  • Title: Family Matters, part 4
  • Emitter: Thurid
  • Characters: Aimarra, Donna, Ashes,
  • Place: The Jade Isles
  • Time: Friday, April 09, 2021, 2:11 PM
  • Summary: The battle with the human centipede demon skeleton continues, the last, the one with a stolen man's face proving the hardest to kill. Aimarra, Ashes and Donna seem unable to land effective blows on it, as it fights from a corner and attacks all of them. Fire seems the most effective, but it goes after the two wielders, causing one of Donna's spells to fail. Finally, as it is chasing Ashes, the others manage to land blows and a magic missile that destroy it. Everyone is covered in filth after, and Ashes immediately sets the pile of bodies and the web on fire. Moving through this, the Mourner treats herself and the Boxer for poison, and then Donna is heading up a ladder to see what lies in wait above.

With one of the grotesque creatures having burst into a swarm of crawling, vile young which are busy gorging themselves on the pile of rotten corpses, and another laid low by the weapons of the adventurers, only one of the three demonic creatures remains. It's mangled human face split by vicious mandibles, dripping with ichor and the foetid fluids of its human host, it remains hell bent on slaying the group- likely to feed its ravenous young.

GAME: Ashes rolls weapon1: (9)+6: 15

Ashes likes centipedes, Chippen can attest to this. She does not like them when they're some fascimilie of human form, with weird extra bones and organs, with a stolen face. She briefly reflects on the irony, she has a skull masking her own, and they mask their skulls with someone else's. She also doesn't want to feed its babies. She also swings her silvered Khopesh. It cuts a nice arc in the air, hitting only air.

GAME: Thurid rolls 8: (9)+8: 17

The mandibles lash out, but while the Khopesh fails to bite into demon flesh, it does drive the beast back, and deflects its bite away from finding flesh. It hisses in frustration, many rib-legs skittering against the ground as it writhes and undulates, trying to find a better angle to penetrate the Arvek's defenses.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon1+1: (2)+8+1: 11

That raised ledge is proving to be quite the nuisance. In an attempt to avoid the arrow going over the thing's head, Aimarra aims low - too low, as it happens, and the benighted arrow bounces right off the edge of the ledge, to lie at her feet.

Good thing it can't turn around on its own.

GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1-2: (5)+12+1+-2: 16

GAME: Donna rolls finesse+1-2-5: (3)+12+1+-2+-5: 9

The angle is awkward, but that doesn't mean the creature needs to die any less. Crouching at the lip of the ledge, Donna's fist wail upon the creature's back... but nothing offers an angle to get a good, solid hit in. "Ash, back up!" she calls. "I need an opening!"

<OOC> Ashes says, "attack, 5' step to the west?"
GAME: Ashes rolls weapon1: (8)+6: 14

Chippen crawls into Ash's ear, to whisper secrets about attacking centipedes. This is less helpful than it sounds, largely because he's a big bug in her ear. "Yes, I know." The ashen Arvec says in monotone, as her ear flicks wildly.

She swings, that also misses.

She moves to the steps, "Opening."

<OOC> Thurid says, "Centipede will 5' as well and keep going after Ashes."
GAME: Thurid rolls 8: (1)+8: 9 (EPIC FAIL)

The skittering continues as Ashes backs up, mandibles snapping open and closed, stolen organs pulsing ans squelching horridly. It gives chase after the ashen Arvek, but is too zealous in its advance, slamming into the wall of the sewer in a tangled mass of bony pseudopods. It rears up, and emits a foul-smelling bellow of anger, full of spittle in at Ashes in lieu of landing a meaningul attack- as though it were her fault it smashed into the wall.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon1+1: (6)+8+1: 15

Aim is a problem when one is shooting through one's companions's legs. Aimarra seems to quite simply be having no luck hitting the wiggly thing without risking hitting her companions, and she swears, dropping the bow from her hands to draw her sword. "_Enough!_"

<OOC> Donna says, "If I slide into place behind the centipede, is it a 5' step or more?"
<OOC> Thurid says, "going down is a 5' step, going back up is a move action."

"Thanks," Donna grunts in answer, slipping off the ledge and launching another blistering combination of punces... that seems to create little in the way of results.

<OOC> Thurid says, "No damage, I'm afraid. Although it didn't include the +1 for some reason."
<OOC> Ashes says, "it doesn't because Alchemical Silver makes your damage -1, so a +1 Silvered is +0"

Ash swings again, bonking the centipede on it's head, and having her weapon rebound, "I was outfitted for werewolves, vampires and ghosts." She explains, in monotone. Not for whatever this thing is. Cold Iron. It probably needs Cold Iron.

The centipedes snapping mandibles go after Ashes for a moment as she retreats, but as the fists pummel it's back and crack the stolen vertibrae that line its carapace it hisses and rears up. Its long body coils around, clawing against the wall as it doubles back on itself to lunge for Donna- sinking those mandibles into her flesh. Caustic venom surges through the hollow tubes of its monstrous maw to mingle with Donna's shedding blood, rapidly spreading to the nearby muscles and causing them to seize and painfully spasm.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon2: (3)+8: 11

"Ash, stay out of this." Aimarra elbows past the Mourner, sword in hand, and stabs straight downward at the thing, hoping to pin it like some artifact in a wizard's laboratory. No such luck - it squirms too much for that, and she swears again. "_Die!_"

<OOC> Donna says, "Even with DR5, that's not nothin."

As the poison spreads through Donna's veins, the brawler sinks to one side, gritting her teeth. But while the venom may have upset her coordination, it has done nothing about sheer, brute strength.

And Donna has a good amount of strength to brute with, as can be seen by lashing fists cracking away more chunks of bone, whittling the thing away.

"Ok." Ashes says quietly, stepping back into the corner. She takes the time to slip her Khopesh into her haversack, also pulling out her crossbow once her back is up against the wall. It's swiftly becoming one of her favourite weapons, even if she's not very good with it. Step-by-step, she gets ready to reload, looking both down at it, and past Aimarra to watch the battle.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Cenitpede will continue the assault on Donna."
GAME: Thurid rolls 8: (4)+8: 12

The Centipede creature is getting itself tied up in knots, as its body twists and writhes to both try and lash out at Donna and evade her attacks- it succeeds at neither, and is driven back by the force of her blows. Its legs rattle and scrape at the stony walls of the sewer in frustration.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon2: (15)+8: 23
GAME: Aimarra rolls 1d8+3: (3)+3: 6

Scowling blackly, Aimarra strikes again, and this time, blade leaves marks in chitin, and a little bit of nasty ichor seeps forth. "This thing is impossible," she mutters under her breath.

And Donna's fists continue to fly, her frustration mounting as each punch tears the air, only to skip off almost harmlessly. "JUST DIE ALREADY," she roars, pale-blue fire beginning to flicker fom her eyes, a sign that frustration might threaten to tip over into full-blown rage. "YOU'RE USELESS! USELESS! *USELESS!*"

<OOC> Ashes says, "reload and shoot, -4 because into Melee"
GAME: Ashes rolls weapon3: (17)+6-4: 19

Ashlee takes her time, pull the reloading lever free, let the pullers grab the wire, crank it all the way to the back, setting the full draw, let the catchers latch. Reverse and snap it back up against the barrel. Raise, set the bolt, undo the safety. Exhale. People are in the way. Inhale. Hold her breath. Aim. Squeeze.

>Fzzzz-sschsss!<

The bolt fires, between Aimarra and Donna, striking the Centipede. A glowing streak of fire that sizzles as it sinks in.

GAME: Thurid rolls 8: (8)+8: 16

The centipede's fleshy organs boil and bubble away where the blazing bolt sinks into its flesh, and it thrashes about wildly, slamming into the walls and emitting a nails-on-chalkboard screech. It barrels towards Aimarra, but the glassy eyes of its corpse-face are staring past her at Ashes.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon2: (1)+8: 9 (EPIC FAIL)

Unfortunately for Aimarra, that flailing and thrashing about cuts both ways, and her next attempt to stab it nearly results in her stabbing her own boot instead. "Hold still!"

<OOC> Thurid says, "The death of a thousand cuts is working, though, it's looking pretty wounded at this point."

"This is getting *stupid,*" Donna snarls, between punches. "If this thing isn't fuckin' dead in the next few seconds, I'm'a blow it the hell *up.*"

GAME: Ashes rolls weapon3-4: (10)+6+-4: 12

Ashes continues as before, methodically reloading her light crossbow, bringing it up to aim, attempting to get a good line of sight past the others. They're in the way, this would be a bad thing to shoot a friend with, or Aimarra. The ashen Arvek is uncertain what her relationship with the half-elf is, likely be worse if she put a flaming bolt into her. Best... not... too.

>Thock! Sssss<

The bolt goes low, snuffing out in the murky water.

GAME: Thurid rolls 8: (9)+8: 17

The centipede's wild thrashing settles, but it doesn't stop it's assault- it continues gnashing and chomping at Aimarra, but she is too swift for it and it fails to find purchase. And still, it's staring past her at the source of those flaming bolts. It shrinks away from the flaming projectile- clearly not a fan, even when it fails to strike true.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon2: (11)+8: 19
GAME: Aimarra rolls 1d8+3: (6)+3: 9

The sentiment is most thoroughly appreciated, or would be if Aimarra knew it existing. For right now, she is trying to end this creature's existence, by pinning it with her sword to the stone. This time, though, her aim strikes true, and more ichor pours forth from beneath the carapace. "Got any more of that fire?" she calls back.

"Motherf--" Donna snarls, wisps of fire gathering around one shaking fist. But before the spell can properly be released, the centipede sinks its mandibles into her leg, causing the spell to snap apart as the brawler utters a sharp cry. "DAMMIT!"

GAME: Ashes rolls weapon3-4: (12)+6+-4: 14

"Yes." Ashes says, reloading her crossbow, taking the time to aim, breathe. Aim again. No point rushing it if she's doing to miss.

>Ffff-ssss<

She misses. She drops the front to reload again. "I practice lying down. At targets that aren't moving. And are further away."

At the hint of fire behind it, the creature whips around, and lunges for Donna. It sinks its fangs into her shoulder, and presses into her, squeezing and chomping and biting with those vicious claws. Dark ichor oozes from its mandibles, but thankfully Donna is able to shrug off the effects- if not the centipede monster which continues tearing into her flesh little by little.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon2: (12)+8: 20

Aimarra's about to strike - and the thing's just too fast, the blade skittering harmlessly along its carapace as it lunges for Donna.

With her spell completely disrupted, Donna seems to decide to fall back to type; with this being the last of the serious threats, and unable to go anywhere, the only concern is if the babies will finish growing by the time they deal with this one.

GAME: Ashes rolls weapon3-4: (1)+6+-4: 3 (EPIC FAIL)

Ashes starts reloading. She drops her crossbow and the bolt. She stares at it lying in the water, the bolt drifting away. Sighs. Back to basics. Take a breath. Hold it. She drops prone, splashing into the water and takes up her crossbow, rolling onto her back so she can reload again.

"Fucking NO YOU DON'T," Donna shouts as the centipede moves away, her fist arcing down to shatter vertebrae... but there's still plenty of centipede left to attack Ashes.

The centipede hisses as Donna's fists continue to pummel its back- coupled with learning that those fists can apparently catch on fire sometimes, and the bolts coming at it from Ashes- the Centipede demon suddenly takes off, its long body uncoiling as it scuttles up, away from Donna and along the wall, before dropping down almost ontop of ashes and biting into her shoulder- ignoring the blades and fists that pierce and burst its false organs.

GAME: Aimarra rolls weapon2: (6)+8+2: 16

Aimarra, too, lashes out at the thing that continues somehow to plague them when it rushes past, but only the first of her strikes lands, the second missing its tail. At least the first sank in.

GAME: Donna casts Magic Missile. Caster Level: 8 DC: 13

"That DOES IT." With the centipede out of punching range, and Ashes under attack, Donna clenches one fist, building pale-blue arcane fire into her closed fist... then opens it with a wave of her arm, loosing a quartet of painfully bright points of light that streak into the centipede, smashing apart its skull before it can hurt her friend yet further.

Her breathing is ragged as she leans over and rests her hands on her knees. "Okay... Light that pile on fire... And let's go."

The centipede crumples into the fluid in the sewer, too contaminated by now to be truly worthy of the name water. The webbing remains, the corpses still tangled up in it, in the sewer beyond the hidden door and the bars. The defeated demonic creatures twitch occasional, vestigal movements not indicative of remaining life- one would hope.

Ashes has a rather unpleasant view as the centipede thing skitters down the wall towards her. Her mouth is firmly shut. Chippen is circling her head, trying to stay out of the water. He's on the verge of attacking it also. As a centipede himself, he's certain he could bite it somewhere effective. The ashen Arvek is less certain about this, her worried thoughts encourage him to hide.

Her crossbow would complain if it could. Being gnomish in manufacture, it would complain at great length. It's a precision instrument, for long range slaying, and certainly not one that goes swimming in fetid water. It most definitely is not a club, which is what Ashes is preparing to use it for.

Then, the centipede explodes. Ashes stands, filth draining off her and exhales firmly. She nods to Donna, waves for her to move a little and takes the corner. Where she fires bolt after flaming bolt into the pile until it catches fire and the webs go up as well.

"Gods be damned thing, what in the name of the Nightmare's asshole was that thing?" Aimarra, too, slumps, but only for a moment - she isn't as badly bitten as the other two. Just - relief. "Let me get my bow." That doesn't take long, and once she has that, she pulls off her pack and digs on it. "Please tell me I have one of these left."

Ashes beats her to it, though, and she just nods. "Or that."

The webbing catches readily, and transfers the flames to the bodies, boiling off the efluvium soaking their clothes, before finally catching them alight- then the bodies themselves catch as well. It does not improve the smell in the sewer one bit. And smoke begins to fill the space that had been occupied with webs, and spread back into the tunnel- as well as further into the sewers. Hopefully, those in the castle are simply accustomed to foul smells coming from the sewers by now.

<OOC> Ashes says, "channel a heal for everyone, 2 of 5"

"Most centipdes have poison." Ashes states, lower her crossbow once the stink has been replaced by lovely smoke. It isn't making it easier to breathe. She takes a rag out of her satchel, wipes down her crossbow. Hopefully it's silent screams will be soothed. She slides her fancy weapon away. "Chippen does."

She removes a large case from her satchel, so big it has to come out sideways. It looks like a Healer's Kit, "I have some things for poison, if we can find a dry spot and you think we have time."

She also touches at the Holy Symbol on her breastplate, murmuring quietly, "Feiu of the Tears, please, it is not our time yet."

"Yeah," Donna says, as her arm jerks; a combination of fatigue and venom making her muscles fly into a tantrum of their own. "Feels like it... If we ain't expected, then we got time enough for that I think. Last thing any of us need is that shit doin us worse at the worst possible time, yeah?"

The sight of the rag that Ashes pulls out appears to remind Aimarra of a thing, even as she covers her own nose and mouth to avoid the thick, choking smoke. "Thanks for that," she adds as the healing settles over them all. Let's get out of here, or we won't be able to breathe. Stay low." Although her muscles, too, are twitching, it's nowhere near as bad as the other two, and she is able to douse a rag from her pack with clean water from her waterskin, tying it over nose and mouth.

<OOC> Ashes says, "okay, I can healing Hex Donna, which counts as a CMW, once, so I'll do that also"
GAME: Ashes rolls 2d8+8: (9)+8: 17

Ashes nods, feeling the power of the Grey Lady flow through her. A little bit of power. She makes a small snort and stares at the boxer, then gives her a little fist-bump on the shoulder. Oddly, that seems a lot more effective even if it does send a shiver down her spine. "Okay, find a spot. I'll do the poison."

<OOC> Thurid says, "Alright, if you're going through the smoke it's a fort save to avoid being sickened for one round."

Ash uses the cloth she wiped her crossbow off with to cover her nose and mouth. It turns her stomach, having the smoke filter through almost improves the experience. Almost. She follows, moving into the room, past the bodies, the thickest smoke and two of the bridges. It's clearer, and she feels secure enough to set up and work on the poison.

<OOC> Thurid says, "Treating poison is quick, DC 16"

She takes an odd device out of her satchel, a thanatopticon. She waves it at Donna. It tells her the boxer is alive, which is good, and a bunch of other things in small symbols and words she has to stare carefully at. Next, she opens up her healer's kit, compares symbols, finds a vial. It has an odd sort of ball shaped pill, that seems to be made from shredded leaves bound tightly, possibly with something inside.

She holds it out to Donna, with a second vial, "take this, and a sip of this."

"Thanks," Donna says, flexting her bump'd shoulder with a chuckle. Glancing at the foul inferno, Donna looks at Aimarra and nods once, then sucks in a deep breath to hold as she ducks into the fug of smoke, to find a place to sit on the other side. Once there, she accepts pill and vial, and does exactly as directed, handing the vial back to the cleric once done.

Aimarra covers the other two as they wade into the foul smoke in search of clearer air and a resting spot. The wetted cloth over mouth and nose does help, but it takes a strong stomach to even be in that, even if one is not breathing. She waits patiently while the others set themselves to rights, twitching only a little here and there, and waits until they say they are ready to continue.

Now that they have entered the sewer proper, beyond the natural cavern it connects to, the group can see that high above there are a number of holes in the ceiling- likely the latrines, given its a drain. In addition to these, there is a grate at the far end which seems to connect to a channel- probably the storm drain their maps mentioned, which flushes rainwater caught on the castles rooves through the sewer system. An ingenous way to kill two birds with one stone, provided it rains often enough to flush the sewer, and the grates aren't clogged up with corpses.

There is a ladder set into the wall, which leads up to a hatch- likely how servants would come down here to deal with clogs and the like, in times of need.

GAME: Ashes used a Healer's Kit.
GAME: Ashes rolls heal+3: (19)+13+3: 35

Ashlee watches as Donna swallows, then waves her Thanatopticon once more and looks at the symbols, "Poison is gone. Effects will take time to clear. I don't have a spell that will speed that up. Sorry."

It should be the same treatment for herself, the Mourner speculates, but she is an entirely different species. She points her device at herself. It takes a moment, and a shake, before it very reluctantly confirms that she is also alive and suffering a vareity of conditions. The symbols look much the same, so Ashes takes the leaf-pill and a sip. "We're good. Let me pack up." She puts things away.

"Thanks again," Donna says, climbing to her feet, once confirmation of the pill's effectiveness is reported. Turning, she peers up at the ladder, and the hatch it ends in, and heads forward. "Lemme," she grunts. "If there's a face t'bite, better it's mine first."

That said, she hauls herself up, raising the hatch as quietly as she can at the top.

Ashes puts her hand on the ladder, and waits.
