  • Title: I Beg Your Pudding?
  • Emitter: Iadoth
  • Characters: Kore (L6); Bors (L9)
  • Place: Alexandria - a pig farm in the hills
  • Time: April 21, 2018 8:30pm BST
  • Summary: There's a funny rumour going around about a bad smell around a farm on the far side of Alexandros. Of course you'll come and help. That's a given.
  • APL: 6.5 ((6+9)/2-1)
  • Encounter 1: CR 9.5 - Giant Hill Giant (CR 8), 2x Young Young Black Pudding (CR 5)

A rumour has been going round in Alexandria of a farm on the far edge of the state where a very unusual odour has been detected. Sure, it's a pig farm, but this unusual odour isn't pigs, and it's been getting stronger. "...Bodies?" Kore tilts her head slightly and then takes a deep breath, sighing as she does. "Let's search the premises and see what we can find. Does anyone have a solid suggestion for where to begin when we are there...?" Bors has an odor about himself, as well, though it's generally fish, and since he works on fishing boats, it's not unusual. It is a bit unpleasant, but it takes all kinds. He will, however, go out and investigate this pig farm, because the explorers' guild pays gold for this sort of thing, and gold lets him buy useful things. Lately, it's been getting reinvested into his adventuring habit, but if he banks it, he should be able to live well. He offers Kore a shrug about where to begin. The journey is a little convoluted, but at a day's length, offers the pair the opportunity to get to know one another. The Guild has laid upon a coach for the trip, but only oxen, so it is slower than one might hope.

<OOC> Kore says, "RL is being a pain. As soon as I accept, of course, should clear up over the next twenty minutes or so. Let's go search a farm! I can still post and roll and such."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Yes, no worries. I'll move us on."

Bors is OK with oxen. Riding horses is not something he likes, so getting pulled works just fine for him. Getting to know him is a bit tough, as he's not very chatty. He'll respond to direct questions, but he doesn't chat. His accent is Xian, which makes the name he gives, Bors, a generic sort of Myrrish name, sound odd. Kore is happy to walk and be very quiet, as Monks are often wont to do. She dresses in black, not white, but otherwise is quite solemn and always surveying the road. If it gets to be much too long she might ride but not unless it's necessary. The landscape is typically Alexandros --- pastoral, with the occasional small woodland or forded watercourse. Farms as far as the eye can see, and on this clear day, the eye can see pretty far. It isn't long before they're in the north country, where the landscape is more rugged and hilly. Farms here are for sheep, or occasionally, pigs. It's the latter of the two varieties at which Kore and Bors find themselves, late in the evening. The hosts, a farmer Giles and her husband, provide a good square meal and a room for the two, but provide little in the way of explanation. It is true that the smell is unusual, and permeates the farm. It is sweet, like rubbish decaying in the summer sun, but the couple offer nothing further that could be helpful. Bors doesn't ask any questions. Perhaps he assumes that they'd tell him if they knew anything? He will arrive, and eat when supper is served, though not a lot because ugh, that smell. It's pretty bad. He and the monk make a quiet pair, then, not having much to say. Hopefully the hosts aren't too put out. "Thank you for dinner," Kore offers politely, the half-Mul no doubt an unusual dinner guest in any case. "I'd like to take a look around. Especially anywhere that isn't often used...?" She looks between those at the table.

<OOC> Kore says, "Can I roll Know/Nature, maybe? Try to find out what it might be and such."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Of course"
GAME: Kore rolls knowledge/nature: (14)+6: 20
<OOC> Iadoth says, "It's not a success I'm afraid. Would you like to narrate?"

"It's not stinkweed or rotroot. I wish it were, but the smell being so pervasive means it would have to grow under hte house. And it smells wrong for- other things..." Kore had been about to say bodies but he stopped herself as she formed the words on her lips. "I really do need to take a good, long look around. May I be excused from the meal...?" She sighs softly. "The soil looked fine..."

<OOC> Kore says, "Others have stuff they want to do? I should probably wait for more stuff. :)"
<OOC> Kore says, "Might try Detect Evil"
<OOC> Bors has no useful skills

Bors will get up and follow Kore without a word. Not that she needs his help, but it's always best to stick together. And if she does find something, then he'll be right there on the spot.

<OOC> Kore says, "I'll try searching. Perception or Survival? And Detect Evil, because... Why not. You never know when it'll randomly turn stuff up. It's a class ability anyway."
<OOC> Bors has Perception, at least

Farmers Giles and Giles give their accordance and Kore and Bors are excused. The farm itself is not large, and sits in a sort of basin surrounded by hills. The run-off collects, and there is always water in plentiful supply. Mud, too, much to the delight of the pigs. The hills, being nearby, are eerie in the murk of the evening light. The lower surfaces are sandstone and gritstone, whilst peat covers the plateaus of the highlands. Bors wears a hat that looks like a skullcap topped with a silver candle. But the candle emits light, so at least he can see closeby. So Kore starts on the lower ground first, lifting the silver harp which is her holy symbol in front of her to light the way. She'll go so far as to investigate the mud and check in among the pigs. she knows little of the animals, so they are largely left alone so long as they don't match that weirdly pervasive smell tha she is tracking. someitmes the tiny Monk sniffs the air, others she simply walks about in slow, silent steps. The hills come last, but they will also be being checked thoroughly so long as low light vision remains enough to pierce the evening.

<OOC> Kore says, "Do they have a cellar?"

The lower parts of the hills are, as described, sandstone and gritstone crags. Mostly they are slopes from the ground to the highlands, but in places they rise dramatically as cliffs. And where there is water and sandstone, there are caves. Here is no different --- caves extend back from the cliff faces, deep and dark and ominous.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "They do have a cellar."
<OOC> Kore says, "Does the smell stay just as strong approaching the caves? ^^"

As the pair approach one cave in particular, barely visible from the farmland, especially in the fading light, the smell intensifies.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "There's thine answer."

Bors coughs and fans his face as the smell gets stronger in front of one cave. He eyes it suspiciously, and pauses in case Kore wants to check inside. It's as likely as anything, and he can always stab it. "Well, that seems like the answer then." The elf squints as she scans the inside of the chamber. "Are you good at stealth? I'm going to go up ahead. Follow behind if you can be quiet enough, otherwise stay back maybe a hundred feet? That way I can get a look before run into anything." So saying, the Monk is heading into the cave. She doesn't bother with a light source for now. Bors gets a brief nod. Kore's nose twitches but she manages to resist reacting to the smell. Aside from being smelly, the cave is dark. Very dark. It's warm too, with the heat of the underground that doesn't fade quickly with the evening. It's also quiet.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "How are you responding to each of those?"

Bors is not a stealthy person, so he'll stay back. That way his smell won'y alert anyone that he's coming. He also clanks like he's wearing armor, though it doesn't look like he is.

<OOC> Kore says, "Even if it's dark the fact Bors has light is hopefully enough for Kore's lowlight vision. Kore's definitely searching this cave for the source of that smell. She'll move toward the warmth, call it a hunch."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Okey-dokey."

Bors notices something first, because it's easier to spot: An enormous humanoid, carrying a large sack, heading towards the cave mouth. It's doing its best to move slowly and quietly, as presumably it's already aware of you. As it lumbers around a headland in the cliff face, there it is: barely 30 ft. away, and upon you within seconds. Then, Kore notices something: a man-sized, black, amorphous blob glistening darkly in the low light. And if that weren't disturbing enough, then Kore spots another, clinging to the ceiling of the cave.

<OOC> Bors says, "Can we tell what sort of h umanoid? Or what the blobs are?"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "With a successful Knowledge/Local or Knowledge/Dungeoneering, you certainly can."
<OOC> Bors says, "I do not have those. But I'll assume that if I need a roll to identify it at 30 ft, it's not a human."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "It's not a human. It's much, much bigger than that."
<OOC> Kore says, "It's an amorphous blob so I'm going to guess some kind of ooze, but... Beyond that, who knows. No knowledge/local or dugneoneering here."

Kore points toward the oozes, her blue eyes wide as she surveys the eiling. She still hasn't chosen to make any noise, her footsteps careful in the darkness. even if it likely knows where sshe is. Kore squints at the enormous humanoid shape, tryign to make it out more cllearly. "...Can you understand us?" Speaking sometimes works, after all. it might even be friendly. Bors will pull out his kukri knives in case the big humanoid is not friendly. He's frowning aggressively as he waits to see how it responds to Kore, but he's prepared to slice and dice if the need arises. The humanoid grunts loudly, and drops its large sack. A waft of sweet smelling garbage wriggles free and assaults the nostrils. It pulls an enormous tree branch from a baldric across its chest, and brandishes it threateningly in one hand. "Urgh!" It shouts, in a primitive sounding language. "Urgh!" In the cave, a slipping, slicking, sucking kind of sound starts up, moving towards Kore and Bors...

Bors rushes forward at the creature, whatever it is. It's almost certainly bad news, and so he jumps to the conclusion that stabbing it is what is called for. So he rushes in before it can get a read on him, and he slashes his kukri knife across its side, drawing blood. That's gonna hurt in the morning.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "Kore, you're pretty much right about the Black Puddings vs. Monks thing."

Bors whuffs as he's absolutely clobbered with the club. Apparently this fellow's not happy about him coming up and stabbing him. He's not going to be able to take another hit like that, and so he shifts into overdrive - it's do or die time for him, and with a blade in each hand, he slashes like a madman. It's vicious and the blades sort of go snicker-snick. They actually go slashy slash, parting flesh and viscera messily, and leaving two bloody slashes in the creature. But it doesn't go down, and now Bors looks very worried.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "It's not specifically listed in the monster rules, so I did that. But maybe that wasn't fair."

Seeing Bors go down Kore lets out a gasp of irritation. She starts to speak but is interrupted by repeated assaults by the various oozes. Left, right, duck. If she wasn't so short she might be missing her head. As it is, Kore sees her chance when the Hill Giant bends forward with his club. She darts for the gap between his legs, pulling her silver harp out again to pray for protection as she does. The giant whirls, swinging the club down in a brutal arc. Kore just stops short as it misses.

The Monk pauses and for a second the whole world seems to go still. the giant is roaring. He lobs the ooze at her and she shifts her weight slightly, letting it fly past her shoulder. She can sense everything this way. His putrid scent, the heat of his breath. The wavering club. She pause there, one foot against hte ground and waits. They both lunge at the same time. Twenty feet of hard wood is swinging downward when Kore jumps. She lands on the branch and runs up its length to launch not one, not two, but three heavy kicks to the giant's jaw. As he sways, poleaxed, she punches him between the eyes and the Hill Giant hits the cavern floor with the thunderous crash of dense bone on stone. She's left breathing heavy, bloodied, standing atop his unconcious body in the darkness.

<OOC> Bors says, "Heh"
<OOC> Iadoth says, "Let's have a narration, then I'll plenarise."

Now that Kore is out of the cave she sets about collecting a pile of rocks. The oozes, being unable to emerge into nature and too stupid to retreat, become target practice. She chants prayers and mumbles koans while she goes through the process of inventing a game. You throw a rock and the other person tries to dodge it...

Dodgerock. Oozes are bad at it. After a few minutes of persistent throwing the oozes are no more.

<OOC> Kore says, "Just goes to show, Bors. Base to base, the oozes might have won. One lucky hit and I was a goner. Abuse the terrain until the GM wants the scene to end and you get an easy victory! :D"
<OOC> Kore says, "I kid."
<OOC> Kore says, "I've had fun. Thank you."

The oozes dispersed, or squished, and the giant slain, Kore has the opportunity to investigate what's going on. The giant's sack contained nothing more ominous than household waste, presumably brought here from some nearby settlement of the creatures. Whilst the origin of the creatures isn't known, they were clearly being exploited as eaters of waste. Still, now they are the waste, oozing and bubbling on the floor of the cave.

As for the giant --- well, that's an adventure for another day.

<OOC> Iadoth says, "So have I. In truth it would have been fun to trap you in the cave between a giant and an ooze, but by yourself that's not so much fun."
<OOC> Bors says, "Huh?"
<OOC> Kore says, "Decent chance it'd've been okay. I mean, one hit and I was down but the oozes had to roll 20s. But yeah, that would've been less fun."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "'Xactly."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "You both fought valiantly against the scourge."
<OOC> Kore says, "I feel bad for the giant."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "That first critical hit on Bors settled it for you though."
<OOC> Kore says, "The way this went it's possible Kore could have gone the full distance. But, um. Probably not. :)"
<OOC> Bors says, "Yeah, but my AC is junk, he would have done me in anyhow."
<OOC> Iadoth says, "His full attacks were pretty brutal."
<OOC> Bors nods
<OOC> Kore says, "If we'd both been up I could have used the Repose domain to buy you seven rounds in which he only got one attack a turn to kill him."
<OOC> Kore says, "That option doesn't work solo, unfortunately."
<OOC> Bors says, "Ahhhh"
