Steampunk Goddess! Then his long gun snarls out with a gout of eldritch powder igniting and a slug tears through a skeleton, shattering it's chest and sending bone fragments across the corridor, he's already loading! "I'd say we've routed them..but I don't think they stop!"

There is another volley of arrows from the remaining skeletons, all missing or being deflected harmlessly.

<OOC> Colrick says, "Eh, I'll stand up as a move action and fire once."

As Colrick's sights are obstructed by goblin, he rises back up to his feet to get a clear shot, only sending a few splinters of bone flying off a rib.

Rhodes comes over as he sees Colrick is looking back. "Here... Before any of their arrows finds us." His hand glows, "Lady Vardama, heal his wounds, let him feel the glory of life once more."

GAME: You damaged Colrick for -8 points. 19 remaining.

It is now Vuk's turn! Skeletons is next!

Zalara aims her death ray at the skeleton and she fires on it. The ray of electricity hits the skeleton and leaves scorch marks on it.

<OOC> Vuk says, "I move to.."

<OOC> Vuk says, "J 22"

<OOC> Vuk says, "then fire at the one in front of me!"

It is now Skeletons' turn! Colrick is next!

Vuk advances forward with his long gun held at the hip before dropping to a kneeling position to let it roar again, the skeleton careerns into a wall before dropping, the bones scattered as the animating force ends it. Another cartridge is being loaded

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "They both drop their bows and move in to swing in melee, one each on Vuk and Zalara."

The skeletons discard their weapons and move in, swinging sharpened finger bones. Both continue to fail to connect.

Colrick nods quickly to Rhodes in thanks, but lines up his sights on the skeletons as the others rush to engage. Choosing to fire over Vuk's head, he takes careful aim and manages to eliminate a few more rib bones.

Rhodes moves forward once he is sure that Colrick feels a bit better, taking his holy symbol off and extending his hand with it. "Feel her love you evil things. Feel the embrace of Vardama and the peace she will grant you!"

Vuk couldn't run away, they'd probably skewer him, so he shoves his Long gun at an upward angle, firing through the Skeleton's hips to drop it down to his face level, and then smash it's skull in with the butt of his long gun.

The final skeleton keeps coming, swinging bony fingers and actually managing to skice into Vuk, but it is quickly overwhelmed by the mass fire of the entire group. The corridor falls silent, undead remains littering the floor.

The room at the end of the corridor is quite wide, a number of sarcophagi lining the walls, most of them already broken open. More interesting is the hole in the ceiling, about 5' across, with a rope hanging out of it and a large pile of earth off to one side. There are also several pickaxes lying on the ground.

Rhodes picks up the rock that has the light and looks at the hole. "Well, shit." Yep, the cleric swore. "Someone has been digging into here..."

"Graverobbers?" Colrick inquires of Rhodes as he gently prods at the edge of the hole with the butt of his firearm.

Looking up the hole it travels into darkness. You are pretty sure it goes up at least 60'.

"Possibly... The spider may have gotten them though... Won't know for sure until we find out where this leads." Rhodes sighs. He hates climbing, is rather bad at it. "Maybe one of you can look up there and see where it comes out?"

Zalara hmms softly, "I wonder what they were digger for?" She looks around as she lets her armor go back and she puts on her goggles to start to look around with detect magic.

Vuk is being quiet, and looking, maybe there's another force at work, after all, he -doubts- skeletons climbed up, and they were not sealed off it seems, did some thing else animate them, he's looking for some thing odd..before they probably tell him he's going down a -hole-.

Looking closely it does indeed look like someone dug in through the ceiling, and the skeletons were working on prying open the remaining sarcophagi.

Colrick grabs one of his Sunrods, sets it alight, and tosses it up at an angle so it lands on the floor above.

Rhodes shrugs as he still looks up at the hole. "Who knows. Gold, rare items. People are buried with all sorts of things. Or a necromancer looking for specific parts for a ritual or whatever depraved act they are conjuring up. All sorts of reasons to break into graves. It's why we protect them."

Colrick catches the Sunrod as it falls back down, his throwing arm not quite strong enough to reach that far up.

Tossing a sunrod up as high as possible shows a darkness about 70' up, maybe a ceiling or a trapdoor. It also brings down a light shower of earth when it falls back.

Vuk has a climber's kit on him, it's more a harness with other things festooned to it, and he looks at Colrick. "Do you mind kneeling down?" He asks.

Zalara hmms as she starts to fiddle around with her gear, "Hold on a moment." She'll actives the contraptions on her boots and gloves.

Zalara hmms as she only sees a low dark room and she frowns, "It looks just like a basement, "hold on I'll go in and try to find something to tie some rope to."

Vuk will come up next, but he can see quite well. "Be quiet!" He hisses and moves to look back down the hole. "I bet we can rig a rope, but every one has to be quiet! There's a door up..and another ladder!"

Colrick stows away his firearm securely and grabs the rope, beginning the climb up to join the others above.

Vuk is also taking 'tactically sound positioning advice' near the barrels. That is, he's hiding, possibly inside one.

Rhodes frowns as he looks around, but says nothing as to which way to go, just holding the lighted stone.

The trapdoor looks to lead inside the building above, the door probably leads directly outside.

Colrick heads over to the door, checking to see if it's locked - and if so - picking the lock to gain entry. "Might as well see where this goes."

Colrick uses some improvised clock tools to manipulate the tumblers, then glances back to the others. "Ready for me to open this?" he asks.

Vuk is as ready as the gobber ever is, Long gun raised out with his eyes and nose from his barrel. He expects the worst, as always.

The door swings open to reveal a back alley in a poorer part of the city, at midmorning. There is nobody in sight.

Colrick gently turns the handle and eases the door open just a few inches so he can peek first, but ends up just opening it wide when it becomes obvious there's no danger. "Alright, the other door then... but at least we have a new exit." he adds, as he heads over to the trapdoor to examine that now.

Rhodes frowns as he peers outside. "Should figure out what house this is, who the owners are. Can come with city guard and paladins in order to make sure that the hole is sealed properly..."

"I agree, once we've seen what lies above us." Colrick replies with a whisper, as he starts opening the trapdoor to have a peek.

The hinges of the trapdoor are squeaky and unused, but Colrick manages to keep them quiet. He peers into a furnished dining room, two chairs and a table, with a middle-aged human woman standing in front of a window facing away. Looks like she is watching the world go by her house.

Vuk is standing in salt fish. It's so old it doesn't smell like salt fish, more like..paper. It's paper fish. "Is there a witch?" He asks over the rim of his barrel.

She is wearing peasant clothing and has a long braid, at least what's what you can see from behind.

Colrick keeps the door propped up steadily with one hand as he leans down to whisper to you all. "Dining room, looks normal. One woman standing by the window. Nothing nefarious, magical, or otherwise worthy of city guard and paladins." he explains quietly.

Rhodes frowns a bit and points at the hole. "That is worthy of the city guard and paladins, to find out who has been digging into the catacombs. Though we would scare the poor woman if she is not in on it and we come out of here. Yet, how do we otherwise prove that we know about this without coming out of her basement?"

When you look back she has turned and is coming over to you, lifting the trapdoor with one hand and looking down. She looks stern and motherly. "Well. I thought I heard people in my basement earlier, and here you are. Care to explain?" She is looking down, unarmed.

NOPE. Vuk's first reaction is to lower right back down in his barrel, even his gun. Just a barrel.

Rhodes sighs when they are caught and he steps forward. "My dearest apologies dear lady. I am Rhodes, Mourner of Vardama. There were sounds coming from the catacombs we protect and I was asked to gather a few brave souls to investigate," he sweeps back his hand to indicate the other three. "We conducted our investigation which led us to finding a hole that leads up to your basement." He then points to the hole. "Ma'am, do you know of anyone doing any work here inside your basement for quite some time?"

Colrick lets out a long 'ummmmm' as he looks back down to the others. All two of them down there, as Vuk is nowhere to be seen. Fortunately Rhodes takes the lead on his, so he just nods in the affirmative. Yup.

The woman peers through the trapdoor in her floor, off to the side to where she can see the dug hole. "That should not be there. No, nobody should be in my basement." She climbs down the short ladder to have a closer look. "That is not good, are there undead digging out of my floor that I should be worried about?"

"And I don't care what she wants!" Colrick retorts as he levels his firearm on her. After seeing the woman shrug off a bullet, and Rhodes proclaim it a vile creature, he acts. "Damn it." Two shots are fired off in rapid succession, the first seeming to inflict more harm.

Vuk may be short, but that just means when he fires it'll hit her in the knees caps! "Knock her down the hole! We can throw a fiery concotion on her!"

"Magic bullets? Happy to oblige." Colrick answers above the crack of gunfire, as he continues to assail her with shot after shot.

Vuk is just firing in a constant barrage, his long gun generally pointing upwards, hammering gun fire out in a non stop procession of drill. "Why isn't the watch charging in!?"

Colrick's continued firing takes a toll on his firearm, causing one of his paper cartridges to do little more than 'pop' and leave most of the propellant stuck inside.

Vuk must take better care of his rifle or some thing! But with his vantage point, or disadvantage point, his shot spirals upwards, if she had vital organs, it would have just sliced through her kidney and lungs as it bounced off bone structure, to come out around her neck!

As the body falls to the floor, the illusion covering her falls away revealing her true form. Rotting vestments hang across her withered flesh, her mouth hangs open in a silent scream. Her vetments look to be of the priests who let you into the catacombs, except old and ragged.

Colrick wrinkles his nose in distate. "That-" he says, pointing at the corpse. "-belongs down there."

Vuk holds up his Goblin Army Knife! See how he's working the levers to the fire starter setting? "No no! We should burn it! It might come back to life again!" Vuk believes in burning most undead as a solution to them not returning.

Rhodes takes a deep breath, just fury eating out of him and relaxes after a moment. "Damn thing.... That was a fallen cleric. We will have to make sure everything is secure and blessed." He shudders a bit at one of his fellow Mourners in such a state.

Searching the house reveals digging tools and not much else. Asking the neighbours reveals that the woman moved in a few weeks ago and was rarely seen. The priests are happy with your performance and seal up the hole, filling it and using magic to close the breach. Who knows what her purpose was, but at least for now the problem appears solved.
