Wizard's First Rule
You stand before a gentleman, one of the higher ranking officials of the Adventurer's guild. His nameplate says 'Personal Allocation Marcus' and you can't imagine that the huge scarred guy behind the desk stole his seat. Nor can you really fathom him sitting behind it. It's a tiny desk and a tiny chair and he's standing behind them both with one hand casually draped over the back of the chair. He looks very serious. "You have an unavailable job. You see this magazine known as Better Homes and Dungeons apparently got ahold of some potions that lead to what we believe to be a location tied to the White Tower. You all are going to head to the location that these potions were gathered from."
Marcus frowns heavily and it's a frown worth writing home about. You wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of that frown and clearly /someone/ is. "A bunch of so-called adventurers went in there and someone pocketed a few, brought them back and sold them. Or that's our best guess anyway. Either way you take this map and check the place out. Hopefully it's not the White Tower itself, but as it could be related we're urging caution and are only accepting people like yourselves who've proven themselves on this mission. Good luck. You'll probably need it."
"Likely we'll need it," Iolaire says, clacking her beak as she takes the map. "No fear though, sir. With luck we'll return only lightly singed."
The officer, and his choice of venue, is very, very carefully not remarked upon. One learns quickly that it does not do to call attention to an officer in a state of mismatch.
There are reasons armies don't employ otyughs.
Mikilos frowns thoughtfully. "Can you tell us anything useful about previous encounters with this location? And I'd recommend strong caution with those potions. I'd lay odds they're infected with the Plague."
Morgan eyes widen when the name white tower is said "Well today will be a busy one." the half elf says as this is a mages dream. "But I know there will be Golems there and I so hate them."
Erendriel looks at Marcus, and smiles the smile of familiarity. HAnds gripping her backpack straps, and listening carefully , before turning to the group. "Golems? Are those... hard to burn?" Verna considers the information provided and states her interpretation, perhaps for confirmation or clarification, all carried from her hood with a long breath that could well be a sigh. "So, either a publication is luring potentially ignorant, incompetent, or unqualified individuals to their doom... or a similar group, through naught more than unlikely happenstance or whim of fate stumbled upon this potentially potent information?" A pause to refill her lungs. "Should the location prove meaningful, you can trust that any discoveries made shall be properly analyzed and catalogued."
".....Moderately singed," Iolaire amends, glancing askance at Erendriel.
"All I know is that some bunch of very renowned Adventurers /drank/ the potions and were transported to a tower. Their report however was very lacking in details. So we've sent a second batch of various individuals who will hopefully actually report back. Given that they survive." Marcus rolls his shoulders like a pair of boulders rolling down a hill. "The group that investigated the place we're sending you didn't report to us at all. The only thing we know about it is that a group went there."
He fosts the map off onto you and really he knows nothing else so you're on your way. A few hours later find you barely outside of Alexandria. There's no sign of a /tower/ so to say, but you do find an odd doorway sitting in the side of a rocky outcropping. Boulders and large rocks surround the door, but the door itself is clear. On the door there are a few simple words written in the language that you spoke as a child. ‘Speak my name and enter.’
Mikilos glances to Eren. "Depends on the golem. Some are highly resistant, others quite flammable. Most are pretty magic resistant." upon arriving at the location, the elf eyes the door with a mild frown. Who's name?

Travel, specifically land travel, is Verna's least desirable part of any task. Much of the time is spent reading, until they near, and the tome is well-stowed when the doorway comes into full view and the symbols discernible. "Fascinating... and one might infer the name sought is most likely that of the creator."
Erendriel squints and looks at the the writing, then back to the others. "Um, are there any.. names on the map or something?

Morgan looks at the door and is pissed as a word is on the tip of her tounge. "Fuck it starts with a Z." Not remembering things does piss off a lore master.
Mikilos says, "...The wizard Zehier."
As you think and mull over the name, Mikilos' utterance causes the door to open slowly. Rocks shift and tumble to either side. When it's done moving the door leads from what you can see into a huge round room with a high vaulted ceiling... that wouldn't actually fit above the rockslide that the tower is surrounded by. In other words... it's bigger on the inside (as someone famous once said). There's a huge magical circle inscribed on the floor, and a staircase that winds... upwards around the tower up high enough that it comes back around to the door and disappears to your sight.

Morgan was about to swear that she could not recall the name. But her attention shifts as she looks to the rocks. "Um some one was here not long ago." She points to some rocks. "The moss right here is damaged and this area has none at all."

Mikilos frowns mildly, nodding at Morgan's information. "I'd say chances are high this is the White Tower... meaning there's likely a powerful vampire and a demon lord, among whatever other defenses are present."
"In that case," Iolaire pipes up as Morgan points out the moss, "best to stay behind me until we're rather certain the area's clear."
Then Mikilos speaks of vampires, and her beak falls open in something like a grin. "Vampires? Well, that'll be fun. I've been meaning to give this a test."
And she unhitches the long haft from her belt, allowing the head-sized weight to fall to the ground at the end of its chain. "Shall we, then?"
Extra-dimensional spaces, teleportation, or other spatial manipulations are hardly unexpected. The obvious magic circle is studied, though Verna's next target will be the stairs, if only due to their presence and less conspicuous, insofar as magic is concerned, nature. "If this is that tower, advising caution is a somewhat foregone conclusion." Her hood then dips to Iolaire."We shall."
Erendriel is careful, squatting down, getting on her toes, looking around for anything suspicious. "I've been practicing looking for dangers, let me see..." she says as the place opens up. "Not seeing anything," she says, standing back up. "And I'll stand behind anyone I'm allowed to stand behind, on general principles."

With as close to an 'all clear' as he's likely to get, Mikilos heads inside cautiously, wanting a closer look at that magical circle.

As you all enter the room. Some of you to look over the magical circle that dominates the floor you're all standing on, Verna heads over to check out the stairs. Suddenly, there's a massive explosion. It rocks the tower somewhat and as you all look over to the staircase you see that Verna was the center of it... And that the door to the tower is now closed.
Even magical explosions have warning signs, and Iolaire was already diving away from the incipient fireball gathering at Verna's feet when her conscious mind caught up to the warning. Curling up into a ball facing toward the blast, and stretching her wings out away from it, she rides out the explosion with an inward mental sigh.
When silence reigns again, the armored Egalrin lifts her head, blinking in Verna's direction. "...Moderately singed?"

Fortunately, gray does not show scorch marks well. As wisps of smoke still rise from her attire, and the flesh beneath, Verna coughs once before noting. "Someone prepared Exploding Runes this morning..." The dry in her voice could be partly due to the now lack of water vapor in the air in her immediate vicinity. "On a related note, the stairs in this section may now be less hazardous."
Morgan sighs as she utters a few arcane words and lifts off the ground "Runes lovely.... Any one here with arcane sight up?" she asks the group wondering if its a smart idea to cast detect magic.
Erendriel looks up and starts at the explosion. "This is serious..." she murmurs. "Might it be safer to walk up the wall instead of going up the stairs? I wonder."
GAME: Morgan casts Overland Flight. Caster Level: 11 DC: 22
"Not on me," Iolaire notes, climbing back to her feet. "Though I'd suggest that perhaps you ask me to poke a stick at anything you intend to take a close look at? That *is* why I joined this expedition, after all... Sheet mithral tends to burn less well than scholars."
With that, she shifts back to Verna's side. "Truly though, are you all right?"
Mikilos considers. "...runes explode when you -read- them... don't read them, no explosion? So, -if-, they were magically hidden, they'd be safe to a casual passerby?"
Mikilos says, "Also, with that explosion, fairly sure they know we're here."

Verna lifts a hand to assure Iolaire before gesturing with the same in beseeching of aid from her Matron in the form of repair to her person. "I am well enough, thank you." Her tone is not dry as before.

Mikilos blinks, blinks again, frowning at the magical circle. "...I'm not sure what the whole thing does. But this part, looks to be a trap door. Looks like could get it open without too much effort."

"Perhaps the challenge is that we must go down to go up?" Verna suggests as most of her wounds mend, given the presence of the trap door. "I do not expect any travel in this tower to be straightforward nor direct."
"All right," Iolaire says, gently patting Verna's shoulder. Talk of a trapdoor catches her attention, and her head tilts to one side. "That rather does make as much sense as nearly anything would," she admits, slinging the heavy weight at the end of her flail over one shoulder and moving to crouch next to the aforementioned door. Magic she may not know, but doors she can at least open.
Morgan agreas with Verna "Well I know this place can mess with time as I said before I am a week older then I should be." she then says "But the last time I was here I went in the trap door and we encountered a stone golem."
Mikilos nods, and shrugs. "Do we really -want- to go up? Storage facilities and bolt holes tend to be in basements. If we can find Kol's lair and destroy him for good, I'll consider this a success, whatever else happens."
Erendriel pipes up "Be careful with what you assume. Are we sure up is even... up? I mean, this place isn't the size of what we see outside. What if it's... reversed or something?"
Iolaire casually opens the trap door, peeling it upwards so that it rocks backwards on a hidden hinge. There's no sign of stairs here. Just a dead drop. Down. Into the dark. Because there's no sign of light down there at all. Just pitch black beneath the stone that she's holding up. No telling how far down it is in there, or /what's/ down there.
Verna's hood dips. "Indeed. Direction could be quite subjective. Be wary. As well, should we encounter automatons, I strongly suggest that we focus our energies on more indirect methods, such as empowering and defending those who can take direct physical action." She steps forward to glance down the opening. "That is not especially welcoming."
"Perhaps not," Iolaire murmurs. Unslinging her flail, she whistles a short, three-tone sequence, and the weapon's head-sized weight flares alight like a tiny sun. Bracing a foot against the opposite end of the opening, she lowers the weapon in. "If I do slip, it's at least likely I don't have to hit the ground... So, let's see what we can see.”
Morgan asks to Iolaire "Would you like to fly for the next few hours?"
Erendriel looks around to the tohers. "Should we try to um, light that up? Or would that be asking for trouble too much?"
"Already can," the armored bird replies, peering down after her lit weapon.
The lowered light does provide you with some insight into what you have to look forward to. There's a stone floor a short distance below you. Other than that the light doesn't provide much. You're looking from above at a five foot square in the ground. So the floor is what you have as reference
"Looks safe enough," the bird says after a moment. "Welp. If you don't hear a crunch, come on after!" And with that cheerful sentiment, she drops into the hole.
"At least the drop is short." Verna gestures to the opening and offers to Iolaire. "After... you." She shall await a sound of impact that is more pleasant than a crunch before stepping into the breach to float downwards.
Mikilos shrugs, and hops in after being fairly sure Iolaire has moved out of the way. "To be fair, would follow even if there was a crunch. Just follow a little more combat prepared."
Erendriel sighs when she sees her precious climbing won't work, and just goes in after Mikilos.
Morgan says to Mikilos "We would need part of her and her gear to pay for the spell to bring her back." she is ready to follow the others as they move on.
Below, as you gather into the darkness now lit up by the bright light of Iolaire's weapon, you find yourselves in a large room. There are several metal tables with what look like human bodies beneath sheets laid out upon them. The light seems... too bright in here, particularly given that as Iolaire herself finishes her decent a low light begins to shine from the ceiling providing a moderate but less glaring light than that provided by Iolaire's weapon. By the time the last person has descended the light has finished turning on entirely.
To your right lies a door and a wall which divides this round room in half, and before you in a niche in the wall is a metal figure. A metal man tucked into the wall standing there like a suit of armor. Other than those things, the room is empty.
Mikilos sighs, frowning at.... just about everything. "So... do the bodies rise up first, or does the golem attack? I mean, maybe they're fully dead and the golem is an assistant, but..."
"Monitor the armor," Verna notes, gesturing to what could be decoration, tool, or automaton, as she moves to study the alleged corpses.
Morgan looks to the metal man and says to Mikilos. "Well lets hope the bodys are not a ruse for the ghosts that were attached to them." She is annoyed by this but then she really hates golems.

Erendriel does her thing, carefully looking around, biting her lip. Carefully, tentatively approaching the armor, she looks at it, and sizes it up. "Mikilos was right. This is... not just a decoration. And something might be able to turn it on somehow. If I'm lucky I might be able to disable it somehow... unless someone else is better at trying such a thing."
As Erendriel approaches the armor, Iolaire seems to decide that if her job is to take a hit for someone, best stand next to the most likely one to be hurt. "And if you're not lucky," she says, amusement flashing in her eyes, "be swift at least."
Mikilos is somewhat torn, unsure what to investigate first, and so hesitates while other act. Looking to Eren and the metal man, he shrugs. "Fairly sure I can break it. But that's not the same."
Morgan says "I would rather shut it off, mostly to save the spells."
Verna scowls beneath her hood as she studies the remains. "These corpses are marked with a sigil. To what end I am uncertain, but any defacement is likely for ill." At Erendriel's words, her hood pans sharply to the armor for a moment. "Use caution. I will ensure that these will remain as they are, or perhaps with more respite..." She then begins to beseech her matron to provide said respite.
Erendriel looks to the group. "Well, if anyone has any sort of um, spells or prayers that will give me added insight in trying to do this, I'd appreciate the help now."

Mikilos waits for Verna's spell to take hold before moving over to investigate the noted sigils himself. Golems are a bit outside his area, despite the occasional effort.
There is a low creak from the suit of armor, a sliding of metal against metal. Blue lights flicker on in the eye sockets and a low rumbling voice echoes you. "You have disturbed this area. Trespassers shall be exterminated.”
Erendriel lets out a squeak when something goes wrong. "Uh..." she stammers, as she starts backing away, making a break for it to get as far away as she can, as fast as she can.

"Time to earn your purse," Iolaire sighs as Erendrial scrabbles away, pivoting in a complete circle on one foot, the warrior slings her weapon into the golem's body with an almost bell-like sound, followed by the crackling of electricity as her weapon's enchantments lend their own bite to her strike.

Morgan says as she keeps far away as she can but not backed to the wall "Well its not a normal Iron golem that I never seen before, so I have no idea." the lore master is stumped again.

The thing steps forward just slightly, and punches Iolaire twice like a professional boxer just laying into her. The sound is... unpleasant, and so too is the splatter of blood it leaves behind both where the golem hit her and where it's now marked on its hands. Oddly you notice somehow as its fists draw back that it isn't splattered with blood anywhere else.

"It is not yet our time for Your judgement, so grant us aid against those who defile your ordered designs..." Verna once more beseeches aid from her matron, now for all of the righteous present. She then takes a moment for further study of the now-animated creation. "This wrestched thing appears in a terrible state: not mindless, yet its will is bound. The arc quickens it..." her hood snaps to Erendriel, "and fire will only mend it. It is likely immune to any spells which can be resisted."

Mikilos frowns mildly at the golem, and Verna's news about it, and keeps back, swiftly writing a series of glowing runes in the air, where a door starts to form, and a gruff voice sounds.
"Yeah?"
"Hey Frank, Mikilos. Have a golem problem."
"Yeah, okay, be there in a sec."
Erendriel frowns mightily at Verna's words. Not at Verna, what she says. "Fine," she says with all the indignation of the known universe, as she points at the Golem, and mutters magic words to make it, hopefully, harder for the thing to walk.

The punches to the beak do send Iolaire reeling briefly, and she utters a low hiss upon seeing that her enchantment gave the construct a boost. But annoyance turns to glee as support magic goes off, the golem goes down, and advice is doled out. "Eeeeexcellent..."
Another turn, and the tiny sun slams twice upon the prone golem with spell-assisted speed.

Morgan gets a idea and sends a ray of coldness "Well I doubt that slowed it down like it does on other golems.... I hate golems." she backs up wishing she could help better

The golem slowly stands back up and throws another punch at Iolaire, connecting once again. Just one hit this time, but they're slowly wearing away at one another.

Verna would prefer to continue to aid Iolaire from afar, but the she would be much less useful if the other were reduced to a mass of bloody feathers in the interim. She steps near the avian assaulter and catches a glancing blow from the golem even as she places a healing hand upon Iolaire. "So long as you can continue to deter it, I will continue to enable you to continue."

Erendriel isn't really sure of what to do. The grease is well and good, the slip of the golem having made her giggle. But.. what now? She gulps, frowns, and points at the Golem. But her reluctance to use ice shows, and she hits the wall behind instead.
The floating runes shift to a door, and through the magical doorway comes a large sword. This is swiftly followed by a large man with the head of a wolf, takes a moment to look around the place. "...you always call me to the strangest places..." Focusing on the obvious golem, the Hound attacks, blade whistling as clawed feet grip the floor firmly, but fail to connect.
Mikilos nods, drawing his own blade. "I owe you a pint, at least." The blade magically flies from the wizard's hand, clanging against the golem's defenses.

"My thanks," Iolaire says shortly as the battle continues -- taking punches from a creature that vastly outmasses you tends to keep the attention riveted -- and when the next three strikes fail to connect appreciably, the bloodied warrior begins to look concerned.

Like the automaton that it is the golem keeps on attacking Iolaire, ignoring all others in favor of bringing her down. It doesn't even seem to realize that there is a new person attacking it... yet.

Mikilos and Frank continue their bladed efforts to pierce the golem's defenses. It's not going so great.

Verna scowls (more) as the sudden beam of gray light that briefly splashes the construct does not distract nor detract from its blows. Perhaps due to a lack of eyes. "May I aid you to balance the scales, with Her blessing," she utters, to both Iolaire and her matron, linking herself to the former by the grace of the latter, without need of gesture that would leave her vulnerable.
Erendriel scrunches up her face and tries again, pointing menacingly at the golem and sending out the most pitiful little chilly ray at the thing. "Should I grease it again?" she calls out, hopefully.

"I don't suppose," Iolaire says as she spits out some blood and a shard of beak, "that we *have* to fight this creature? If anyone can find a way out of this room, perhaps it'll be satisfied so long as we're no longer 'disturbing this room'?" As she speaks, she sweeps low to knock the golem's legs out from under it, following up with a hard overhand smash.
With that final blow the golem stays down.

The resulting sound of rending metal is rather reassuring, and Verna exhales a sigh, though this time with some relief. "Fortunately, we now have the opportunity to remain unmolested for the moment. Are you alright?" she inquires of Iolaire, though perhaps more for comfort than evaluation as she seems to have been monitoring her condition.
"OKAY," Iolaire says through heavy, panted breaths as she lowers herself to one knee before the stilled golem. "That was fun. ...Fun? Fun. Sure." Glancing up at Verna, the warrior nods. "Rather more bruised and battered than I like, but still in most of one piece, thank you."
The celestial Hound nods to Iolaire as she finishes the golem off. "Good job. Golems are tough." Nodding to the others, he heads back to the magic door, glancing to Mikilos. "Remember, you sill owe me a couple pints."
The mage nods with a laugh, then sighs, putting his blade away. Looking to Verna, he says "Before we got interrupted, those snowflake scars on the bodies are an Arcane Mark, made by the one who runs this place." The elf pushes up the sleeve of his robe, where a palm sized scar has been carved into his own flesh.
Morgan gets a potion from her belt and says to Iolaire, "Its not much but this can help with healing if you still need some?" She offers the potion if it is needed.
Erendriel sighs and shakes her head. "Sorry. I tried.... it would have been nice if it worked. But... it probably would have attacked us anyway."
Verna nods to Iolaire before turning to offer the same to Mikilos. "If the intent is to raise them, they will remain at peace for the better part of the day under the Lady's watchful eye. We should resume our investigation of the room, to prefreably include a means of egress." To Erendriel, she notes, "Such creations are designed to thwart magic and weapon alike, though magic most heavily."
"You'll not find me ungrateful for trying, dear," Iolaire says around a chuckle, bobbing her head in thanks as the potion is offered. "You are indeed a peach, thank you." Taking the vial, the Egalrin stabs away the stopper, and tips her head back to swallow the potion in one breath.

Mikilos nods to Eren. "You tried. All anyone can ask. As for the bodies... I don't know." Less pressed for action, the wizard takes some time to examine one a little more closely.
Morgan takes back the empty bottle as its useful for other things. She makes her way to Mikilos to help him to check over the bodies.
