Preliminary Siege
Encampment just outside the Felwood, Noon
The awful weather had a reprieve on this day, thankfully the distance from the city afforded nothing more than an overcast sky that held no shade. The encampment, acting as as forward operating base for Alexandria and Mythwood, is starting to take hold.
However, recent scouting embarkments meant the base was a little too barebones on manpower. Contracts are offered and sent out to the Exploerer's Guild for some folks that can do a little bit of heavy lifting. Or, some assembly required, as there's been a shipment of siege equipment and weapons that need to be set up on the walls and palisade.
"Come on now, quit dragging ya feet!" a khzad woman, having introduced herself as Slatesteel, is overseeing the shipment and placement process.
Amongst the shipment is a plethora of siege equipment: a couple of ballista, the workings of a catapult, and... a barrel of thunderbelchers? A couple wagons of rocks?
Culix had signed up for the job not because her particular expertise seemed as though they would be especially useful in the endeavor (although Goblins have a near-innate affinity for all things explosive, whether they like it or not) but rather because she is saving up for some big purchases and can't really be picky about what jobs she's taking. The Goblin arrives on her horse, oversized for her as it is, and dismounts with some difficulty. She scratches the side of her head as she looks around for where she's likely to be most useful, and given that she's hardly the largest or strongest present, decides she's best off heading over to help with checking the powder stores to make sure it hasn't gotten damp on the way.
Khepri stoically helps move supplies, without complaint or commentary. The wargolem is taciturn, though it speaks as needed. Currently, its assisting in moving the catapult workings into position, before returning. "I do not have the necessary skills to help assemble a siege engine. What needs to be moved next?" The yellow eyes sweep over the swarming encampment, and it absently swipes a bit of mud from its beaked faceplace.

Schara is taking her time getting there, having elected to walk most of the way. So it wasn't until well after the others that the metal clad artificer arrived, looking a bit tired, but still ready to work. "You have the skills to help, not everyone making a siege engine needs to know what they're doing, otherwise there would never be enough people to actually make one." Schara shrugs. "That is a lot of thunderbelchers, and a lot of gold. Just what are they doing here exactly? It's a forest."
A large bundle of cloth is walking across the encampment as well - stiffly, but moving with red ribbons hanging off his horns. Aelwyn was _not_ enjoying the weather and he was reconsidering his choices of tasks currently, but coin was coin. Besides, maybe he could find few more chances for extra coin out here. That was what he was told in the tavern.
He was very impressionable for a sith-makar. Heaving a heavy box by Khepri he lets out a long hiss and stretches upwards, body letting out inevitable sounds. At least his scales were only cracking slightly. "There is large long _something_ that needs lifting, Khepri. It has shiny parts." The draconian says and takes a wineskin, taking a heavy sip. The scent of strong spices would be evident to anyone near him. Maybe not to a golem.
Slatesteel has come over to assist with the catapult, her barking orders to get this piece attatched to that and what not. "As long as yer coin ain't nickin' any of this stuff, boy, I don't right care how ya get it. Quit ya drinkin' and help with lifting, you ain't done."
Culix takes a quick look over the powder stores, and finds- ah, yes, it has gotten damp. Sort of. With quick work, she's able to discard the ruined portions of powder to leave the rest a-ok to use. And in the meantime with help from the others in the camp, the entire barrel of belchers is loaded.
"Brass wants ta make sure we're readying for whatever weird shite comes outta them woods," Slatesteels grunts to Schara as she's pulling on a horse that has the wagon of rocks. "And they ain't pullin' punches on it."
Meanwhile, the other equipment is getting put into place, ballistae in the walls, half made and pointing out fortified slits, rocks being brought up into piles on raise platforms behind the walls. The catapult is half constructed as well.
"You've never really /ready/ for the weird shit that comes out of the woods." Culix retorts then, to no one in particular, dusting the remnants of powder from darkened fingertips. Less inclined to spontanious combustion than most of her kin, she's not keen on being covered in black powder, damp or not. "But I take your meaning." she adds then. "Got scouts and such out there?" she wonders.
Khepri is directed over to help with getting the catapult assembled by one of the junior engineers. The relentless Executor helps slot the main arm into place, the heavy beam resting on its shoulder as it turns to look at the others. "Firearms are a fascinating development. I might requisition training on their usage at some point in the future." The long legs flex as the throwing arm is solidly latched into place, and the tension assembly is now being put together. "However, in the meantime, I will continue with what works."
Aelwyn tilts his head and pulls his scarf back over his face - giving a bit of a roll of his head at the shouting. Yet, the booze gave him a fire and that fire made sure he was not feeling completely catatonic in the weather. "So Brass is the reason why everyone is here pulling siege weapons into the middle of nowhere?" He amusedly asks from Schara, until he starts hoisting the next box of bolts and fasteners. "The woods must have had a really bad diplomatic faux pas."
With amusement, he carries the box over Khepri, continuing to play the delivery boy between moving boxes and other smaller pieces of equipment. Occasionally he'd stop by and talk to one of the other workers, or exchange few words, to hear their take.

"Well, it seems they're preparing a lot. I hope it is enough, at least." Schara shrugs. "I take it this is to be closer to where you expect something to show up? Several trebuchets would keep the crew working them safer if anything happened, since they would be farther away."
"I did not make this plan Aelwyn. I have as much knowledge of what is going on as you do."

Slatesteel watches over everyone, but she scowls at Schara. "Oi! Brass can. Move your metal ass, talk and gab!" She grunts, picking up a massive rock and dropping it onto the ground next to the contraption. "Yae, small'uns right. Gots some weird shit popping out of the woods, so security's amped up."
She nods to Culix. "Ye. Scouts are out right now. Should be back any time now."
Through the team's efforts, all of the siege equipment is constructed and, more importantly, loaded and ready. There's a skeleton crew for every implement, just shy of a full crew. Javaliens in a crate are collected near Aelwyn upon the wall, and the last of the head sized rocks are placed upon the battlements just in case that-
"Uhh... somethin's comin' this way?" a rosy cheeked gnome mentions, pointing out from behind the stack of ballista bolts to the open ground.
Bursting out of the woods is a disheveled half-syl man, hair torn and blood on his clothes, a broken bow dragging behind him as the string caught on his boots. "SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! They're COMING!"
There's a near roar. The woods rustle, threatening to spill out the first wave of whatever is to come out of the forsaken woods.

The forest... the cursed forest writhes and yells. And a bellowing beast crashes through, chasing down the poor scout. An amalgam of fur and feathers, a half-bear, half owl monster bears down with their claws, screeching as it sinks in and drags him to a halt.
The trees rustle... more is to come.

Culix had snagged one of the firearms from the barrel for herself- a stocky one sized for gnomes and goblins. She doesn't usually use one, but, well- she'd rather have one and not need it than need it and not have it. She finds a spot up on the wall where she can keep an eye on the tree line and keep her own head down and out of sight and waits with the rifle ready and beady eyes peeled. When the scout comes running and screaming of danger, she chances a glance down the length of her rifle until she spies the... thing coming. She squeezes the trigger, and winces- her sensitive ears ringing from the loud bang of the alchemical powder that drives the projectile. She leaves it where it lays, rather than trying to reload it in a hurry, and draws her little crossbow from where it hangs under her cloak as she sidles along the wall to get another angle on the beast.

The forest continues it's spillage of unnatural and mangey beasts. A trio of spiders, large as men, skitter and scrawl into the daylight at a brisk pace. One almost stops to consider the man about to be owlbear food, but instead turns with the rest of their arachnid buddies.

Khepri would widen its eyes, if it could, as the woods erupt with angry monstrous creatures behind the hapless scout. "Stand ready!" its metallic voice rings out. "The eyes of the Harpist judge you this day! Show her your valor!" The blessing washes over many of the assembled warriors, as Khepri draws its heavy khopesh. He holds the blade high, and a glimmer of light races down it. "Her will, not mine, be done," the golem intones.

Aelwyn was standing still at the top of the ramparts, staring with his orange eyes at the first scout running out. Then at the critters running out, only giving a slight tilt of his head at the... creatures. Slowly, measuredly, he picks up one of the javelins near him. "No truer words have been spoke in TarRaCe." The Dragoon ruminates by himself - before he flings his cloak open and stretches back to throw the spear at the nearest creature...
... and barely throws it over the wall. It takes a few throws to warm up.

Schara was caught off guard during some further checking of the catapult by the commotion. On the bright side, they were standing immediately next to a catapult. While it could not launch a ninety kilogram stone projectile over three hundred meters, it could send the ammunition the guards brought with them far enough to smash into one of the assaulting creatures.
"Please get that catapult back up to tension, and have the rest ready to load it immediately after." The artificer instructs before running off to the wall. Whoever was shouting didn't sound like they were in the best shape.
The owlbear rears its head up high, about to disembowl the poor scout, they come down-
>SMASH<
The rock from the catapult rocks the ground, throwing them off, allowing the half-elven man to slip free! "Thank gods!" he cries.
Heeding the mangy bear's orders, it shoves them aside and makes a gallops towards the walls.

Culix peeks back above the wall, finding the spiders much closer than she is comfortable with- and with the Owlbear distracted and its meal spoiled for the time being, she decides to prioritize her own safety for the time being. She looses a bolt from the bow towards the advancing spider, and the bolt strikes true, passing clear through the spider's Cephalothorax and out the other side, spilling shattered chitin fragments, and ichor. "They're common beasts, but something has corrupted them!" she calls out to her allies, putting her back to the wooden pallisade as she loads a fresh bolt into her crossbow.

Surprised by the sudden onset of violence beset upon the encampment, those working the ballistae fire out their shots. One goes high and sails into the woods, but another crashes into one of the spiders, disabling some of their legs. The shot messes up the spider attempting to encase Aelwyn in webs, but the other one mounts the battlements, ducks under khepri's blade, and bites its fangs into armor!
"Keep firing!" Slatesteel booms from the back.

Khepri, for its part, isn't daunted by the spider trying to gnaw on it. Instead, the golem pulls free, and shifts its judgement, energy starting to race up and down its frame to repair damage as it swings savagely with its khopesh. Unfortunately, the golem is off balance and the blade sinks into the wooden parapet with a loud THUNK like an axe biting into a log.

Aelwyn sees the critters running up the ramparts rapidly, and he gives up on the plan Javelin very quickly. Instead he hoists up his glaive in his hands, the red ribbons fluttering in the air. Giving it a twirl in the air, he takes few steps forward - and chunks it down onto one of the many limbed beasts down below. With barely a sound, the sliding glaive gently slides off the spider's head. The many-eyed head clings onto the blade as the Dragoon sith-makar turns his eyes away and runs up along the edge of the ramparts, balancing over the door frame.

The owlbear takes a few steps back, glances to the side at the walls, then charges forth, leaping up into the air! Aelwyn's glaive slices into its side, but one claw sinks into a scaled leg, and the other three digging into the wood and scraping, making long gouges. Aelwyn is just barely able to hold onto the doorframe and keep his balance from yanked off.

Culix spies the Bugbear sneaking towards the base of the wall, and she grunts. She drops her crossbow on the platform, and then hops up onto the narrow parapet she had been using for cover- keeping low, walking one front in front of the other with practiced ease on the narrow surface. Upon reaching the end of it, she jumps off, dagger at the ready- Seeing the Bugbear preparing an alchemist's fire she lands on his shoulders- one hand grabs his chin and wrenches his head to the side. The dagger is plunged deep into his throat, twisted, and then punched forwards to tear apart the jugular and windpipe.
She hops off the bugbears collapsing form and lands gracefully on her feet, turning her attention towards the beasts she now shares the floor with.

The last remaining spider seems to loose its directive after someone gets their windpipe forcibly removed by blade, it chitters and screeches as its hacked, slipping past and biting onto the easy meal of the scout. He almost faints, falling against the side of the palisade to prop himself up.

The damage done by the spider's fangs is already mending back together as Khepri whirls, seeing the spider lunge at the scout. "No," the golem sounds out. "You will -not-." Swiftly, the Executor vaults down, blocking a wild snap with its shield. Then the golem has the spider between Schara and itself. Hammer and anvil, as it brings the khopesh down with an axe-blow that splits the giant arachnid's carapace and spills its guts and innards on the ground.

The ruddy sith-makar hisses as he makes his way to the other side.

While there was a remaining threat, Schara turns around to see the scout cowering behind them, either out of fear, or simply being incapable of doing much else at the moment. The artificer pulls out a small device, and sticks it on one of their arms, where there is a sharp prick as the center of the square glows a light orange, before dimming and falling away, mending the worst of any wounds and stopping any immediate bleeding.

Culix spares a moment to glance at the Alchemists fire to make sure the Bugbear didn't get around to actually lighting it, and happy it's no immedite threat, Culix ducks low and creeps across the no-man's-land between the parapet wall and where the clearcut border gives way to the treeline. She gives the Owlbear a wide berth as it batters at the door, eventually coming up behind it.
The dagger held in her fist is swung out, and buried to the hilt into the beast's flank, right about where its liver ought to be if she knows her owlbear anatomy. A twist, and the dagger is withdrawn along with a gout of blood. But the beast doesn't fall, and Culix pales having revealed her position. "Uh. Help." she calls out to her allies.

Khepri comes sprinting back up the stairs, clanking loudly as it brushes past Schara and Aelwyn. Running over to the edge of the parapet where the owlbear is attacking the door, it takes note of Culix sinking a blade into the owlbear's back. As the beast turns, the khopesh comes up, flashing with blazing light as Khepri reverses the grip, and drives it point down -- splitting the owlbear's skull with a CRACK. The creature freezes, then crumples to the ground, as the Executor flicks the sword to dispose of any blood.

As the owlbear's temperament is put to rest, having been stabbed, shot, and sliced to a cracking finale, the battlefield harriment comes to a still. Dust still lingers from the crackshot of a catapult boulder in the field, and the creaking of ballista swiveling to and fro for the next target is the only other sound.
Except, its broken by the scout sighing in relief as Schara gives him medical attention. He hacks and coughs, spitting up blood. "Guh... th... thanks..." he barely manages to say, wobbling to his feet as he pulls forth a satchel. And takes out a small journal that's filled with various leaves and other bits and pieces of the Felwood. "Had to... had to get back... found out some... *cough*- pockets of where ruins are at..."
Slatesteel ambles forth, a ballistae bolt held over one shoulder and a tobacco pipe in the other. "Well thas some good shite there, yeah? 'least our equipment's runnin' good! I'd say tha's a good days work right there. Geraim, come on kid, lets get ya to the lad runnin' this joint," she motions towards the Scout.
"... uh, does anyone know how to unwind a catapult...?" a poor soul nervously asks from the backline.
