PrP: The Diary
The travel into Dragonier is ... decidedly chilling. Although crickets sing around you, and your boots chase the odd grasshopper from the grass as you travel cross-country, you haven't seen anything living that's bigger than a sparrow since shortly after you crossed the border. Farmhouses and keeps alike stand abandoned, many crumbling into weather-beaten disrepair.
You've been given a map and fairly solid directions to reach this family's keep, and they're not complicated; it's not too hard to keep yourselves on track.

Yngvild stomps along happily enough, the cold and grim not really effecting her mood. Sadly for the rest of the party she enjoys singing as she marches. Mercifully this cut short as they near the target area. She is dressed for adventuring, in her heavy armor with her Earthbreaker held at the ready.
Gareth is on foot and doesn't particularly care for the scenery. So it's time to check out the old mailbag! He has a parcel from ma he hasn't opened yet. Using his dagger, with the box tucked under his arm, he slices the twine binding off as well as the cheap wrapping cloth to find a small box full of cookies. Aww yiss. He keeps pace with the middle of the group and jams a few into his mouth, chewing with all the manners of a barnyard animal. The first person to make eye contact gets a toothy, crumb-riddled sheepish grin and the box offered to them.

Faiza has made polite introductions at the outset of the journey; Faiza Belvade of the Silver Guard. A shadow elf and official paladin. How novel. She walks with a steady gait, scanning the surroundings occasionally as they go, creepily luminous red eyes slightly narrowed. Relaxed but alert, like a good little soldier.
The sith-makar Charis keeps to himself at the back of the party, he's never been to dragonier before but the stories he has heard lately do nothing to but the shaman at ease as the group plods along the brown lizard man keeps his eyes and ears open.
His grey-gloved left hand sits on the hilt of his longsword; in his right hand, he carries a bow. Oliver shivers as he looks around, "naught living for miles," he murmurs. "Spooky..." The bow is strung, and ready, should anything untoward pop out of the woodwork, so to speak, and the archer continues to look as he walks, though whether he actually notices anything out of the ordinary - apart from the complete lack of bird or beast - is anyone's guess. He seems somewhat lost to thought this day, but for those who know him... that is not out of the ordinary.
Belladona travels along with Samafa and she frowns a little bit as she looks around at the disrepair that has gone on since the fall of Dragonier. She has her shield up and ready as they travel along. "Except for the simplest of life, nothing wishes to remain under the sway of Heth for long."

The group hasn't quite reached the target area, and Yngvild's Angorite serenade echoes across the quiet landscape. Well, at least now anything with ears knows you lot are here.
There doesn't seem to be that much going on. The sun is slanting down into the valley you're in, and it's nearing midday, with a chill, brisk breeze.
‘’You paged Belladona with Both you and Samafa catch the smell of death on the wind ... and something moving off to the left up ahead.’’
Belladona looks off to her left and she wrinkles her nose. Samafa growls softly. The druidess looks back at the others, "Be sharp, there is something dead off to the left." She says as she heads off in that direction.
Aevarr looks around at the uninviting scenery, and shivers with the chill. "Anything interesting was likely brought with during the evacuation or vanished after..."
Chill only seems to cheer Yngvild up a bit more. Still she has stopped singing at least. Not that she is much quieter in her heavy plate. Idly spinning the hammer in her hands she remains near the front, and meeting Gareth's gaze takes a handfull of cookies and munches happily on them.
There wasn't ever going to be much in the way of stealth, at least not with Faiza around -- the clank and clatter of plate armour and metal shield can be somewhat muffled with straps and padding, but it's still very much present. As Belladona abruptly veers off to the side, the redheaded Mul'niessa looks taken aback for a moment. "Perhaps we ought not go off the--" and then she's moving off after the Oruch, one hand loosening the shield from its mooring on the hooks at the back of her breastplate, just in case, so it's easily slid onto an arm.
"With all the noise you lot are making, if there /were/ anything living, we'd've scared it all off by now," Oliver says deadpan, but then as Belladona speaks, indicating something off to the left, he pulls an arrow from his quiver and follows after the druidess and her pet.
"Dhu-pends on how fhast shey ghawt awht" Gareth mumbles in response to Aevarr through a mouthful of oatmeal honey cookies. He does look up and around and takes a good sobering look at the desolate landscape. He swallows the cookies and wipes the crumbs from his mouth with a sleeve, taking care to brush any mess he made on his tabard.

Charis knows better then ingnore the warnings of a druidess, so as the woman veers of the path with the ourch close behind the shaman follows along as well.

Belladona looks around and she continues to smell death. She narrows her eyes a bit and she spots movement, "There is something moving." She says quietly to the others as she and Samafa try to be stealthy about it.
Aevarr does not ignore warnings... in most instances. He moves after Belladona, which is not a terrible change in scenery. "Could you clarify? Dead is not the same as DEAD when Heth's involved..."

Yngvild crunches until her own cookies are eaten, then follows those more at home in the wilderness. Trying her best to keep her wits about her, but she is not one of nature's scouts at the best of times. Still sounds like undead, which are much more her forte.

Samafa being much more stealther then Belladona.
Gareth's nose wrinkles and he slows his pace. He sniffs the cookies in case a rat got in the box and died, then a sniff check on his armpit. Nawp, he took a bath last week. The cookies are put back in his back and the sheperd's crook is brought in both hands, ready to brain any zombie bastards that come flying out of this Cormac McCarthy-style hellscape.

Oliver, when stealth is called for, can move as silently as a will-o-wisp, and now he does so, moving off to one side of the rest of the party by a good ten or fifteen feet, not so far that he cannot rush back if required, but far enough that if they are taken by surprise, he will hopefully not be in the line of fire or noted. He says nothing, but silently nocks the arrow he's drawn, ready to loose it when he must. When others attempt to remain quiet, Aevarr joins in the endeavor. In fact, he follows in the footsteps of the one who seemed the most quiet, to avoid any pitfalls of others.
There's the sound of a shield being pulled onto an arm and a sword being drawn. It's not the metal-on-metal *schiiing!* of Hollywood -- rather a more wooden, leathery sound. Hooray for realism! The shadow elf paladin of Eluna draws her blade left-handed, shield on her right arm, and... keeps following Belladona, but hanging a little back, so as not to completely ruin the element of surprise with her CLANK CLATTER RATTLE of armour.

Yngvild probably should have left the percussion section at home, because she makes enough noise for a brass band. Hopefully the enemy will think she is a batallion or something and run away. We can hope anyway.

Charis continues to follow Belladona he keeps his body low and his movements slow, however the terrain trips him up, this not the Am'shere not quite the terrian he is used to hunting in.
Some of you are sneakier than others as you divert from the path and into the grass. A grasshopper jumps out from under someone's booted foot, but after a few steps, you aren't even seeing those ... and perhaps twenty paces off the road, behind a large boulder whose positioning might as well have made it a local landmark, four ... things ... appear and advance on the party. Rotting and putrid, these humanoid creatures might have once have been human. The tattered remains of servants' clothing hang off of frames that are skeletal in places. One and all ... the eye sockets where eyes might once have been burn with a malevolent, evil red light as they raise skeletal hands to close with the group.

As soon as the creatures show their undead faces, Oliver pulls back his bow and lets fly at the nearest one, the arrow striking - perhaps not as truly as he would have preferred. Biting back an oath, he draws another arrow.

Yngvild steps forward as she spies the undead that are heading towards them. Under her helm a tight grin crosses her face as she raises her hammer to the sky and boldly steps forward "IRON MOUNTAIN WITNESS" she bellows, her loud voice rising to the heavens "BLESS THE BRAVE WHO FIGHT, AND CURSE THOSE WHO STAND AGAINST" she commands then stomps her right food down. A burst of blue light slams out to engulf all those near her in the blessing of her god.

Gareth moves to the front line and stands next to Yngvild, empowered by the Bro force of Angoron's power washing over him. The crook is held in the backswing, ready to smite any heathen undead that come close.

The first and quickest of the wights takes exception to the arrow sticking out of its moldering wrist bones, and lets out a roar of anger, charging the ranger. Its brute-force attack goes wild, though, and Oliver can dodge it easily.

Charis moves foward a few feet as he sees a skeleton starting to charge the lines, Nawh his not letting that happen the sorcerer puts a hand forward and states a few words in draconic then 5 fingers of flame shoot from the scaled hand making the charging creature a bit toasty!

There would be a dramatic drawing of the sword except the sword is already drawn, so Faiza, frowning deeply in disapproval at the wight's temerity in assaulting one of her companions, simply brings her shield up before herself like a battering ram and starts -running-. At the last moment, just before slamming bodily into the undead horror bothering the archer, she -twists-, spinning around so that all the force of her charge is brought into the blade as she runs slightly -past- it. The effect is devastating - she rips a huge gouge of undead, rotting flesh out of the thing's side. "I would tell you to desist, monster," she says, huffing with exertion, "but you get no mercy."

Like in the samurai movies that are technologically and culturally completely inappropriate for the setting, the wight pauses a moment after Faiza's charge, half-turns as if to face her, and then gently collapses into a heap of dead deadness.

A second wight strides up to the cleric, swinging at the bold Angorite standing all pretty there! Fortunately for Yngvild and Gareth, the Althean's wild swing is enough to divert the creature in a swing of its own; in order to dodge Gareth's blow, its own swing must turn aside, and goes wild.

Belladona rushes up with Samafa and she goes to slash at the wright. She misses, but leaves an opening for Samafa to bite down and takes a chuck out of it.

So rude! The one Aevarr tripped gets to what passes for feet and dodges away from that whip, moving instead towards Faiza and Oliver. It won't get there just yet, though. Meanwhile, Aevarr has a bigger problem, as the last one charges him -- or would if these things could hit the broad side of a barn with a bucket of paint. As it is, its swing again goes wide.

Yngvild shifts her grip so she holds the hammer in one hand, and presents her hold symbol with the other "PATRON OF HEROES. SHOW THEM YOUR HOLY LIGHT" she commands to the sky as again the bright blue Holy Light of her god shines out. And doesn't seem to do much beyond scorching them around the edges. Still the Aesir seems largely irrepressable and takes a two handed grip to get ready for HAMMER TIME.

Charis moves as another falls, he heads for wight D stopping once his with-in spell range. Once more a scaled hand gets extended and words calling forth flames are spoken and a five fingered cone of fire flies from the shanans fingers making a slightly charred Wight.

Faiza, fresh off the destruction of the last wight, doesn't pause for long; glancing over at the furthest enemy away, she instead aims herself squarely at the approaching one that's been singed around the edges by a wash of fire from Charis. Again she rears slightly back and kicks up dirt behind her as she accelerates, and again she twists, this time drawing her blade up from an underhand swing and splitting the undead enemy's ribcage in a spectacle of possibly over the top gore. "We have the advantage!" she shouts, perhaps unnecessarily. "Press on the last one!"

Aevarr finds himself under attack by an unhappy undead, unfortunately. Too close to whip it, he instead cracks his shield into it's face. What was left of it. "No, you still don't look any better..."

Gareth wipes the gore splattered on his face from the giantborn mincing the wight next to him. Staggering back, he wipes his face clean, spitting, just in time to see another wight! He lurches forward and gives it a good knock to the head, caving most of it's skull in. But unfortunately, wights apparently function just fine without a brain, unlike (political party)! haw haw haw!

Belladona moves around to get at the wight and so does Samafa. She goes to swing at the wight, but she misses. Samafa is having much better luck as she bites down on the wight and tears it in half.

So take what you learned and soup up the next ecnounter a bit more, and use more 'cannon fodder' monsters. Like 'a number of wights missing their lower halves are crawling towards you'. They'll die in a hit, but they soak up attacks. :D’’
Well. That's anticlimactic. Faiza pauses, shield and sword held ready for another few seconds, before slowly lowering them and glancing around. "Perhaps," she suggests, "we had better move on to our destination. I doubt that's the last wights in Dragonier, and if we let ourselves get sidetracked too much..." She doesn't finish the sentence. Nor does she sheathe her blade; instead, drawing a cloth from a pouch hanging from her belt, she fastidiously wipes the metal clean of wight-gore while beginning to move back towards the road.
Stjepan grounds his sword, then wipes it clean as well -- stupid bisected bodies leaving smears. He nods. "Right. Let's go. As much as I want to make a pyre for them, we've got to walk past here later."
"Praise the Iron Mountain. Well done all" Yngvild says, keeping her booming voice down just a little as she claps those near her on the shoulder. She nods to Faiza and starts off down towards where they were directed.
Oliver nods, moves to retrieve his two arrows, and gives them both a disgusted look and thinks better of it when he thinks about what they're sticking out of. "Never mind. Let's go..." and he moves off in the direction the group was headed before the unfortunate encounter with the wights.
Belladona goes to check Samafa's teeth to pick out some wight flesh and she gives Samafa some herbs, "Here to get the taste of undead out of your mouth." She says as she looks around, 'Well shall get heading back to the keep."
Aevarr offers Belladona a bow, even if it was her ally who dispatched the wight. "My thanks, my dear." He straightens and coils his whip. "Yes, we should away quickly. Wouldn't want the keep to escape before we reach it."
Gareth starts pawing through what remains of their pockets and clothing. Gasp! He produces a wedding ring from one of their fingers and looks on the inside before he pockets it and studies the twisted ruin of a face the ring was looted from. A quick shake removes any gore clotted on his staff and a hankerchief wipes the worst off the remainder off his face. He offers up a quick prayer in Celestial for each one to the point of trailing behind the others, then does his best to catch up.
Charis eyes the dead Wights. "Yes. On the way back we should give the bodies to the flames." the shaman states quitely as once more he trails the rest of the party moving back to the set path they were all on.
Stjepan strides onwards, switching sword for bow as he goes.
Yngvild mercifully is too much on edge now to sing. And she does her best not to make too much noise. As fruitless as that is with her choice in steel clothing and sheer size. Still her ice blue eyes are wary and hammer is held ready.
If she is concerned with anything other than their current, practical predicament, Faiza gives no indication. Waiting at the road until the rest of the group has gathered, the redheaded Mul'niessa keeps a sharp eye on the surroundings, expression carefully blank and unreadable. She takes up point, taking care to keep ahead of the rest of the group to hopefully take the brunt of any surprise attacks. Which she's probably going to completely fail to avoid, noisy as the clanking of her armour is.
Belladona nods to Aevarr, "You are welcome." She says as she and Samafa move towards the front to help scout out any potential problems.
Aevarr will gladly let the others rush to the front. Someone must bravely remain to guard the flank!
Gareth sorts himself towards the middle front after finally catching up and keeps his head down, grasping the strap of his pack with a free hand. He is all sad and introspective looking. oh noez!
Eventually, the lot of you reach the keep that matches the description you were given. Like just about every structure you've seen here, it's deserted, with no sign of life bigger than a sparrow in evidence.Really more of a manor house than a true keep, in this case, with only a wall and gates surrounding it, the iron-barred gates ornately decorated and secured with a chain and lock.
Stjepan looks at the chain and lock. "Do we want to bother, or would people like a hole in the wall?"
<OOC> Faiza says, "If I try to Detect Evil, am I going to go blind from the ambient evil aura of evilness saturating the area?" <OOC> Jessamy says, "ONly one way to find out."
Belladona hmms, "Depends does anyone else know any thing about the locks?" She asks as she starts to look around the wall. "We might be able to climb over."
<OOC> Faiza makes sonar pinging noises.
Yngvild glances down at the chain and lock and then up to the others around "Not meaning to make any accusations" she rumbles a little drily with a nod to the lock "But can anyone pick that or is it time to break out the hammer?" she asks, a little eagerly.
<OOC> Gareth faces behind Faiza and checks the other direction, spins around arm in arm. Now we got radar. <OOC> Jessamy says, "You're not detecting evil in the immediate area."
Stjepan grunts. "I can just break it."
Gareth scratches his head, "Well, I guess. Just do it quiet?" He looks around himself, but doesn't quite take on the vacant eyed look of a paladin sensing malevolence.
Faiza ... stands back and watches. She's a paladin, she doesn't carry lockpicking equipment. Or lockbashing hammers, for that matter. Still, those eerily luminescent blood-red eyes scan the surroundings warily. For signs of eeeevil.
"Just break the lock. I'm sure no one would mind." Charis states evenly with a sagely nod. "and since they give us a key, they deserve a broken gate."

Belladona looks around and she moves aside to let those that want to to break it.
"Maybe I should just sing so they really know we are coming" Yngvild deadpans. Of course with the heavily armored folks it is kins of inevitable anyway. Still she does take a few steps back and keep an eye out, just in case.
Stjepan takes his time, wrapping the chain around both hands. He gets a good grip, sets his feet, and then starts straining. His face goes red, he calls out "ANGORON!" and with a *BANG* the lock-and-chain fly apart in his hands. He, then, pushes the gate open with two fingers. "After you," he says to the group.
"I don't yell "Althea!" every time I put a bandage on somebody." Gareth says with only a faint hint of mild annoyance. Still, he steps beyond the threshold, staff at the ready, paladin-sense up.
Aevarr winces at the sudden yell. "Well, on the bright side, I don't think anyting could hear the chain breaking over the yelling..."
Stjepan shrugs. "Maybe you're doing it wrong." He keeps the gate open. "Are we going in, or is there a requisite waiting period before stepping through a portal that must be satisfied whether is it open or closed that I just haven't been informed of."
Faiza is first through the gate, or... well, tries to be. Shield up, sword out, scanning the area. "Be careful. We don't know what awaits us in here." She steps towards the keep, carefully. "Eluna watch over us," she says, just loud enough to be heard, with conviction. "Silver Moon, shine your light upon your faithful..." Pause. "And companions."
Yngvild is happy to let the Mul take point, although she clatters along not too far behind. Not entirely timid about marching forth she does keep an eye out and her mouth shut. For the moment anyway.
As is usual, Oliver steps off to one side once the chain is broken. His bow remains in his right hand, an arrow in his left, eyes open, scanning around for more of the wights - or worse.
Once a well-kept manor house, this home's lush lawns and gardens have gone to seed, and stones here and there have begun to crack and crumble as the weather takes its toll. There's still nothing moving here ... not even bugs, now. There's no other sign of life here.
Charis steps through the now opened gate after the heavy armor folks go, his not exactly the type to take point the shaman is much more comfortable slinging his flames from the back out of harms ways. Stjepan turns in, as the group files through, exchanging bow from sword once more.
Belladona follows in after the others after the gate is opened. She looks around and she has her claws out and ready.

Aevarr frowns at the lack of... anything but them. "if we're the only living things here, I hope we stay that way. I'm rather partial to breathing."

Gareth pokes at the dead grass and eyes the trees, looking disconcerted about the dead flora more than the spooky house, though as the group draws closer, he focuses his attention on that while heading toward the opened front door.
Moving as quietly as he can, Oliver makes his way towards the gaping front door of the once-fine manor house, nocking his arrow on the bowstring as he does. He says nothing, but raises his bow, and indicates with a gesture that he will cover whoever wants to go first through that door.
<OOC> Jessamy says, "Not dead so much as gone to seed, i.e. untended."
Yngvild's eyes shift around to the others then to the open door "Can anyone sense anything inside?" she asks, then as Oliver shifts up to cover the door she heads towards it slowly herself, although as the healer of the party she doesn't step through first just yet.
As Faiza reaches the front door, she pauses briefly beside it, peeking around to peer inside... and then abruptly moves through it, shield first. "The Silver Guard is here!" she announces, loudly and firmly. "The light of the Silver Moon shines don upon this place! Fell creatures, evildoers, ne'er-do-wells! Depart or be judged!" She manages, somehow, despite being all of five feet tall, to seem... somehow larger than herself. It's a paladin thing.
Stjepan looks at Yngvild for a moment, and as Faiza yells, he crinkles into a grin. "Let's see what comes out, shall we?" He leans up against the wall next to the door, sword at the ready.
Belladona looks over at Faiza and she shakes her head a little bit as she tries to be stealthy as she moves around, "Well let's find this diary and jewelry that was left behind."
Nothing comes out, or indeed responds to the mul'niessa's cry ... not at first. The house lies open to you, and now your mission comes back to you -- to find a diary and some jewelry left behind.
Aevarr keeps his eyes and ears peeled for deadly things. Failing that, next on the list are valuables. "The study and the library, then? Both are probably upstairs."

Faiza looks only slightly deflated. "Well," she says with a crooked little half-grin. "At least we know they're not fans of theatrical standoffs, if there are any nasties about." The redhead in the shiny, shiny armour moves a little further into the front hall itself, to take stock of the layout. "One thing we should NOT do it split up. Stick together, move through room by room."
"Lets not split up. I have heard too many bard's tales" Yngvild advises sagely. She considers Aevarr's words and nods once with her agreement. Then with nothing popping out at the Paladin's challenge she steps on inside and starts to poke about.
Gareth pauses at the threshhold and pulls a small stoppered flask from one of his belt pouches, letting a few drops dribble on the ground of the door frame, muttering some small prayer. Althea is the goddess of hearth and home, after all. He steps inside and whistles lowly, looking up at all the space. "There's so much room for activities." He blurts out.
Stjepan curls inside after. "Agreed. Let's start searching."
"Strength in numbers, of course," Aevarr nods to others. "Let's get this done and over with. The quicker we're done, the quicker we can get warm."
"I would think a diary and jewlery would be in the bedroom No?" Charis states as he enters the manor. "I agree we should all stick together"
"Wherever it is, we'll have the best luck finding it if we look everywhere there is to look," Oliver points out helpfully, stepping in through the door after the others.

Belladona hmmms as she looks around, "Stay sharp." She says as she and the lioness move around sniffing.

Oliver holds up a hand, listening carefully, and gesturing for quiet so that he can hear, and possibly identify which way the sounds are coming from. After a moment, he looks to the druidess, and then cocks his head to the right with a questioning look on his face.
Belladona cranes her head to the right and she makes some hand signals indicating it's towards the right.

Yngvild has been working on it, but is not the most observant of folks. Even when not in her clattering armor. Still when folks ask for silence she stops still, eyes glancing around from under her helm but she seems oblivious to where the sound came from.

The Sith-Makar cant make left or right from the sounds, it fills the air all around him. So as he mostly does any Charis stays to the back of the pack and follows the rest of the group whom seem to have a better grip on the situation then he does.

You'd think a member of a race specially adapted for navigation in the pitch blackness of underground passages would be able to pinpoint where that creepy, creepy singing is coming from. But no, Faiza looks as unsure as the rest of them... until Oliver makes his gestures. Pointing more clearly towards the right, mouthing 'Coming from there?', the Mul'niessa paladin begins to move towards the indicated direction, still looking to the archer for confirmation... and then abruptly stops, muttering under her breath at the clank and clatter of her armour.

Moving quietly, and keeping himself to the left side of the corridor so as not to impede his bow draw, Oliver moves off in the direction of the sounds. He nods at Faiza's mouthed words, and gestures to move as quietly as possible - knowing perfectly well that tin cans do not move quietly.

Following the Archer's lead Charis gets low and creeps, moving silently is something the lizard can do hunting in the Am'shere demands it otherwise the predator becomes the prey.

Yngvild knowing she has little hope of being stealthy lets the others go ahead as she waits behind, ready to dash up when and if needed. Otherwise she seems content to watch and wait, leaning a little on her hammer.
The childish singing turns to a different one as Faiza's armor clatters in the stone hall, sending echoes down both halls and back, then fades out altogether ... only to be replaced a moment later by the soft sobbing of a lonely child.
At the crash and clatter behind him, Oliver pauses, then moves again. The archer is not particularly hiding in shadows like a rogue, but with any degree of good fortune, whatever is singing up there will focus on the smashing and bashing, and ignore him. As he moves, he looks to both sides for the danger of doors, or other openings into other rooms. But when the singing changes to sobbing, he stops in his tracks, holding up a hand once more so that he can listen. Could this child be /living/ in this house??
Oh, come on, that's not fair. With a sigh, Faiza moves slowly but steadily ahead, mentally bracing herself for whatever terrible sights she's bound to find further on. Her expression is kept carefully neutral, but the furrowing of her brows is telling of the inner debate she's holding. Finally, having paused to allow Oliver to listen for a moment, she moves cautiously ahead. "Hello?" Oh yes, just announce your presence even clearer, why don't you. "We mean no harm. We are sent from the Explorer's Guild in Alexandria..." Pause, beat. "And from the Silver Guard of Eluna."
Belladona does her best to be stealthy, but Samafa is much better at it then she is at it. She looks around and keeps her sense sharp. She has her claws out and she looks around, "I doubt a child lives here."

Well as it seems the jig is up. So to speak. Yngvild clatters forward. And manages to drop her hammer. Which she then trips over. And getting up manages to knock a vase off a pedestal that smashes on the ground. Luckily she is wearing a helm so no-one can see just how bright her face is flushing as she levers herself up with a clatter of steel on steel "Oops" she says looking as the mess she left behind.
The crash and clatter from steel on steel is terrific, and for a moment, its echoes, only partly muffled by tattered tapestries and moldering carpet that might once have been deep mauve in color, sing through the upstairs, drowning out even the sounds of whatever child lingers in this place. The vase is wholly shattered, its tiny and sharp pieces littering the floor at the head of t he main stair.
Oliver rolls his eyes, then shakes his head rather hopelessly, though he's grinning in spite of the seriousness of the situation. "Oh, /well done,/" he mutters in a slightly bemused tone. "It's a good thing we're not here for the crockery..." He listens carefully, trying to narrow down the source of the sobbing.

Charis just shakes his scaled head. So much for the quiet approach. He stays crouched low anyhow staying alert and still quiet. THe Sith has nothing notable to add at least not until something needs a dart to the eye or to be set on fire.

The hallway down which the party finds themselves moving has no light at all past about 10' into the hall. Those of you with darkvision discern closed doors to either side of the hallway, although there are more doors on the left than the right, and none at all on teh right after roughly 30' into the hallway, until teh very end of the hall, where there is a door at the end and a door to the right of the end of the hall.
A discarded toy sword, wooden and rotting, lies forlornly in the middle of the hall.
About fifteen feet down the corridor, Oliver pauses, and swears under his breath, "darker than the inside of a closet in here," he mutters. "Can't see... anybody got a light of some kind?" he asks, sotto voce.
As it become pitch black Yngvild looks to the heavens and rather than risk another clericlanch simply says "Light" in a firm voice but not her usual bellow. As she does the holy mountain symbol around her neck starts to glow a bright blue light that spreads over the party.
<OOC> Oliver says, "What is the range on that spell, Yngvild?"
Faiza pauses then, extending her own sword and poking, cautiously, at the abandoned toy sword. "Well, that is downright unsettling," she mutters, and then glances back at her companions... before suddenly seeming to realise something. There's a sudden sound as if something igniting... and then her sword does just that. Intense silver flames begin to dance and writhe along the blade of her elegant longsword, bathing the corridor in an eerie, flickering light.
<OOC> Oliver says, "If we're in a 10' corridor and there are six of us counting the cat, if we walk two abreast, we are taking up 15' if we're bunched together." <OOC> Faiza says, "Celestial Spirit Weapon: Flaming. :)"
Charis says, "Soft skins eyes of the dead." Charis mutters. "I can see clearly.." Then after Faiza decides to light her sword on fire he says a few choice curses in draconic. "Well I was able to see...""
<OOC> Jessamy says, "Light spell range is as a torch, which means 20' of normal light and 20' of dim light beyond that." <OOC> Oliver says, "Works." <OOC> Faiza says, "And flaming sword sheds light like a torch." <OOC> Jessamy nods. So you have two torches with overlapping ranges, one front, one back, so assume that within 20' of you you see normally and dim light 20' beyond that. Does that help?
"Thanks," Oliver murmurs, then pauses to crouch by the discarded and rotting toy sword. Though he does not pick it up, he briefly bows his head. "This has been here for quite some time," he says softly, then looks to the door at the end of the hall. "Sounds like whatever was singing - crying - is behind that door..." he moves closer to the side of the hallway, and gestures for someone in better armor to open the door as he draws his bow and aims chest-high at the closed entryway.
The soft sounds of a child's sobbing are again clearly audible .. adn this time, it's clearly further down the hallway. The door at the end of the hall on the right creaks open ... maybe an inch.

Belladona looks over her shoulders as the lights come in. She does try the doors on the doors on the left. She peeks in if she can open the the doors. She looks back at the others. "Probably the ghost of a child if I had to guess."
Faiza gives the row of doors a skeptical glance as the group makes their way past them, but doesn't offer a comment. Instead, she takes up a position directly in front of the final door, shield held at the ready and standing in the middle of what will be the doorway when opened, so as to take the brunt of whatever may be coming. When the door begins to creak open, she... doesn't yank it fully back, but instead says in a calm voice, "Don't be afraid. The fire you see are the flames of Eluna - they will not harm an innocent."

Yngvild seems happy enough bringing up the rear, mercifully not singing or even humming. She does however shift her grip on her giant hammer as the door starts to creak open by itself "Crying child sounds, self-opening doors. Not at all creepy" the huge Aesir rumbles, deep voice deadpan.

Oliver's head whips around towards the other end of the hall, and this time when he swears, it isn't under his breath. "There's something down there," he says, though he keeps his arrow trained on the self-opening door with the creepy child sounds coming from behind it... for now.
Yngvild is spinning around even before Oliver's warning, onme hand raising her hammer as the other reaches for her holy symbol "ANGORON WITNESS!" she bellows out as she present it boldly "GIVE US YOUR BLESSINGS!" she commands the heavens as the bright blue glow spreads to engulf the party.

Charis spins quickly to see whats comming, hearing the footsteps he readies a dart in hand, though for strange reason he has the feeling he'll be relying on his magic not his throwing skills.

None of you are seeing anything for the moment ... but the sound of sobs isn't just one child anymore ... nor is it all children. It's a curious, sad cacophony of adult moans of agony, children's sobs, and ... that curious nursery rhyme song, all mashed together in a chilling chorus of sound that tells the tale of the end of a benighted keep.
Out of the cracked door, at Faiza's call, a curious ... something appears, the door opening a little further. What comes out as the door finally swings wide is ... well, it looks like a moving child's quilt. Bony arms hold a book of children's tales, the pages rotting, and a couple of old blocks cling to the blanket as if stuck there by static cling. Topping all of this is the skull of what might have been a small toy dog, with a long snout and empty eye sockets. It looks up at her, that cacophony of voices still clinging to it, and reaches for her hand.

Swearing again - this bowman has a mouth like a long shoreman - Oliver lets fly with the arrow he's been pointing at the door, lowering it just enough that it thunks into the creature... Whatever this horror of horrors is, with its awful blend of blanket, toys, and moldering books, it now has an arrow sticking out of it as well... and one of the blocks falls to the floor with a dull thud against the once-mauve carpeting. Shuddering, Oliver draws out another arrow.

From the back of the group, further down the hall, there's another problem. Dropping all stealth, the sound of running feet and the smell of rotting flesh assault's the party's nostrils as another wight, this one clad in a nightdress that is tattered, torn, and bloodstained, slams into Yngvild from behind, bruising the cleric.

More wights come rushing up from behind -- two more, to be exact, but only one crashes into Belladona in the confines of the hall -- the others are beginning to pile up behind the first, waving skeletal hands as they reach for the living. The one, though, scores a solid hit on the druid, draining a bit of her life force away as well as leaving deep and painful bruises from its slam attack.

There's more noise in the back of the hallway -- sounds like there are more coming. The small amalgam of toys, meanwhile, looks up at Faiza with empty eye sockets that are somehow ineffably sad as well as creepy, and reaches around her shield to tug at her sleeve. Suddenly, Faiza's words of reassurance -- in her voice - is added to the soft mishmash of voices with which it speaks, joining the chorus of songs and sobs and moans.

This Pincer attack just doesnt work for Charis as he doesnt see a way to get off his spells, looking around he sees a side table wich the lizard tries to jump on for a little height however the shaman just isnt nible enough and his little leap falls short.

Yngvild's teeth grit as her warrior instincts rise up. Then she is brushed by the cold chill of the grave as the undead thing gets past her guard.. The cleric's formidable will drives it off and whilst there is no trace of fear it does clear her head. She nods to Bella and shifts back as requested to let the great cat fowrard, a hand reaching to one of her pouches and pulls out a carved runestone. She holds it up and begins to chant in celestial. Bright blue light steams from her fist as she slowly closes it, the stone turning to dust in her grasp as the holy light of the Iron Mountain spreads forth.

Stjepan strikes through the attic-thing with the grunt of a committed swing, smashing skull and quilt on a diagonal, revealing the nothingness beneath. The endless nothingness. It remains animate, though.

Another arrow loosed, but this time it misses wide, pinging off the stone wall of the corridor next to the door and falling with a muffled clatter as it bounces a couple of times down the carpeted hallway. Another arrow drawn, but Oliver is displeased. He turns the air blue around his head with his swearing.
As Samafa moves into its range, the wight that went after Yngvild now aims a skeletal hand at Samafa, but the lioness nimbly dodges away.

Faiza would say something, but quickly discovers her voice is gone. Instead - with an expression more of sadness than anything else - she follows up the pummeling her giantborn colleague gives the collection of rags and malicious magic with a broad sweep of her blade. As she swings, a bright silver light seems to shine down to illuminate her flaming blade and the target of her swing, as though the action is being observed by the paladin's patron deity herself for a brief moment. There's a tear of cloth and dull roar of flames, and the Attic Whisperer is no more. The Mul'niessa redhead clenches her jaw and turns to the next target.

As the child-amalgam thing crumbles into its component toys and blankets, another wight steps through the door to take its place. It immediately goes after Stjepan, slamming into him without much force but with the chill of the grave behind its touch, sapping his lifeforce. There's more movement at the back, and the one on Belladonna doesn't manage to get through her guard again.

Charis continues looking for a way to off a spell, this time though he just sticks his arm through those on the front line and says the words in draconic to bring forth flames from his fingers with shoots out amoung the undead. However it doesnt have quite the effect the shaman hoped for, Nor soaring flames of wights. Just a little blister burn.

Yngvild's grin is fierce as she feels the holy power of her patron around her. Hoisting her hammer high she gives forth a spontaneous roaring warcry of"ANGORON" that echoes off the walls around her. As she does she slams her heavy booted foot burst of his bright blue light that engulf all around. It scorches those close and as one collapses to bones and dust she hoists her hammer and yells "IRON MOUNTAIN" in the same booming and triumphant voice.

Stjepan reels back from the soul-sucking touch of the wight. He gets his sword up and in the way, then drops it down in a crunching blow. Bone buckles, but the undead's animating force is stronger than that.

This arrow Oliver looses does /not/ miss. With a cry of, "SELA!" he fires, striking the thing directly between its glowing red eyes... the eyes go out, and the wight crumples to the floor in death.

The doorway is getting in the way of Faiza's swing, agile as it is! With a grunt and a grimace, the redheaded paladin wrenches her flaming blade out of the frame before it can start to char the wood and make the place even MORE of a deathtrap for the poor adventurers.

Charis moves foward a few steps and repeats what he did last time casting flames out safely from behind others, once again though the results of his action are not as nice as he would them to be, but every little singe counts.

It scorches through two of them and sends a third back to dust and bone.

Belladona nods to Yngvild as the holy energy takes out the wight that attacked her. She moves to rub more herbs on Samafa to strength her whole body. The lioness attacks the wight in front of her with renewed fury and rips it to pieces.

As bones crumble to dust, more take their place ... is there no end to them? But these ... these are half of a body, crawling on arms made strong by evil force, and one rakes its hand across Faiza's greave with a nasty chalkboard noise, to no avail.

Stjepan takes a half-step forwards as Faiza is clawed at, and brings his sword downwards in the manner of a sledgehammer. Bones crunch, wood splits, and the red light dies in that wight's eyes.

Loosing arrows, perhaps not as swiftly as other archers can - not yet, at any rate - is what Oliver does best, and he looses another, aiming at the glowing red beyond the gaping door. Though the room beyond the door is dark, the satisfying thunk-splutch of the arrow striking emaciated undead flesh, and the shift of the glowing red eyes, rocking back for a moment with the impact, tells him he's hit his target.

Finally, the rustling further down the hall resolves into something that those without darkvision can see. Two more of the half-a-wights are moving -- crawling -- relatively slowly down the hall in your direction, and one finally manages to close with Belladona.
Instead of moving into the darkened room beyond and risking splitting the group up - never split the party is like a mantra for most adventurers, by now - Faiza instead raises her shield, hunkering down behind it, shining blade held at the ready to lash out the moment anything hostile shoes its face in the doorway. The flickering light of the flames running up the length of her sword illuminates the carnage-filled scene eerily.

And then the wight DOES appear, and Faiza... completely fails to connect with it, with a wild swing that only barely avoids taking another chunk out of the doorframe. She doesn't have anything against doorframes, honest. They're just... in the way!

Fortunately, doorframes cut both ways, and as Faiza swings, her wild swing takes her out of reah of its return attack.

Seeing how his fire would likely hit his allies Charis grabs a dart from his belt and tosses it towards the oncoming wight however the aim off and the thuds into the wall instead of the undead.

Yngvild's eyes flick around the rather crowded battlefield, her hammer swinging carefully. Noting no gaps for even small folks, let alone someone her size she grounds the hammer with a loud CRACK as light flares from beneath it. The bright blue holy light flares out scorching those she can see but this time they all stay upright.

Belladona goes to slash at the wight in front of her, but she misses. Samafa has no better luck as she only manages to hit with only one of her paws.

- THUNK!* Oliver draws back and fires yet again, another arrow sinking into the rotting flesh of the red-eyed wight Faiza has trapped in the side room. With the glow of Faiza's sword, he sees another arrow shaft sticking out of his target, and pulls another arrow from his quiver, preparing to fire again.

Samafa and Faiza are both the subject of slams from putrid, crawling half-a-wights, but neither finds purchase, whether because of spells or sheer luck. Doors may be dangerous, but doorframes are your friends.

Move she does, indeed -- stepping INTO the darkened room beyond, Faiza dashes to the side in silence, clearing Stjepan's view of the wight within... and then proceeds to slash her sword through the scrabbling, crawling thing's spine just under its neck, severing nerves and unlife in one fell swoop of silver flames. Pausing, the Mul'niessa glances up at her giantborn companion, eyes glowing eerie red in the gloom within, and gives an apologetic little shrug.

The perils of being large and armoured in tight corridors. Yngvild looks a little frustrated as she takes her hammer between her two hands and spins it around in her palms "IRON MOUNTAIN" she implores as again the holy blue light shines out and scorches across the remaining undead, both still remain. Well animate if not alive.

Belladona slashes at the wight that she managed to hold off as Samafa finishes the one that attacked her. Belladona still feels weak from the first wight attack as she pants softly. "I don't think my healing can fix this."
Faiza moves her mouth as if speaking... but no sounds come out. Instead, she gives Belladona a firm little nod as if to say, with body language and expression alone, that it'll be all right, we'll get you sorted. She's pretty expressive, all right?
"We should give this place to the flames after we find what we came for." Charis states softly as looks upon the corpses of many dead undead things.
Breathing, Oliver leans against the wall for just a moment, then straightens, "yes. The diary... we have to find it," he says, looking then at Faiza, and cocking his head, "your voice...?" he asks, rubbing his hand over his face, "is anyone injured?" clearly, he is not.
Stjepan spits, and then cleans his sword on a corner of his cloak. "I was touched." He shivers. "I don't think I'll forget that for a while."
"Well that went better than I had expected. Praise Angoron" Yngvild says as she looks around the party for the obviously injured "Anyone touched can seek me out at the temple after morning prayers" she offers as she looks around "Shall we get what we were contract for?"
Faiza is completely silent. It's downright eerie. She tests it again a couple of times, opening her mouth, blood vessels at the side of her neck standing out as she clearly makes as though yelling... but nothing. Not even a peep. Finally, she shrugs, and peers down at the sad little singed pile of cloth and discarded toys that was the source of the whispers. There's a beat, and then the paladin is actually hunching down, putting a finger to the cloth, and pressing her other hand to the embossed crescent moon on her breastplate, eyes closing briefly as if in prayer.
Stjepan starts looking around. "Hopefully we didn't cut it up already."
The room from which the creatures came seems to have been a blood-soaked nursery -- signs of a fight, blood and all, linger everywhere, the place smashed to bits. Other rooms -- some are empty, some show the same.
At length, you find the box and the diary you were instructed to find, in what appears to have been a personal study or library of sorts. The jewelry is untouched.
Belladona stretches out a little bit before she sucks it up and heads in afer the others. She says a silent prayer to the Earth Mother as she moves from room to room. She hmms, "Looks like we got what we came for...let's head out?"
Stjepan shivers a little. "No. We put this place to rest. Burn it. Something."
"We'd better," Oliver nods to Yngvild. "And we'd better stick together... there may be more of them..." he keeps his bow strung and in hand, keeps an arrow nocked on the string, as he looks around. "Did they say where this diary might be found? And the other things?" a look of pity crosses the archer's face as he watches Faiza with the pile of toys and cloth and arrows that he helped to bring down. When the box is finally found, he closes his eyes, "all of this... for this?" he asks, rhetorically. "What an unspeakable mess..." he looks at Charis "You were right; we should put the place to the torch...."
Faiza points at Stjepan, then Oliver, nodding. Clearly the silent paladin agrees with putting the place to the torch. She's remained silent throughout the search and retrieval; it's not certain how long it'll last. At any rate, the redhead remains wary, blood-red eyed peering into dark corners as the group moves through the house.
Yngvild glances around as she pulls her helm off to run a hand through her sweaty hair, whilst keeping it in its' braid as she considers, a frown darkening her face a little "I am...well..." she trails off and takes a deep breath, looking up to the heavens for inspiration "Burn it" she says by way of agreement.
Stjepan nods. "Let's, then." He starts gathering up remains and wood, looking for a good place to build a pyre.
Charis nods slowly. "I'll set it up as we head out, Doing it now and here would just make things that much more difficult upon our exit."
"Right, then," Oliver nods, and slings his bow over his shoulder before reaching into his pouch for flint and steel. "Most of this will burn quickly enough... I can also make an arrow and fire it in once we're safely outside," he suggests.
Faiza assists with the gathering of materials, in silence. She's usually fairly reticent, but the total lack of sound from her is downright disconcerting -- and apparently to herself, too. She makes motions over the corpses left after the battle as they are passed, however, mouth moving in silent prayer.
Belladona hmms and shakes her head, "I don't think we should burn it, first of all we are in Dragonier, anything burning will attract attention. We got what we came here for so let's just leave."
"We haven't the time to build tombs for the dead or bury them," Oliver points out softly. "Attention or no, we don't want those ... things that once were like us ... coming back and maybe going for someone who is ill-equipped to take them on..."
Stjepan nods. "Give them to the sky. By the time something finds this, we'll be gone."
"The Spirits must be put rest." Charis states firmly. "The people burn the dead. It is our way."
"We are burning it" Yngvild declares, her loud voice hardening as she looks over and down to Beladonna "We can take the risk to put the dead to rest and rid the world of that unnatural place of horror" she adds with a nod to the others.
<OOC> Faiza says, "Would the flames spreading from Faiza's sword also be silver? It's just a special FX thing because the Flaming effect is divinely granted by Eluna, but..." <OOC> Jessamy says, "Sure, if you like ^^" <OOC> Jessamy says, "OK, can we go ahead and close?" <OOC> Oliver says, "Kewl." <OOC> Faiza will set the fire with that, then. Cleansing holy fire, etc. <OOC> Oliver nods. <OOC> Charis says, "Hey I got to set nothing on fire! My job!"
It takes time and effort to set up putting the place to the torch, but by the time the group leaves, the fires are beginning to lick tongues of silver flame up to the sky. When all is said and done, little more than scorched stone will be left behind between the efforts of Oliver, Faiza, and Charis.
As you are leaving, that's about when Faiza's voice comes back to her, slowly at first and then all at once.
