  • Summary: Following rumors of an ancient crypt potentially full of treasure and danger in equal measure, a band of adventurers travel to see for themselves. Their first trial- a well sealed door. After Smuldur's careless probing, the crypt's slumbering guardians awaken and attempt to drive the adventurers off. Aimarra's keen eyesight and quick thinking get the door open, and the guardians return to their slumber for now.

Rumors of long forgotten crypts and the possibility of gold and gems are hard to ignore, and so the adventurers assembled today have heard the rumors over a pint or an evening supper at one of Alexandria's many fine establishments. After looking into it a bit further, they have found one another and decided to undertake the journey to this crypt together.

Airship passage to the nearest decently sized settlement was procured, and uneventful, as has been the journey to the crypt's vicinity. Now they are upon it- just as night is beginning to fall. It is situated amidst a stretch of sparse woodlands, sickly-looking birches and spindly oaks absent of leaves.

The building itself is relatively simple- a circular mound, cut into the side of which is a doorway- the stone doors have been pried and left open by previous explorers. Atop the mound is an ancient and crumbled statue of Osorin- an aged and robed longbeard, carrying an orb in one hand and a longsword in the other, and gazing imperiously to the sky. There is some sort of epithet attached to the base of the statue, but the once shining plate has been weathered to a crumbling green stain with the passing of time.

<OOC> Glasha says, "Can I use mending on that, or do I need Make Whole?"

<OOC> Culix says, "Mending only works on small objects."

<OOC> Culix says, "up to 1lb per level, the statue is significantly more than that."

<OOC> Glasha says, "Prestidigitation could clean it, but that might not make it legible. Still, I'll use my Cloak of the Hedge Wizard to Prestidigitation it clean."

<OOC> Culix says, "Pose your cleaning, and I'll pose what it turns up."

Smuldur liked the airship travel. Everyone below was so tiny! Puny! It's a nice change from walking. The glowing parts of the airship engines were mesmerizing to watch. All in all, no reason to set it aflame!

Now they went back to walking, and Smuldur carries his lit torch high. Whether or not they need the light, there's always a need for fire. Or burning things. Which is easier with fire.

Glasha looks over the statue and looks at the plate. Squinting at the plate, she tries to read it, but soon reaches out, touching it as magic flows through her clothing and into her body, finally flowing out her hand. The oxidation almost seems to evaporate away, revealing the shiny, non-oxidized metal beneath.

By now used to the pyromaniac gobber, Aimarra just shakes her head, watching as Glasha attempts to clean the plate. "Think we can make that readable?"

Though parts of the plate are too corroded to read, even with the layer of greenish oxidization scoured away by magic, it is partially legible and reads:

"He_e __es O__rin, g__at__t ___cer__ __ h__ t_me." beneath the original inscription, there is another message- scratched in later, and also only partially legible. It reads: "___d r___ance"

Smuldur peers at the now perfectly legible (to him!) plate. "Orin. Time... dancer.. Lots of shinies from time and dancing! All here!"

He leaves the plate for the opened door (even more convenient for them!) to peek inside for shiny, timey, and/or dancing things. Preferably shiny!

Glasha squints. "It's an epitaph," she says. "Here lies O-somebody, great, maybe. Wait, no. Might be sorcerer. Someone else has written, 'Good Riddance' underneath, so whoever it was, they weren't well-liked."

Aimarra smirks, nodding at Glasha's assessment. "_Here lies Osorin, greatest sorcerer of his time._ Well, he sure thought a lot of himself, if this tomb is any judge." She looks up at the massive statue over the door. "Good riddance, yes. Not many people actually like someone like that. But, the door looks as if it's already been forced. Either any treasure is long gone, or there's a nasty trap inside, and we're like to find a bunch of bones."

Peeking through the open door reveals a couple of things- one, a set of stairs, each step apparently hewn from a solid piece of stone, leads down directly from the entrance. There are candelabra's, ancient and rusted, fixed to the walls but whatever candles they once sported have long since burned to nothing, and now hold only dust and cobwebs. And thus- the second thing is noted. It is pitch black, beyond where his torch banishes the shadows. He can see the stairs lead down some twenty feet, but not much beyond that.

Glasha stands. "We're likely to find bones either way," she says. "Mostly because people are idiots and won't cremate their dead." She readies her axe-staff and moves toward the door. "I can see down there," Glasha says, looking at the other two. "I forget what races can see in pitch blackness. I'm guessing you guys can't?" She raises a hand. "Do you need a light spell?" she asks Aimarra.

"I see well by starlight, but I am no cave-troll to make my way in the dark. The torch will suffice me. Shall I lead?" Aimarra lets a small smile accompany the question.

Glasha smirks. "Better you than me," she retorts, lowering her hand to her greataxe and lofting it, Luna's wings flapping as the bird maintains balance.

Descending the stairs is easy enough by torchlight, they are well hwen and even despite the ages passing them by. They lead down to a flat corridor that seems to open up into a square antechamber. The floor is made of large broad tiles of granite, cool and dusty. If anyone has broken in, it was not recently- there are no tracks in the dust save for the adventurers. Arriving in the square room at the end of the short hallway confirms Aimarra's suspicion, though. In the center of the room is a skeleton, yellowed with age, with the skull seperated from the body and the vertebrae of the neck shattered. A rusty longsword still clutched in bony fingers.

There is also an abandoned traveling pack, left behind by the unfortunate skeleton's companion perhaps, mouldering and rotted to a sad pile of withered leather scraps.

At the southern side of the room, there is a door- sealed shut. The door seems to be cast of stone, and has a circular section where the two halves meet- insisde of which is another, smaller circle. An array of indentations are carved into the smaller circle, a perculiar pattern not disimmilar to one of the well known constellations.

Flanking the door in alcoves on either side are a pair of statues, hewn from stone, each depicting an imposing armored knight- and each clutching a great sword, tip pointed towards the dais upon which they stand, and hilt gripped in both hands.

<OOC> Aimarra says, "Which constellation?"

<OOC> Culix says, "The Scales, a minor aspect of Rada"

<OOC> Culix says, "Profession/Astrologer or Knowledge/Religion for insight into the symbol on the door."

<OOC> Culix says, "Actually, sorry, /nature is more applicable than /religion"

GAME: Aimarra rolls knowledge/nature: (18)+9: 27

"Cave troll big. Clumsy. Smelly," Smuldur notes as he skitters down the stairs, partially propelled by flatulence. He isn't any of those things! Well, not most of them. He can see well enough without the torch, but even better with! And, of course, fire is better than not fire.

"Clumsy, too," he offers wisdom while pointing to the bones. The rusty sword is shiny enough for his tastes, and is tucked into his belt/pouch/loincloth. He inspects one statue, then the other, before coming to a stop to stare at The Door.

Aimarra's expression twists into a rueful smirk. "Thought so." She looks down at the headless skeleton, shakes her head, and turns her attention to the doors, keeping herself where she can see both those statues as she studies it. "The Scales," she says finally. "Level at Midsummer, but tip depending on the season. Its alignment is not quite right..."

Glasha watches Smuldur shove the sword, longer than the gobber is tall, down his pants. She grimaces. "Oh, that's nasty," she says. "Don't cut yourself on that rusty metal," she says, still wincing at the display.

"Scales?!" Smuldur looks around the floor, then up on the walls and ceiling for scales. "Dragon?" That would explain why there's said to be so many shinies here...

He then looks to Glasha with a wide grin and pats his new acquisition. "Rust makes sharp!" Then his attention is back to the most obvious other large thing in their way. It isn't a dragon, but it's still annoyingly between them and gold. Not to mention not very flammable. After stepping close to the door to apply more peering pressure on it, he jabs it some with his torch (in case it might be flammable!) and then growls, "Open!" It could be magic, or timid!

As Smuldur whacks the door with his torch, he seems to have woken something up. The statues either side of the door lurch alive, lifting their blades and stepping down off their pedestals, lifting their greatswords up and crossing them to bar the door. They do not say a thing- they probably aren't capable, but a betting man would put decent odds on them being the reason the skeleton is no longer attached to its skull.

Round One - Init 12.

It is now Smuldur's turn! Guard Statue 1 is next!

Smuldur ah-hahs and points at the moving statues, in case anyone missed them. They're obviously the key to getting the door open! He looks between them and points his torch at the door. "Open door!" They're men, flanking a door, so supreme logic dictates that they're -obviously- doormen.

GAME: Culix advances the initiative order.

Round One - Init 12.

It is now Guard Statue 1's turn! Guard Statue 2 is next!

The statues remain steadfast, despite the brandishing of a torch at them. They stay there, blades crossed, barring the door. But now that the striking has come to an end, they don't seem particularly motivated to attack- clearly they have their orders, after all this time, and a little poking isn't enough to put them in seek-and-destroy mode.

GAME: NEW ROUND!

Round Two - Init 20.

It is now Glasha's turn! Aimarra is next!

Glasha watches the whole exchange. "They're guardians," she informs Smuldur. "I don't think they'll hurt you if you don't do anything crazy, but probably shouldn't antagonize them." She seems to realize the intelligence she's dealing with. "Don't fight the statues or touch the door again," she says, "and they won't cut your head off."

"Whoa! Damn it, gobber, get out of there unless you want to end up like this poor bastard." Aimarra jerks her chin at the skeleton on the floor as she backpedals, but abruptly pauses, and pulls from the backpack a golden disc with a handle on one side and indentations on the other.

<OOC> Glasha says, "Glasha is going to bravely stay out in the hallway within easy reach of the exit, holding her action for if the statues become hostile or the broken door suddenly closes."

It is now Aimarra's turn! Smuldur is next!

<OOC> Aimarra says, "Approach the door with the key in hand, and wait to see what they do. And be ready to vamoose if they look hostile."

Round Two - Init 12.

It is now Smuldur's turn! Guard Statue 1 is next!

So saying, she advances cautiously on the guardians, watching them closely and stopping a few feet away. "Get out of there, gobber."

Smuldur eyes the guardians suspiciously and scampers back a few steps. Ears flop as he then looks to the others. "Make open door!" Back ahead, which is now blocked by stone doors AND stone guardians! They're making negative progress!

GAME: Culix advances the initiative order.

Round Two - Init 12.

It is now Guard Statue 1's turn! Guard Statue 2 is next!

"It'll be alright, buddy," Glasha says. "Hopefully Aimarra has the key, and hopefully they'll respect that." She then watches Aimarra and the statues expectantly.

The guardians remain stationary and resolute- whatever trigggered them to wake up, aparrently isn't reset as easily as simply stepping a few feet away from them. Stone helmets gazing directly ahead, perfectly motionless.

As soon as that sword comes down, Glasha begins casting. Her voice makes sounds it shouldn't be able to while her hand gestures in ways that should break it. As the eldritch comes forth, Luna speaks from atop Glasha's greataxe. "Oh, you're gonna get it!" she says, like a young child whose older sibling was about to be punished.

This seems to be the final straw for the hulking brutes, and as embers skitter across uncaring stony armor, the one nearest smuldur turns its stone helmet down to look at him. It lifts its greatsword onerously above its head, and then brings it crashing down- missing the goblin, and gouging the tile of the floor.

The other steps in towards Aimarra as she retreats- and urges the goblin to do the same. It seems that whatever magnanimity they had has been exhausted- and they are now out for the interlopers blood.

"Yes! Burn!" Smuldur gleefully calls. Assurance to Aimarra? Challenge to guardian? All of the above? Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be acting very politely. It isn't cracking, or falling down, or even on fire! how rude!

<OOC> Culix says, "Statue 1 turns its back to Smuldur and attacks the earth elemental beating on the door. Statue 2 attacks the one nearest it."

It seems that goblins with firesticks go on the backburner when something is beating on the door it was built to protect. The statue Smuldur struck turns away from him as the earth elemental appears next to it. It lifts its sword high in the air above it, and then slams it down right ontop of the earth elemental- almost cleaving it in twain with the mighty strike, which sends dirt and pebbles skittering across the granite floor. The elemental still lives, but barely.

The other statue turns towards Aimarra as she dashes past, and tries to step towards her- but finds itself colliding with the newly summoned elemental near its feet. So it swings its mighty sword towards this particular obstacle- and clumsily misses, chipping a fresh rent in the tile.

It is now Glasha's turn! Smuldur is next!

Aimarra's committed now. If this doesn't work, she's probably just punched her ticket for the Gray Halls, and well she knows it. Sometimes, though, the only way out is through, and she continues to push the key to the door with all her strength, ignoring the pitched battle behind her in the desperate hope that opening the door - properly, mind! Will deactivate these massive things, but she sure isn't likely to be able to hurt stone!

The guardians, for what they posess in strength and durability- they lack in agility and accuracy. So as they both lift their blades above their own head, and then bring them crashing down in unison once more, neither of them finds their target and both crash into the floor. The noise is near defening, but, ultimately- harmless.

Smuldur eyes the guardian, eyes his torch, eyes his semi-shiny-partly-rusty-new-sword... eyes Torchie again. With a snarl of rage, he drops Torchie to fight on it's own! (Ok, not really) and then pulls the biggunized sword out of his waistband. Hopefully without cutting anything important. Like his pouch/covering. "Ahh!" He then swings the mighty thing overhead and clangs it into stone. It's just stone of the wall, not the statue.

Glasha stands, leaning on her staff, still in the hallway unless something forced her into the room, watching her elementals be rock shields as opposed to meat shields. She shakes her head as one whiffs. "Oy, you two get on opposite sides." One of the elementals slides into the ground, disappearing like a shark beneath the waves. The earth behind the statue grows an amorphous head, then arms and finally legs before the two on opposite sides punch together. Dust rattles out of pre-existing cracks on the statue as a few pebble-sized chunks fall from where one struck. "Yeah, that makes sense," Glasha mutters to herself.

Yay! Aimarra got it! No the guardian's going to get it! Smuldur pauses, spits on his hands for better grip and to clear his throat, then swings the taller-than-he rusty blade at the guardian again. *CLANG!* Success! He... takes a little chip off the old block.

The statue lurches as the rusty old sword prevails where ol' torchie failed, and chips off a hunk of its stony forearm. It turns away from its earth elemental target and towards the goblin, re-assessing Smuldur's threat level. It lifts its blade high above its head and then swings it down hard, planting the sword firmly in Smuldur's shoulder. It wrenches it free and begins to lift it again.

The other statue is not so lucky at striking its own undersized target, the blade falling wide and crashing into the ground infront of the elemental instead of striking it. It begins to lift its blade again as the rumbling of the door comes to a stop. Its movements begin to slow, slow, and finally stop- blade hefted high above its head and ready to crash down once again.

The door unsettled a lot of dust as it opened, stone grinding against stone as some ancient mechanism drove it, but the dust begins to settle and reveal the room beyond- a long hallway, lined with alcoves. In each of the alcoves is a skeleton, posed upright with arms folded across their chests- and still wearing the tattered remnants of arms and armor they were buried alive in.

Aimarra turns her back to the opened doors, hoping against hope to find a way to stop the things - and as they grind to a halt, a _whoosh_ of air escapes her lips in relief. "Damn. I was right." She straightens, brushing herself off, and turns to examine their next task.

Smuldur growls and drools at the re-statued statues for a moment, then shaks his head (flinging away excess drool) and seems to calm down. "Broke! Broke 'em all!" Even the one he didn't hit! Then his eyes catch on the bones, tatters, and possibly shiny things within. Unlike stone, most of that list will burn...
