  • Summary: The Valethor Gang attempts to rescue Delilah by coating Ash's Silvered Khopesh with their blood, in the hopes that this will confuse the mirror enough to let the blade penetrate. They press it up against the glass while the Mourner channels Vardama's divine favour. Alas, it does not work. It does awaken Delilah. Donna has a backup plan, and a backup-backup plan, so she asks Ectra's statue for a manual. It turns out the statue is Aurora Starspark, a skywatching gnome, who was tortured by the calamari and turned into her library slave. Free now, she is destroying books until Donna asks, if, since she's already dead but possessing her soul still, might she consider entering the mirror, to allow Delilah out, and from which Tessa can extract her. She agrees, but she is immobile. There is a solution, magic, and Ashlee's basket-weaving skills. The Mourner weaves together two wicker legs for the statue, then uses her stone shape spell to turn the column into those legs so that Aurora can move. Supported on both sides by the monster-girls, she takes her first steps and then saves Delilah.

Tessa has been watching and listening, while the plan takes shape. She hmmms, and pokes the mirror with one fingertip; along the side, where it's safe.

"Well, I dunno if it'll work," she muses. "But it's worth a try and you all went ahead and got yourselves, well, bleeding and whatnot. So I suppose it probably can't hurt to try? I don't really know much about this mirror. Strange magical portals aren't my thing, and... Ectra hid her assets well."

"I don't know that it will work, it just might." Ashlee explains. Her Khopesh is silvered, making its edge soft, so it's hard to cut herself on it. She has to press and drag her arm with a little force. Sadly in the fight she was burned and electrocuted, but wasn't cut. Which is a good thing, as Elyanna was trying to do that, and it would have been bad.

Successfull, finally, she bleeds on the blade and draws a little symbol of Vardama with her blood. "It's easy to trip people, hook them with the back of the curve. Get it under an arm, we could pull Delilah out. I hope."

"Worse comes to worst," Donna says, "I'll haul the damn mirror back myself. But if this don't work... Maybe now the library's clear o' souls, we can give it a better lookin' over?"

Elyanna nods, "I expect Lerethil had some means to ferry back her plunder. We can probably use that, if this doesn't work." she replies. She looks to the Mourner, considers the blade, then steps aside to let her at the mirror to the fullest extent she may need."

"The lab isn't entirely clear of souls," Tessa points out. "But it's clear of anyone hostile. Now that Ectra is finally and... properly dead, even her statue is starting to wake up to what's happened to it, and the soul inside will be screaming for release soon. At which point, I will help." She sighs softly, and shakes her head. "This is why Ectra was indulged for so long."

Inside the mirror, Delilah remains unconscious, for the moment at least. The sharp-eyed will notice her chest rise and fall with slow regularity, so at least she is, in fact, still alive. But it appears that aside from that, she isn't likely to be much help.

Ashlee nods, the explanation makes sense. She turns the blade carefully in her hand, looking at her reflection. "We met her so we'd understand. Vardama needed us here to free everyone."

She is her goddess' hand, if a much smaller one than Tessa. Perhaps she can be her goddess' fishook too.

Wait, that's a terrible analogy.

The Mourner carefully steps up to the mirror, touches the holy symbol on her breastplate, and uses the last gift of divine energy today to channel the Feiu of the Tear's presence as she carefully taps the point of her Khopesh against the glass, then attempts to reach through it to hook Delilah.

As Ashes steps up to the mirror, Donna takes a place behind and to her right, her left hand on the Mourner's shoulder. Perhaps her intent can lend magical assistance. Perhaps she can brace the priestess if the mirror tries to pull her in.

Worse comes to worst, she'll get pulled in with Ash and can punch her way free from the other side. Doors are usually easier to break open in the direction they're meant to swing, right?

The words of Vardama's agent bring a grim nod from the Keeper, "I... expected as much. Thank you." before throwing a rueful look past Tessa to the statue that is only beginning to understand the profound aberration of her fate.

With Ashes's words, she turns her attention back that way and she starts to croon a low, steady cadence without words, one that inspires accuracy and poise and suppresses fear or anxieties without calling upon the vulgar... color of most of her marches. Sometimes, it's just that easy. This isn't one of those times. Pushing the blade up against the mirror makes a loud scraping noise, and leaves a scratch and a bit of a crimson smear on the glass, but otherwise achieves little aside from making said mess. As the glass is scratched, Delilah twitches inside the mirror, and then recoils from the glass as if scalded by it.

But, at least, she's awake now.

The Golden Sorceress feels about around herself, until she orients herself to look back out of the mirror; slowly and unsteady at the knees she rises, until she's standing with her hands up against the glass, looking out.

"Not like that, it seems," Tessa observes. "The mirror is not so easily fooled. But fortunately, Miss Delilah *is* still with us." She pauses, and ahems. "Or at least, still with you. ...*I* knew that already." She looks sideways at the group, and winks. "She's in no danger of needing me to escort her soul. Ectra stopped just short of that. You've got time to figure things out." "Worth a shot," Donna sighs, waving a hand to see if her sister can see *out* of the 'mirror' -- can it really be called a mirror if it's not showing your reflection anymore? -- as well as they can see in. "Guess it's the library next."

"Oi!" she calls across the laboratory, "Mister Statue Person! I know things are seriously fucky right now, an' I appreciate that, but can we come over there without gettin' torched or gassed or nothin', please?"

Ashlee nods, lowering her weapon. She steps back and stares at the mirror. "Feiu of the Tears, let me see magic." She prays, her eyes glow like dots.

She stares, this is her main skill, and carefully examines the mirror from all sides. It was activated very simply, Lerethil stumbled? Perhaps there's something lower. She crouches and checks the frame for buttons or a sigil.

"Are we going to push her through if we figure it out?" She asks in monotone.

Elyanna's hand alights on Ashes's sword arm as it lowers, "It was worth the shot." she says softly. With a look to Donna on Ashes's question, then Tessa.

Hmm.

With Donna's call toward the transfigured statue, her eyes return to that direction for the response.

Delilah presses one hand to the glass, from her side of the mirror; and she even gives a solid push, but she remains well and truly trapped on her side of the glass. When Donna waves, she lifts a hand to wave back; so, it would seem, she can indeed see out. She presses her hands against the glass once again, and leans forwards, as it by willing for her escape that she might get it.

She doesn't. Instead, she takes a step back, and looks around herself, before turning her gaze back to her companions. 'I'm okay' she signs to her sister, and anyone else who might know sign language. 'Hurt all over but I'm okay. Still stuck. Cold in here. Also I'm thirsty. Got any wine?'

The statue, meanwhile, has opinions. "That's MISSES!" shouts back the statue, "My name is Aurora Starspark, if you please! And I'm supposed to be a GNOME, not a bloody great giant of a statue! I LIKED BEING THREE FEET TALL. And you killed the self-important mother fucking squid-bitchwaffle that's kept me mind controlled and stuck in this shit for LITERALLY DECADES so as far as I'm concerned you can come right over here and set fire to every last thing she owns!"

For emphasis, the statue seizes a rather expensive looking book and, with a wordless scream, rips it in half and flings one half over the bridge to land on the floor, and the other half into the void. "FUCK YOU!" She yells, waving her fists in the air.

"...Oh dead," remarks Tessa. "She's... going to need some help."

"Okay I got the statue," Donna says, signing a hurried 'Need to save library to save you, BRB' and launches herself across the bridge, approaching the statue with her hands up. "Sorry 'bout that. Aurora. Was hard to see through alla gas an' zombies an' magic an' shit. Just... We need t'save my sister, she's trapped. An' we don't know what in this library's gonna get her out."

A meaningful look is cast toward the half of the book. "Wouldn't happen to know where t'find the manual on that mirror?"

Sometimes, the most expedient method is to simply ask someone who might know more than you do. It's a concept Elyanna's employed from time to time.

Sometimes, she asks pretty hard.

Her attention remains on the interaction between the two, hesitantly stepping after with a look back to Ashes as she fiddles with the mirror, "Perhaps she had some trinket able to interact with the magic in the mirror."

With that concept in mind, she approaches the merchant with intent to search her most thoroughly, in case anything was missed.

"Instructions would help." Ashlee says, and glances at Tessa, her eyes drift towards Lerethil then return to the psychopomp, "I can speak with the Dead. That's four questions. If we don't find a book."

The statue grabs hold of another book and raises it high over her head, and is about to throw it hard towards where the laboratory is burning, when she stops, looks Donna up and down, and slowly lowers the book. And then unceremoniously drops it on the floor at her feet. "...Yeah okay, I guess I owe you that much at least," she replies. "Also, I'm sorry about casting fire at you, and all the... all the other things. I hope 'The Evil Calamari Fucknoodle Made Me Do It' suffices as an excuse." She pauses, and sighs audibly. "In case it doesn't, yes, let me provide a peace offering."

While the statue is busy looking, Tessa excuses herself to approach Poppy and Amelia, whom she ushers off to the side for a hushed chat, about something largely indiscernible.

"AH HA!" pronounces the statue, and provides a thick tome, that she tosses in Donna's direction. "Page four hundred and ten is what you want. Make sure to skip past pages two hundred to three hundred and twenty-nine entirely, it's all about using magic to torture people, and there are diagrams." She pauses, and ahems softly. "Also, when you're done, I'd appreciate it if you burned every fucking WORD of this."

As for the mirror and Ashes' examination of it, it most certainly is magical; the entire apparatus lights up, and practically oozes with magic. There's another quality to it; something distinctly dark and sinister; perhaps not unexpected, given who's laboratory it resides within.

"That's what I call magic." Ashes says, recoiling from the mirror. She nods at the advice, burn it all, skip most of the book. "You were an annoying and effective caster, Aurora, and the slug did a lot of unforgivable things, but I forgive you."

The ashen Arvec heads over to the tome. She opens it at the back and walks forward, to skip the torture section. She manages to avoid glancing towards Elyanna.

How much of what is in those pages would she know? This does not have to be revealed. She might not even be professionally curious. Hopefully not.

Now Ashlee is wondering if she'd look at a necromancy text, just to understand. Umm... "Looking for page four hundred ten."

Elyanna's experiences are more mundane, though, by and large, rather effective, to her continuing regret.

She was clever, and it was enough.

The Keeper's rifling ends as there comes the distinct sound of the manual being found. There is a look up to her countryman as she replies to the Statue and she nods before turning that way, "As do I."

She shrugs and pushes herself to her feet, unaware of Ashlee's concerns about her curiosities, but advises, "Perhaps start from the end and move back."

Easy.

Avoid temptation.

Peering over Ashes' shoulder, Donna scans the relevant pages as well. "If it's all the same t'you," Donna murmurs, "I tend t'find that when folk talk about 'what man was not meant to know,' half the time it's cos man don't sleep so good at night after understandin' a thing or two they didn't know before. Now, what we got here..."

There are many times that Donna is easy to dismiss as the less studious of the twins, and that suits her just fine. But Delilah never had much patience for spell theory, and as a child Donna found herself paying the bulk of the attention, if only to help her sister progress faster.

The back of the book is, perhaps, even worse that torture; it discusses the various methods for the creation of undead, and for trapping souls within gems, or other more... fragile vessels. It also covers the creation of phylacteries, the particulars of lichdom, and has multiple notes scrawled into the margins, most of which seem to deal with subverting Vardama's will.

Page four hundred and ten, however, does indeed discuss the mirror at length. It has detailed diagrams, instructions for what materials to use to build one (including how it can be made simpler by simply sacrificing a conscious, breathing sentient, preferably one of magical persuasion). It details the rituals involved in its creation, and it is extremely clear about one thing; once both sides of the mirror have been decided upon, they cannot be changed. One being in possession of a soul may cross from one side to the other, but then another being must, from that side, cross back. It is the possession of the soul that is important; golems, for example, may not and cannot pass. On the issue of having to alternate directions, however, it is quite clear; there are no exceptions.

"Does that shit help?" inquires Aurora. "Seriously, after the last I'unno how many fucking decades I've been standing exactly *right here* waiting for her highness wanna-be lich-bitch to come back, I will do *anything* I possibly can to tear down everything she ever built." She pauses, looking over towards Ashes and Elyanna, and her feathers un-ruffle, just a little bit. "And, thank you. I was... Yeah. I couldn't help it. I'm glad you're not seriously hurt, and thank you for freeing me."

Ashlee does not share the revenge-neutralization plan she had for the statue. Tessa's arrival prevented mistakes being made. She'll use stone shape for something else. "Um, it helps a little."

The Mourner is trying to forget the pages of very useful Necromancy instructions. Well now she knows.

"One soul possessing being in, one soul possessing being out. It's clear." Her brow furrows, "Although, it must be her phylactery too? Otherwise Veren somehow killed her soul-less body in her bed."

The mourner isn't surprised Ectra could squid about without a soul, if that's the case.

"...Yeah it does," Donna sighs, frowning in thought. Chewing on the inside of her cheek, she raises her head to look to Tessa. "Hey, uh... *is* the other side of that mirror the Grey Halls? Cos... we got us a wrinkle here, an' answerin' that'll give us options."

The red woman's arms fold and she nods toward the transfigured gnome, "You are welcome. We have..." a guilty look to Ashes, "Been forced to act against out will, before. We understand."

The abridged excerpt from the tome gives her the same comfort as a bed of nails soaked in Zhrragh.

Take our word for it.

"What of the circlet? Is it... empty, now?" she wonders.

"Yes." It is not Tessa who answers, but Amelia, walking back towards the group without any of the difficulties that her advanced age might suggest; apparently being, well, dead has at least some benefits. "Yes, that mirror is a passageway to the Grey Halls. It was one of several contingencies that Ectra built; ways to return if something... unfortunate for her happened. It is an extremely evil way to reach the Halls, but..." The old woman sighs audibly.

"If you're asking me how to defeat it, I don't know the answer to that. I know, in the book it says there are no exceptions. But that is Ectra's book, and she was full of herself. There are always flaws. *always*. Even the gods make mistakes, just, don't tell them that to their faces."

"I remember the circlet," pipes up Poppy. "That was Veren's work, not Ectra's. She made it to make sure Ectra couldn't mind-control /her/." She pauses, and purses her lips. "I don't know if it worked or not, but... I suppose it did."

"Well, I still have the branch from the Grey Halls," Ashlee says, reaching for her satchel. The conversation knocking her out of ruminations about the magic jar spell, possible ways to give Poppy a ride.

Or taking the Mirror to Alexandria and setting it up as a fun-house type attraction, where people could hop in and out. Which would work great until things closed down for the night. Or the circus had to travel.

"She appealed to Ectra's ego, she wouldn't question an affectation she enjoyed." Another nod, "Smart."

"Could Mahuikaa manage a back door? Or Tessa? If it connects somehow..." Well it connects somehow.

"...I gotta 'nother idea," Donna says faintly, "but it ain't a choice as I can make."

Turning to Aurora, Donna steps close, raising her hands to shoulder level to signify peace. "...So there's only one way t'get my sister out, right now, an' that's if somethin' with a soul wants t'walk on in. Now Tessa, there, she's a friend, an' she was gonna be takin' you to th' Grey Halls anyway, but... My sister's trapped in there, right now, so... I ain't holdin' nothin' against you, I'm just askin' the biggest favor I ever asked of anyone before, Aurora."

"Will you help us save my sister?"

The Keeper's question answered, though from another vector entirely, she turns toward Amelia as she approaches the group.

Her eyes consider the apparition another life wasted and held captive over decades.

Her mind retreats from that rabbit hole, it's not one she'd be crawling out of any time soon.

The Hobkin nods grimly, "You speak truly." because what else can she say...

A pause, as Donna begins her entreaty, and slowly, the red woman turns to regard the transaction, a veiled conflict in her eyes.

Aurora looks down, then over towards the mirror, then back to Donna, fixing her gaze on the brawler and clasping her hands in front of her. "I..." She stops, and looks to Tessa, then Amelia and Poppy. "Well..." She looks towards the tables in the laboratory, and points towards one of them. "I'm... Y'know, I'm sure at least one of you is thinking about trying to bring me back to life, but... Honestly, I don't think you can, and even if you could, I stood here and watched Ectra dissect my body over there. That's a memory I don't want to live with. I'd rather find out what's in the Grey Halls." She pauses, and looks back up to Tessa. "Your a psychopomp, right? Before I wound up in here I used to love looking up at the starts. Are there stars, in the Grey Halls?"

"There are," replies Tessa, speaking softly. "You can see them all."

The statue falls silent for a long moment, and then bobs her head. "Then... yes. I will do that for you, since all of you have saved me. As much as I can be saved, anyway." She points downwards, "But, I'll need feet, instead of a plinth."

"I would have understood," Donna says quietly, "if you'd said no. I know what I'm askin'. An' thank you. I ain't *never* gonna forget the name Aurora Starspark, an' that's a promise." Reaching up, she squeezes the marble arm of the statue, takes in a deep breath, and turns. "Okay so we got a movin' job to do."

<OOC> Ashes stares, "Oh, I have the best pose. I'm going to use craft/basketweaving to save the world."

"I have an idea." Ashlee says, raising her hands, "Feiu of the... wait. I have a better idea."

The ashen Arvec looks around, finding some reeds and reed-like strips in the laboratory. Who knows what they were for - twisted necromantic uses, no doubt. She sits down, legs crossed and starts working, weaving something together.

She did a lot of weaving for Nan Mochtrath, baskets and... baskets mostly. A few boxes with lids. Bowls. Sometimes she'd weave nests for the birds outside.

She had a lot of time to kill, waiting to grow big enough to be a vessel for someone else.

At first it's an odd oblong bowl, then it closes, more like a vase. It takes further shape and becomes a foot. A calf, a knee, a thigh, all to hobgoblin proportions, she measures them against her own. The left is finished, then the right.

She stands, holding them up proudly, "Aurora Starspark, you'll walk to your reward."

Ashlee moves closer, touches her holy symbol, "Feiu of the Tears, let me shape the stone."

And she does, pressing the basket forms into the column and using them as the frame to form it into two legs. Not ill formed ones at that.

She keeps her hand on the statue's shoulder, using the lingering magic to help them animate. She's only steadying Aurora, first steps might need that.

It's not an easy thing to ask, she imagines, but understands the reasoning for Donna's decision.

Elyanna nods, expression grave, but she bows, closing her eyes as Aurora acquiesces.

"We will send word to your people, madame. That your soul is free, as it should be." she offers politely.

Ashe's craft time, in due course brings itself to her attention and she finds herself unable to turn away for morbid curiosity, though, further, with the full manifestation of her new miracle.

Those first steps are difficult, which is plain to see, and, unbidden, she moves to the other side to offer her own support.

Tessa stands back with Amelia and Poppy, and the Psychopomp and souls watch as Ashes works; so to does Aurora, wringing her hands with great concern, until the meaning of Ashes' work is made clear. And when a smooth block of stone becomes feet, the statue indeed stumbles; and even with the combined efforts of Ashes and Elyanna, she's still a full sized stone statue, and goes directly down to a knee, wearing an expression that would surely be flooded with tears were she able.

"Thank you," she whispers, as she brings herself carefully back upright. "I haven't... I've been stuck there for decades, watching Ectra perform her foulness. Now I can walk free... you could have given me no greater gift. My people wander mostly in the Desolation, but we go as far as Alexandria for supplies, just... ask the Gnome merchants if they've seen Old Blaster, they'll know who I'm talking about."

Aurora pauses, and pulls one small, unassuming book off the shelf, where it was almost invisible among the other tomes. "Please give him this," she murmurs, offering the book to the two helping her. "It was... my journal, with my observations. Ectra kept it. Tell my people... Tell them I found it. A new star. I *found it*. And I called it Winterheart."

With the books passed on, Aurora takes her first step; and she's unsteady at first, but by the time she's crossed the bridge she'd moving more confidently. She glances towards Donna as she passes the brawler, and bobs her head. Before long, she's reached the mirror, where she pauses, looking at her reflection with Delilah behind it, looking back.

Aurora looks over her shoulder, and smiles at the group. "Don't look at this as a sacrifice," she states. "It's better this way. Ectra murdered me a long time ago, and you've all saved me. That I can save one of you... well. I'm grateful."

As she turns to the mirror, she puts her hands out, pushing them through the glass and stepping through. As she does the statue cracks and shatters, crumbling to pieces that land some outside the mirror, and some in; and as the dust settles there is, standing before Delilah in the mirror, a short, dark skinned woman, no more than three feet tall. Delilah kneels, and gathers Aurora up in her arms; and for a moment the two embrace, before Delilah stands up once more, and the two inside the mirror step around each other. They look at one another, and a few words are spoken; Aurora smiles, and gives everyone outside the mirror a little wave before she turns to wander off.

Delilah puts her hands to the mirror herself, from inside; the glass ripples around her and she bursts back through, gasping loudly as she falls through the other side and stumbles, landing on her knees and coughing. "Oh Gods," she gasps. "*Gods*."
