- Title: What you see in the mirror
- Emitter: Delilah
- Characters: Delilah, Donna, Ashes, Elyanna
- Place: Underground: Magus Ectra Na'Garra's Manse
- Time: Monday, August 02, 2021, 8:59 PM
- Summary: The Valethor gang recuperate after the battle with Brutus and explore Ectra's laboratory. Lerethil the Looter, fulfilling the undesired role of 'thief' in the party continues to be a nuisance touching and breaking things, despite being warned that the area is heavily magical, likely trapped, and still dangerous. Ashes, in particular, points out a mirror to her to be avoided. Lerethil helpfully suggests that Ectra's library, her life's work, should not be destroyed in case there's some evidence in it that would clear Delilah. Some note regarding an elaborate plan to frame an adventurer twenty years after her death to cause a complicated chain of events to bring them to her manse, perhaps. Unlikely. Across a bridge over a chasm, a book is held by a statue-pedestal and the gang decides to get this first. Donna attempts to grab it with a blood rager specialty, and barely manages to, although the book is flung across the room and the statue retains a few pages. Donna is befuddled, but protected from mind control by Ash's spell. In the confusion after, Lerethil looks in the mirror, then pushes Delilah into it, and when confronted explains that it was all part of a deal with Ectra, just business, and she knew how the mirror worked all along, but oopsie, you can't kill me now Ectra's in there with Delilah. Unwilling to take further advice from the betrayer, Ashes and Donna grab Lerethil to shove her in after the golden twin so they can start playing the two men enter one man... rrr the one in equals one out game, which presumably has some first in first out rules aspects to be determined.

The dust is still settling after the battle with Brutus, the colossal abomination that lays where it has been felled, albeit still twitching. Death may take some time to finally stick -- and it would be for the second time, given that the creature was clearly created from stitched together corpses. Now that the din of battle has subsided, Lerethil pokes her head back in. "Oh wow, none of you area dead? After fighting *that*?" She wanders in, and spares a glance towards her pile of treasures which... now needs to be reassembled. "Well, you managed not to break any of the paintings, so that--"
"Shut up," states Delilah, who then turns her attention back to the group. "So... who here thinks the lab is safe, now? Because I--"
"I'ts not." Poppy peeks in from the wall where she'd hidden herself. "And I still have no idea what else is in there, but it's got all of Ectra's experiments and she was really, really keen on undead things. So there's probably more." She pauses, and shrugs. "Probably only one Brutus though."
Ashes is looking down at the form of Brutus, she glances up, then around, "There is probably a manual." A glance at Lerethil, "That we need to destroy."
She steps around Brutus, touching the holy symbol on her breastplate, "Feiu of the Tears, let me see."
She carefully scans the room, her eyes glowing, "I can check for undead... but it doesn't always find... those."
"CAN YOU--" Donna starts as Lerethil pipes up, subsiding for her sister as she takes long, slow deep breaths, trying to get her muscles to calm from the exertion she'd put them through. She quells a bit further, listening to Poppy's brief, and just rakes a hand through her hair. "--fucking not...? Okay. More's comin'. Gimme a sec, then I'll be ready t'shove my face innit." A hand rises to cover the Keeper's face for a moment, before turning toward massaging the bridge of her nose.
As it turns, then, to recapping her waterskin, Elyanna inquires, "Are we in good enough condition to wade into what could be several more hostiles just now?"
She glances at the Merchant, then turns her attention to the sisters, though Ashes's preemptive sweep curtails any observations she'd make in their direction. Still, she's had her 'breather' and, in the wake of the pummeling Donna endured, she secures her skin and pushes to her feet, readying her weapons for the possibility of more incoming and takes position by the door whence the juggernaut had come.
There aren't ... currently detect any active undead. Except Poppy.
The place is full of magic. There's a lot coming off of the floating island itself, which makes other things hard to pick out, but the lab definitely has stuff going on.
"This place is full of magic." Ashes says, pointing out spots that appear to be everywhere, "the floating island, some of those other places. It's all layering."
"Poppy is the only true undead here."
"You all look like you could keep go--"
"Shut up," Delilah repeats, and pinches the bridge of her nose. "Lerethil, seriously. I know you probably think it's easy, but seriously, getting pounded on by abominations isn't our idea of fun, and watching it happen to my friends and my sister is even worse, so please just give us a minute, okay?" She shakes her head. "Also, Donna need a few minutes after a fight, she pushes herself pretty hard to do what she does."
Poppy, meanwhile, leans further into the room and hugs her arms around herself. "I..." She blushes, and looks down at her toes. "I don't want to be undead any more," she mumbles. "If you really can restore me to life, I don't know how I'd ever thank you. I really never got to live before. Please, please be really careful in the lab."
"Hey... don't you worry, Poppy," Donna pants, managing a smile around her momentary exhaustion. "We ain't got time... to get too laid up... we got promises t'keep. An' I got a murderin... lyin... manipulatin' harpy of a mage t'throttle--" somehow, the search for proper invective seems to help the brawler recover, and she sits much straighter by the end of the diatribe. "--so we're all walkin' out of here, an' you're *definitely* comin' with."
"We'll find a way, Poppy," Ashlee promises. She can think of a few, although they are very trying methods.
She looks at Donna, seeing the improvement that comes with the invective. "When you're ready Donna."
"Start at the outside, check to the table in the middle?" The ashen Arvec suggests.
"Most of my Keeper's tricks are spent." Elyanna notes, "I still have some magic left to me, but only one potentially damaging spell that is.." she glances over her shoulder as she fishes for a word, "Indiscriminate, and sort range." She rolls her wrist a little, then her shoulders, like a prize fighter trying to limber up for an imminent match, but she doesn't seem quite as spry as she had before the fight.
To Poppy, "It can be done." she notes, then, looking forward into the hall to make sure nothing surprises them, chin dipping a touch, "New lives can be... overwhelming, sometimes, but you will not be alone."
"Yup," Donna says, hopping to her feet-- and swaying for a moment, then shaking her head. "Think I'm good. Elyanna, think you could give 'em trouble from over my shoulder? If there's more gribblies inside, then I'll block the door an' keep 'em off y'all."
Elyanna considers that for a moment or two, "I can reach around you with Maidenhead, of course, but..." she gives the brawler a once over, "Are you.... ready to take the front, again?"
Ashlee checks the others, everyone seems as recovered as they're going to be. She points out the areas of high magic, "Donna, check there. We'll back you up."
"Delilah, be ready."
"Sooner we get done, sooner we get gone," Donna answers, giving Elyanna a wry smirk. "I'm as ready as I'm'a get, an' I'm literally gonna have my friends at my back. I'm good."
Following Ashes' indications, the brawler nods once, then tilts her head to one side, then the other, producing a truly impressive series of popping sounds. "Aight," she says, bouncing twice on her toes, then striding toward the doorway. "Let's see who else got a fuckin' problem."
Elyanna gives a nod, then, with some reticence, eases aside to let Donna take the lead before falling in behind her. She tests the heft of her buckler, while Maidenhead is held coiled in her other hand. She glances about, in case her hobkin eyes can pry deeper secrets from the shadows than Donna's human peepers.
The splintered ruin of the door to the laboratory awaits; beyond it is dark. Impossibly so, as it turns out; walking through the door requires passing into a tunnel of absolute blackness, where one can only find their way by feel through a large passageway (large enough for Brutus, at least).
Fortunately, the darkness ends after about ten feet; and beyond is an expansive hall, carved into the island itself. Mage lights in sconces flare to life as the first person enters, illuminating the room in a dim, bluish haze and the air carries a smokey, acrid quality, making it feel like it's really underwater.
Scattered about the room are workbenches, littered with a vast array of alchemical apparatuses. Several open bottles still have chemicals in them, a couple of which are constantly smoldering, perhaps accounting for the hazey quality of the air. Along the sides of the hall are shelves, stocked generously with reagents, artifacts, samples of everything imaginable, and body parts. Name an organ, and you can almost certainly find several in jars, with notes that read in a cold, clinical fashion.
- Brain -- halfling female age 29
- Lung -- orc male age 53
- Liver -- unicorn male age indeterminate
- Eyeballs -- various
And so on the collection continues. Other curiosities abound, such as a six foot tall mirror suspended like a pendulum from the ceiling by a single, heavy golden chain.
Arrayed on one of the tables is a skeleton, the flesh long since rotted away, but still surrounded by gleaming, sharp medical tools of all manner, and fingernail marks are still visible in the metal surface of the table. Standing amongst the workspaces are several tall, glass tubes; each is filled with liquid, and each contains the body of some human or humanoid specimen, all with their jaws slack and their eyes rolled up in their sockets.
Towards the far end of the hall, the floor falls away, leaving a precarious drop. A single stone bridge leads to a circular platform, that is bordered all the way around by tall shelves, that bow under the weight of books. A lectern stands in the middle; a statue in the form of a chained woman holding the last book Ectra had open before she died. A tome that is well preserved.
The mirror is quite magic. This will be important later.
Ashlee stares, her eyes wide, her face expressionless, a shocked skull that looks around, and around. And around.
"I wish I'd brought more bags." She stares curiously at the Unicorn Liver, that's unexpected. The less prosaic parts are still unsettling. The bridge and the bookshelves get her attention, "We should burn those."
The tubes, the dead, the laboratory. It's not that she hasn't encountered things like these, but the circumstance and location are... unique to say the least.
"The mirror is magic. Looking in it might be bad."
"Seein' a *lot* of things that oughta be burnt," Donna murmurs, eyes raking over every available place and item in the laboratory... and carefully *not* the reflective surface of the mirror. "An' anyone else think that book looks like just the *best* way to pitch a curious looter into freefall?"
Elyanna considers the decor with some reproach. The entire project reeks of impotent power, and fear. The Witches in Bludgun had hobbies, too, and, some probably included such cheating the Fieu sort of research within their limits. She'd never actually endured th company of such hags, not in their wallows, anyway.
She steers her gaze from the mirror on Ashes's warning and ventures toward the bridge to get a better gander of the circumstances, thumb stroking the braided tresses of Maidenhead as she tries to do some math...
"Don't be burning anything just yet," Lerethil declares, as she follows the adventurers into the laboratory. "Remember. You said you would only burn things that relate directly to necromancy, so you should make sure that that's what you're setting fire to." She pauses, and smiles, "And besides, you're hoping to find evidence to help Delilah not be on the hook for having her head chopped off. You wouldn't want to burn that by accident."
Delilah, for her part, just... stares at the merchant as the half-elf walks past her, and saunters on past the mirror and heads for the shelves. Whereupon she starts looking at the various curiosities, pausing once to look at the unicorn liver. "...Bet that's worth a fortune," she observes, and continues on.
"...It's like she's just *beggin'* to get a punch in the mouth," Donna sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Like she just *hates* how her face looks, an' just keeps tryin' to find ways to get people t'rearrange it for her..."
Ambling up next to Elyanna, the brawler looks from book, to whip in the hobkin's hand, and back again. "...Math workin' out?"
"She could look in the mirror." Ashlee suggests practically, summarizing the situation, "We'd be the same strength and best able to counter-act it."
"Plus, Ectra would be pissed." The Mourner says, guessing Lerenthil would not top the choices of vessel for the slug-mage. A little thin... in places.
She joins Elyanna and Donna looking across the bridge. "Merek would use fireball here."
She's not necessarily advocating that. Not without a smoke first. Tapping at her satchel strap, she looks around a little more. "I don't know where to start."
Elyanna sighs a low growl through her nose, though wether it's in reaction to Lerethil's mouth noises, or the particular ranges she's considering is anyone's guess. She looks over her shoulder at Donna on her remark, a notable f subdued quirk of amusement quirking her lips at the corners, then, "I can likely snatch the book from the lecturn from well out of the reach of arms, just not from this range. Well enough to evade some traps, as they may be, but I would not be able to disable any trick devices in play."
Under her breath, as Ashlee draws up alongside, "She is too comfortable in this place." the Keeper whispers, then more loudly, "If there is a dropoff, perhaps I can tether to one of the supports, just in case."
Delilah glances back and forth between Donna, Ashes, and Elyanna. "That'd mean walking out onto the bridge," she points out. "Which might also be trapped. On the plus side, any traps that Ectra had protecting her prized encyclopedia necromantic is probably not going to be of the sort that disintegrates, electrocutes, burns, water damages, or otherwise ruins books. I mean..." she gestures towards the small library, "That's her life's work there, she's not going to risk cooking it because a slave got suicidal."
Lerethil, meanwhile, has found something to tinker with; something she fumbles and drops, and with the sound of smashing glass, the jar of eyeballs has spewed its contents.
"...That is so gross," the half-elf declares.
"...I'll get it," Delilah grumbles, and the golden haired sorceress stalks purposefully over to where Lerethil is making a mess. "Okay so look. Honey. If you could please not break things that might kill us, that'd be great."
"...We could refuse to set the place on fire until she's mopped it?" Donna suggests, then frowns. "'Cept then she'd just take her shit an' go, an' we'd have to walk. Hrn." Sucking on a tooth for a moment, the dark twin looks down at her hands, then to the lectern, one eyebrow rising. "...Actually, I think I can get it, without steppin' foot on the bridge. Anyone got a good reason for me not to?"
"I can't think of one." Ashlee confirms, staring across the bridge. "It's all magic, it will be a problem no matter what we do." "Perhaps." Elyanna concedes to Delilah, "But if Poppy was her only slave, and the room discouraged her from venturing about, she may be worried about warmer hands."
She looks to Donna on her query, no small curiosity alight in her gaze, "Aside from some sort of contact trap, something... conducting, no. What do you propose?"
"Reach out an' grab it," Donna says, shrugging. "Got a spell sees use when I need to stop someone runnin' off, ain't *that* much different from you usin' your whip. 'Cept, y'know, my *hands* at the end of it, so..."
"I'll be ready with a Protection from Evil." Ashlee says, "Unless you'd like it before you try."
"Probably best to have it up and going, first." Elyanna advises, "If something goes amiss, we may not have time to cast reactively." She glances over to see what the merchant is up to, then back to the others, "Is there anything you need me to do?"

The ashen Arvec nods, touching her breastplate, and speaks in a dead monotone. "Feiu of the Tears, protect this one from the foolishness she's about to do."
Ashlee raises her head, giving Donna a look. She does not smile, but her tiny fangs are very visible.

"Have that whip ready in case somethin' hauls me over?" Donna hazards, bobbing her head at Ashlee's efforts to safeguard her will. "Damn straight," she says in agreement, rolling her shoulder. "Can't learn from your stupid if y'ain't alive t'learn."
Passing her left hand down the lingth of her right arm, the brawler whispers a set of brain-cramping syllables. "Here we go..."
Her arm *wibbles* oddly as she rears back, as if flesh and bone had been transmuted into some species of rubber... And when she lunches the arm forward, it moves in a manner that can only be called 'thlabber,' the gauntletted hand arrowing toward the lectern, trailing a faintly rippling streamer of rubberized meats connecting to her shoulder.
Elyanna nods and allows Maidenhead to unspool to the floor behind her as she plants her feet and torque's slightly at the waist in preparation to cast the weapon as a lifeline should need arise. The effect of Donna's spell brings a brow up, but she stands ready....
"HA! GOTCHHhhhshitfuck."
The moment Donna's hand closes around the book, she... it can't quite be called a flinch, because a flinch is a small reaction away from perceived danger. It can't quite be said to reel either, because reeling implies stumbling backward away, and her feet remain planted to the ground. The backwards full-body jerk she *does* show, however, has the helpful side effect of hauling her stretchy arm back with book in hand... which goes sailing back over her head as her grip goes slack, and Donna starts blinking slowly, as if trying poorly to clear the aftereffects of a bright flash in her eyeballs, heedless of the book's trajectory.
If there's any justice in the universe however, it's gonna crack right into Lerethil's temple. We can but hope.
Ashlee steps out of the way of the book. She wasn't expecting that, exactly, but she was expecting something. Her head turns to watch the trajectory, before swiveling back to Donna. She puts a hand on her shoulder. The appearance of a skeletal touch is always comforting, even it it's only a tattoo. "Stay with us."
The pedestal gets another waried examination, where the Mourner is attempting to look past Ectra's lewd choices in pose and determine if the particular configuration of limbs and chains might hide something else, a discrete summoning circle, or a crossbow trap. Who knows.
Elyanna moves to try and take Donna into her arms as she recoils from the lectern and launches the book back yonderly, "Donna!"
She looks to Ashes as she moves also to see to her and.... look over toward the vacant podium anew, "Are you alright?"
Once preparations are complete, Donna's attempt to stretch her arms all the way across the bridge and snatch the book from the lectern's hands bears fruit. The brawler can feel the statue animate the moment her hands touch the large tome, and the statue's hands snatch at the book, wielding considerable strength as it tries to keep its prize. Donna's efforts prove overpowering, however; and the lectern is able only to tear a couple of pages free as it loses the rest of it.
What follows is an ear-piercing shriek, as the statue wails at a pitch that would make an opera singer ashamed of themselves. "THIEVES!" it screams. "THIEVES! MISTRESS ECTRA! *THIEVES*!!
Meanwhile, inside Donna's brain something else is happening; while she's touching the book it's as though a hand is gripping around the contents of her skull and squeezing. All while Ectra's voice hisses to her, "Listen... LISTEN. Heed me. You are mine now. Mine. Mine. MINE. You will-- you will---!!"
The voice fades again, but Donna is left sitting on the floor, probably drooling a little bit as well.
The book goes flying past Ashes and Elyanna, and lands near the glass tubes; and the thump of it landing gets a look from Lerethil. "Oh, you got it," she muses, and departs directly to head for it. "I--"
The half-elf merchant trails off as she happens to catch a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror; a reflection that, should anyone else catch it, shows her resplendent in silks and gold, decked out like an empress. She stares at the mirror for a moment, until Delilah catches up with her and gives her a gentle push.
"Stay away from the mir--"
Delilah is caught wholly off-guard, as Lerethil turns around and grabs the golden-haired sorceress by the arm and hauls her forwards, pushing her up against the mirror. Delilah barely has time to suck in her breath as the glass ripples around her, and she stumbles straight through the glass, which snaps back to being smooth and flat behind her.
While Lerethil stumbles back from the mirror, trips and falls on her backside, Delilah is now inside the mirror, looking out; she hammers her fist against the mirror, but no sound comes out.
"...I... What just happened?" whispers Lerethil.
"'M fine," Donna mumbles, staring into the middle distance. "Fuckin' why we overnightin' in Theater District D... Too noisy to get any sleep around here...
"Get her out." Ashlee marches up to Lerethil, in this moment all her military training showing. She is an intimidating cavalry officer in heavy armour that does not smile. Ever. Her voice remains even, flat, an unsettling characteristic. The hobgoblin is clearly ... angry, even if no upset shows. She points at the reflective surface, "Or get out."
As to what happened, that is a good question. Ashlee ponders her arcane understandings, things she was taught about magic items and magic traps. Information sadly lacking for such elaborate enchantments.
She delivers a judgement, "I didn't realize you were a goblin."
"That would be..." Elyanna grumbles as Donna's think meats enjoy a rasberry marinade, and she eases the brawler away from the precipice and tries to gently sit her down, "Here, ease down and get your wind back, you have had a long night."
There's a look to the podium, the pages in hand as it screeches after it's absent Mistress, then looks over to where Ashes stomped off to.
Oh.
From back in the cheering section, there's the crack of a whip, and the Keeper starts to move in the Mourner's wake.
It seems, like her fullblooded friend, she currently doesn't have a sense of humor she's aware of.

Lerethil... does not appear to be entirely truthful.
Donna will find her head slowly clearing; but it's going to take a couple of minutes yet. Still, even in her current state, she can probably clue in that something is amiss; Ashes and Elyanna have stomped off, Lerethil is sitting on the floor, and Delilah is nowhere to be seen.
"...I can't," Lerethil replies, standing up and dusting herself off from sitting on the floor. "I don't know how it works. But when I saw it, I wasn't... thinking properly, and when Delilah interrupted me I pushed her towards it before I knew what I was doing."
Delilah meanwhile is beating her fist on the inside of the mirror, all without creating a sound; probably she's shouting at the top of her lungs as well, though so far that's not having any effect either.
"You are lying." Ashlee states bluntly, standing ramrod straight, using her height as she stares down at Lerethil on the floor. "You stayed away when there was a threat, then touch everything here when we warn it's dangerous."
She glances to her side, at Elyanna, searching for confirmation of her suspicions in her expression. She doesn't find any, but there was that whispered caution earlier. "You know more than you let on."
She's silent once more, finally adding, "The Blar army beheads betrayal. I don't know if you're more dangerous in this room where we can see you, or where we can't."
The third option unstated; solve her the military way.
GAME: Ashes rolls intimidate: (3)+0: 3
Which seems like something she'd never do.
The Keeper doesn't seem sure what to think, but, she's taken to a certain level of trust in the Mourner, and she looks at the merchant and amends, "You can answer her, or you can answer me."
Maidenhead writhes at Elyanna's side as she idly adjusts her grip on her hilt, "In Bludgun, traitors tend to become rather spirited public spectacles, or the personal hobbies of witches, and Keepers between caravans."
"Fucking... what... my head..." Weaving where she sits, Donna presses both hands against the side of her skull, as though to smash it herself. "Fuck off you... Got shit to do, I... But what..." Turning left, then right, she finally catches familiar hobkin out of the corner of her eye, then squeezes her eyes shut against the hammer pounding the inside of her head. "What's happenin'? What..."
Lerehil doesn't seem overly much impressed by Ashes' attempts to threaten her into submission, and is about to come up with some sort of retort when Elyanna adds her voice -- and threat -- to the mix. This makes the merchant backpedal until she runs into the workbench with the skeleton on it; she looks over her shoulder, gasps, and then looks back to the Keeper.
"Now now, hold on a minute," she protests, speaking rapidly. "Okay, look. It's a mirror that entices you, but that's... it's not really a mirror at all. Not how Ectra explained it to me, anyway. It's a doorway. But it goes both ways. It *has* to go both ways. You need someone to go in, so someone else can come out." She pauses, and shrugs. "Delilah went in. So now Ectra can come out."
"What?!"
Uh-oh. Apparently Donna heard that last bit.
"Back up a sec... *WHAT?!*"
Whatever difficulties Donna was having seem to have been shaken off, now, and te brawler surges to her feet, rounding on Lerethil. "...You wanna say that again in words that *don't* make me wanna see what happens when I throw you at that thing?"
"I see." Ashes says, "So you've delivered more brains to Ectra. And freed her from death. And knew all about this and didn't share."
"Perhaps explain how you haven't betrayed us before we throw you down that pit."
The ashen Arvec is ready to grab her if she runs. Pushing her into the mirror to free Delilah is top of Ash's experiment list.
Cold steel pools turn glacial as carmine eyelids narrow around them as the Keeper tenses some in expectation Lerethil gets squirrely, "I can make it much more interesting than that. There are close enough tools for my ends."
She steps closer and to the side slightly to allay thoughts of escape routes while Maidenhead's hilt creaks in her grip, "Speak quickly."
"I, wait," Lerethil replies, speaking in a rush. She steps to the side, feeling along the workbench until she reaches the end, and then darts around to stand on the other side of it. "I need you to know it wasn't anything personal. It was business. I had a business arrangement with Ectra, and I kept it. She already gave me her end and I couldn't afford for her to undo it, what she gave me was far too important, and I didn't... I didn't think this would ever actually *happen*. But..." She sucks in her breath, "Before you decide to torture me, you should... think about that."
Lerethil lifts one hand to point towards the mirror; and now, Delilah is flailing her hands against the inside of it in a mad, desperate panic. Suddenly, she is no longer alone, inside the confines of the mirror.
Ectra is in there with her.
"Throw her in, get Delilah out. Deal with Ectra second." Ashlee says, moving to grab Lerethil and shove her towards the mirror.
"FEELS PRETTY FUCKIN' PERSONAL TO ME," Donna says through gritted teeth, "And if I have to dive in there buddy you *will* be sorry."
Hurling herself forward, Donna reaches out to grab another bit of Lerethil, to put some spice on the merchant's journey toward the mirror.
Rarely one to buck a good trend, Elyanna snaps a quick, "Noted." to the merchant, then to her friends, "Handle it." and she starts to move toward the Mirror herself, either to try and leap in after Delilah or to get ready to break something...
