  • Title: Wasps of Unusual Size, part 1
  • Emitter: Cryosanthia
  • Characters: Rocky, Katsuro, Jaen, Bannon
  • Place: PRTwo: Wilderness near Fewood
  • Time: Sunday, July 19, 2020, 8:07 PM
  • Summary: The adventuring party is hired to explore the forests around Mictlan and the Druid Grove, looking for a lost scout as well as mapping any changes in the Felwood now that Salina's Plague Oozes are gone. The group explores some game trails, eventually finding tracks and a large number of bees. These are unsettling, until further travel beings the party into an area without them, and a horse-sized wasp. They discover the giant wasp near a strange clearing, battle ensues, and they defeat it. There is a strong possibility the lost scout is involved, so they track it back to a hive. Several giant wasps are living in a cave in a hill, and some exploration reveals that there might be other ways in, if one is halfling size. The party arranges an ambush, and Rocky attempts to look like a succulent morsel to tempt the wasp away from it's guard position. This fails, and while the party quickly dispatches the guard, they have awakened the hive.

There are several postings at the Explorer's Guild for some wilderness exploration, all on behalf of Mictlan and the Green Wardens. The contact is a sith-makar a Wilderness Pointe. Sometimes it is an ebon-scaled one, other times a white-scaled, though the assignments are typically identical. Explore various trails, update a map, see if the Plague-ooze corruption has receeded and whether the Felwood has with it, or is growing.

And rescue any previous scouts who haven't come back, and there are a couple of those.

It's a good half-day of travel to the muster point, to receive mapping equipment and an area to investigate, then another hour or two to get there. This particular assignment was given by the white-scale, who said earlier reports describe the area as normal, but one scout hasn't returned. She gave out a blessing and mapping equipment, and the party has left the main trail behind them, and is exploring a smaller game trail. So far, it's light forest and moderate underbrush, with a wind rustling through the leaves and the sounds of small animals.

Rocky was returning from this area not so long ago, having spent some time at Mictlan, but is content enough to travel out again. The massive sith is no woodsman, but moves though the wilds with relitive familiarity, having at least the basics of wilderness survival down. Long term survival may prove more difficult.

Katsuro has changed his clothes, and now wears all shades of green, so that he will, with luck, be harder to see in the jungle. Green cloak, dark wool, green pants and heavy shirt, with a heavy leather vest overtop. He wears a shortsword at his side as he approaches the muster point, but he's a city boy and doesn't know much about the wilderness save that he's not very comfortable there. He looks around thoughtfully to try and work out where he's expected to be.

Jaen has had minimal contact with the Explorer's Guild directly, though is aware of their existence. The recent changes in the wilds, though, he's much more keenly aware of. A plague in another land and time past swept clean all that he knew. Another that seems, or seemed, even more insidious, is both terrifying and infuriating. First one home and now another is threatened? This might explain the curl to his lip that is far more sneer or snarl than smirk or grin. This land he is familiar with... scribbles on cloth or reeds less so.

Rocky is a few hundred pounds of lizard wrapped in heavy metal. 'Stealth' is not an option. Tend towards slow careful movement, but perfectly able to speed up when needed.

Whereas some have switched to the muted greens and browns of the forest, Bannon has elected to stick with his brightly colored and flashy clothing. It seems if he's to be mistakenly shot by a hunter today, it's going to be due to that hunter hunting something brightly colored or political intrigue. He is contantly on the lookout, his head swiveling to look at this or that as he walks along with a rolling gait.

There are humanoid tracks on this trail. They look at least a day old, moving at an exploring pace, not slowly and not rushed. By the shape and impression, Jaen suspects a Wild-Elf, by associated scent, Rocky suspects something Sildanyari or half-sil, and smelling of the wild.

The small game path winds along, the path compacted dirt with a decaying cover of leaves that is sparse. Bushes on either side occasionally reach a thin branch across, but the undergrowth is sparse as well, with many gaps where ground can be seen. It looks slippery in places, but otherwise sound footing. The trees for the most part are saplings or a little further along. Most trunks can be encircled with both hands, a few are larger.

GAME: Bannon rolls Sense Motive: (17)+9: 26

There are a lot of bees. Big, fat bumble bees and smaller honey-bees, doing their thing. Occasionally one is close enough the swashbuckler can hear the buzz. There is enough for a dangerous swarm, but they look harmless.

Katsuro is attempting to remain, if not unseen, at least low key. He's definitely not the big threat here. That's what his body language conveys, at any rate. He's here to help, and to make some coin. Life isn't free. And he feels he's laid low long enough that few will suspect anything untoward.

Rocky moves slowly, swithcing between watching the ground for tracks, and the surroundings for danger. Pausing, the sith takes a slow breath, motioning to some disturbed leaves. "Tracks, maybe day old. This One thinks elf, but is not certain."

Jaen moves in a low crouch along the game path, more for stability and habit than attempt at stealth. Impressions in the ground and disturbed undergrowth are inspected, and even sniffed at (though his nose knows no better than one would expect). "Sylvanori," he adds, and confirms to the sith-makar with a nod. Possibly in syldanyari, as one's official name for one's own people would likely be in one's own tongue.

Bannon glances around, a frown settling on his face as he comments, "There are a lot of bees around here." The dusky skinned Tsuran man frowns, "We don't get this in the city very much." Something about his general demeanor intimates that maybe he doesn't like it out here so much. The airman seems grumpy, but falls just short of pouting.

The tracks are obvious to the two who spotted them, and can be followed. They lead deeper, occasionally there are places where it seems the scout turned to look in several directions, crouched to examine something, or left the trail for a couple dozen feet and then returned. They continue onwards from from these stopping points.

There are also, once Bannon points them out, a lot of bees. They seem oblivious to the adventurers and focused on the flowers. Crawling into them, collecting pollen, flying off. At least one of the places the scout explored was in a similar direction. There's nothing obvious on the trail though, like a piece of broken honeycomb.

Moving further along the trail, a half hour's travel, doesn't have an impact on the number of bees. There still seem to be a lot about.

Rocky makes note of the insects with casual intrest, no little concern. Rock hide is thicker than most stingers. Most.

Bees would mean honey, which would be a welcome treat... if one were careful enough and timed the taking well. Jaen doesn't think that now is the time for either, though, and continues after the trail of the scout before them. The pollen-collecting bees are left behind. They can always gather some honeycomb later.

Katsuro will follow the people who know about following tracks. He can't do much to help them, he's a city boy, so he stays out of the way. Out of sight, out of mind, that's his plan, and so he moves quietly as he can through the foresty terrain.

The tracks get a little harder to follow, but the barbarian is able to pick them up every time they are lost. At some point, the rogue is lost in the bushes, the lowered light levels make his clothing blend and he's so quiet the party can't see him unless he speaks.

The concentration of bees fades rather abruptly, almost as if a line was drawn. There are a bunch of them on flowers, and then even though there is a similar bush a few feet away, its absolutely untouched. It's like this for several minutes along the trail, the bees are completely absent. At this point, the tracks leave the trail and head into the scrub. One way tracks are always a dangerous sign, there's usually something unpleasant to be found at the end of them. This time is no different. In a small clearing, there's a silvered circle-knife on the ground. The dirt seems curiously swept outwards, as if there was a small explosion centered on the knife, but there is no char marks or burn scents. There are the scout's footprints, mixed with what seem to be wolf prints and blood droplets that show the same strange radial spread patterns.

Are one's eyes playing tricks? It seemed a wasp flew in front of the face. Except, its body is somehow blocked by trees.

Rocky chuffs softly. "Magic of some sort, but This one is no shaman. Such things are not of my teachings."

GAME: Jaen rolls knowledge/nature: (15)+6: 21

Katsuro is not immediately aware that his companions have lost sight of him, making the handsign for Danger! and then swatting at something that cannot quite be seen by his face. Then just behind his head. He looks around warily, falling still at Rocky's declaration. Magic, that would do it. But it's not something he can do anything about, so it must be endured.

The dropped weapon is never a good sign. No other sign of the bearer could be better news... or much worse. He blinks at the flitting insect that seems both here and there. "Magic." That seems to be the catch-all for everything... though that doesn't mean it was outside or harmful magic. "The scout... maybe changed? Same one, different tracks?" There are woodscraft means of attempting to leave false trails, though magic would surely do so more effectively.

Bannon continues on behind Rocky and Jaen, his lips trending downward in an ever-more douring expression, "That's really not good." There is a pause where the airman reaches up to adjust his hat, before his head tilts sharply, "Does anyone hear that?" For indeed, the low buzz of the bees seems to be getting louder and louder.

It's suddenly very clear what the optical illusion, the buzzing, and the cause of the strange dirt-sweeping is. It's a wasp. On first glance it seems like it must be very close, right in front of the eyes, it appears so large. Except it is actually large. The yellow and black are unmistakable, it's wasp. And, it's the size of a horse.

And it's coming back to the blood spattered clearing for more meals. Every picnic gets some wasps, and this time the picnic is you.

GAME: Bannon rolls 1d20+8: (1)+8: 9 (EPIC FAIL)

As the large wasp makes its arrival, Bannon's eyes widen and he stops in his tracks. Reaches down with his left hand, Bannon takes a dagger from the sheath on his leg. He reaches back and launches the knife at the huge insect. Unfortunately for him, his buckler catches the edge of the knife, sending it spinning off sideways.

GAME: Rocky rolls intimidate: (1)+7: 8 (EPIC FAIL)

Rocky peers a long moment at the giant insect. "...huh." While not exactly unfaimilar, this giant bug is a bit more sizable than he's used to. Moving forward, the warrior raises his shield and blade. "ROA-*kaaack!* *cough!* Gah!" The sith accidentally inhaled a leaf.

Rocky is not used to being overlooked, but is content with the result, swinging his large blade and slicing through carapace to send bits and ichor flying.

GAME: Cryosanthia rolls 1d20+6: (3)+6: 9

The horse-sized wasp buzzes through the trees like they were grass. Its wings blasting a downwards airspray that flutters leaves to either side. It's low, and something that large shouldn't be flying, yet it does.

It is knocked off course as it passes the boulder-that-is-really a sith-makar, his axe-blade biting deep, sliding along the carapace and severing a couple legs. Perhaps this is enough to throw it off. It curls its abdomen so its stinger points forward then stabs at Bannon. The sword-like stinger flicks, but misses the intended target.

The small clearing is about 10' wide, with Bannon and Jaen in it, and the giant wasp just at the edge. Katsuro is in the bushes, at least 10' away.

GAME: Jaen RAGES!, gaining +2 to melee attack/damage/Will saves and 6 temporary HP
GAME: Jaen rolls finesse+2: (1)+7+2: 10 (EPIC FAIL)

That is ... just not right. Jaen has never been to Am'shere, where such things may be normal, so, in his mind, this is a Thing That Should Not Be. With a snarl, his ties to the wild grow and take hold, canines extending and nails growing into stronger and sharper claws. He darts to the obviously unnatural insect and slashes at ...where it used to be.

GAME: Katsuro rolls 1d20+7: (6)+7: 13

Katsuro advances surreptitously, and he seems to be intending to hurl a weapon, but thinks better of it, and instead sidles closer, and those who understand tactical movement will see he's attempting to come up behind the wasp. He's no fighter, but he draws his narrow-bladed shortsword as he closes. He attempts to slash the flying creature, but cannot keep up with its flitting movements.

The giant wasp bobs in place like an existential nightmare. It's huge, with giant compound eyes, a very loud buzz and a dangerous stinger. It thrusts at Bannon again, and misses.

Now that the wasp that seemed in his face is actually in his face, Jaen curls his hands to dig both sets of freshly-grown claws into it. Their piercing of chitin, and it being in his face, gives him the leverage and positioning to... is he really going to... yes. He bites into it and then strains, separating it into the three body segments of an insect: left of left claw, right of right claw, and bitten in jaw.

The wasp falls to the ground, in pieces. It's head bouncing in the dirt. The fluids that insects use for blood leak out of the carapace, it's been rendered into sections.

Rocky sputters a little, clearing out the last of the inhaled leaf, and peers around. "...do such things live alone? Home, tends to be whole hive. Perhaps is good time to take what has been found, and leave."

Katsuro winces at Jaen's savagery, looking away quickly. Ostensibly to look for ... clues, yes. That's it. "Got to be clues here, right?" He'll look for clues. Facing away from the elf. He can only shrug to Rocky.

Bannon is already lining up his next attack as the wasp falls, sucking in deep breaths with raging eyes as he eyes whats left of the wasp on the ground. He takes a look around, his expression slowly returning to neutrality as he looks towards Rocky and shakes his head, "Don't know, but I won't be puttin' my sword away." He then immediately looks towards Katsuro and nods his head, "Must be."

GAME: Jaen rolls knowledge/nature: (14)+6: 20

Jaen wipes his mouth with the worn leather on the back of his hand. He's not a complete savage... or wasp really doesn't taste very good. He takes a few heaving breaths as he also looks around. "Never seen before." Still, it may have some traits in common with their smaller cousins. There may be more, there may not be, but there is still the scout to find or ground to check.

Wasps live in all sorts of things, depending on the kind of wasp, but the giant variety has a 'small' nest that holds around a dozen of these. Since they're horse-sized, it's usually 'small barn' sized, usually a cave or an abandonned building.

Jaen adds, "Could make nest in cave. Too big for trees, or to build nest." His Tradespeak is far from eloquent, though he could also be distracted as he aids the sith in trying to regain the trail.

GAME: Rocky rolls survival: (7)+5: 12

Rocky isn't exactly fluent in TradeSpeak himself, but nods. "Likely just one then. Should track, try and find scout who came before. Is little hope, but still some."

It's an unusual trail, but not a difficult one to follow even though it goes through the scrub. The wings of the wasp move a lot of air, and that blasts a little trail through the rotting leaves making it quite obvious where it went. Over a hill, down a small incline and there is an obvious crack in the hillside which is large enough for a horse to fly through.

Another giant wasp hovering around out in front of it makes it clear this is the place. At the current distance, it hasn't spotted the party. There are some options for approach. From behind has more cover, but also a drop. Approaching from the front or sides is roughly the same, although there's a slope when it isn't direct. There also might be another entrance.

Jaen stops just on their side of the hill when the wasp is spied, rather than silhouette them against the sky. "Soldier, guards nest. Could lure away." He points, in case the winged, horse-sized thing with the stinger is not noticed. It's almost like a pegasus and unicorn combined.. just with the horn on the other end.

Katsuro drops down behind the hill with the others, and listens to Jaen. "If you want to draw it out, I can come in behind it?" That's as far as he gets for tactics.

Rocky considers for a time. "This one can be bait. Not so good at fleeing, but hard to hurt. If is a nest, may want fire ready. Doubt will want to leave nest intact."

Bannon nods his head, "These things aren't particularly intelligent." He looks towards Jaen and asks, "Did you see when that last one went right past me, only to get eviscerated by you?" At the second part, he indicates Rocky. He then adds, "We just need to be careful that it flying away from the nest doesn't trigger others to come out after us."

Down at the wasp cave, there's a changing of the guard. A wasp flies up with a small boar paralyzed and held between its legs. It lands and goes inside. A giant wasp comes out, and flies off in a different direction. The one hovering outside, remains in place, hovering.

A wasp being attacked will send out alarm pheremones. Attacking one near the nest would alert the nest. It could be drawn off, by an interesting smell or easy looking prey, and not raise an alarm.

Rocky considers as more are seen. One or two is one matter. An entire hive is quite something else. "Swarm would be very bad. Perhaps is other route. Small for person, but possible, too small for bug. If nothing found, try try to lure guard. Scent of blood would arger nest, but This One does not think wasp can shout for help."

"Hunters bring food for young," Jaen points out his interperetation of the incoming carried boar. "Take scout as food?" That means setting fire to the nest right now might not be a good idea... for the missing scout. "Attack at nest, will warn others with scent." He looks to Rocky, then to the others. "One be prey, draw guard?"

Katsuro says to the group, "If they swarm us, I have smokesticks, that should foul them up. But a back way in sounds like a good plan. Should we scout around?" he wonders.

A quick scouting of the area is done by Katsuro. He isn't spotted at all, the wasp continues hovering out front of the cave, seemingly oblivious. While the crevass extends to the top of the hill and the human is able to find gaps, nothing like a proper entrance is unconvered. There are a few places a contortionist could squeeze down, but it would be an awkward climb.

Near the front of the entrance is a rock and a bush that would make a good sniping position. It could also work for an ambush, and Katsuro is able to find a few others at different ranges from the entrance.

Katsuro sneaks up and scouts, but can't find a way in for everyone. He will attempt to squeeze in, but he finds it's not even a way in for him. He does spot a nice location closer in that would make a good ambush point, so he will sneak back to the group and let everyone know. "Found a nice place to ambush them from. There's another way in, but only for like halflings."

Rocky considers, and shrugs. "Would be good place to drop in burning oil, but This One does not have that. Bait and attack, then? Try draw guard away from entrance. Think maybe first gather dry brush, ready to shove into entrace and set on fire. Scout first, but have ready when needed."

Katsuro will lead the others to the ambush spot he found, and aid them in concealing themselves. Unfortunately, he has no idea what makes a person hard to spot for a bug. Fortunately, he's good enough at the art of not being seen that he can help everyone, at least a little. He then hunkers down, himself, in a carefully chosen spot that will let him attack from a flank if the ambush goes off as planned.

Bannon finds a spot with Katsuro's help to make a darn good effort at remaining hidden given his prevalence of bright clothing. He is squatted down behind a bush, the prevalence of flowers and other natural coloring making it difficult to spot him. He squats with his sword across his knees, awaiting for just the right moment to spring.

Jaen is able to locate a bit of cover and crouches low to try and conceal himself. His clothing, and dirt, do help him blend in some despite his ability to stalk being a matter of debate.

GAME: Rocky rolls bluff: (3)+2: 5

Rocky tries to stay back and out of sight, waiting for the others to get into position. Once all is ready, the large meaty lizard moves into the open, steel armor glittering in the light. ....bugs like shiney things, right? Suppose he's about to find out.

The sudden flashing and movement definitely gets the giant wasp's attention. It switches from its 'guarding' hover to an attack swoop. A loud attack run, which can be heard at the party's location, roughly 80' from the hive, and it probably a lot closer right at the entrance.

It zooms towards Rocky, ready to sting and flying straight into the ambush.

Rocky is somewhat startled as the creature just wizzes straight towards him, but was ready to be attacked. Holding, the lizard waits until the insect is commited to it's own attack before lauching his own, blade biting deep. Not a killing blow by itself, but then, he's not exactly alone.

Katsuro lies in wait as the wasp comes closer, and when it gets into position, he springs up. Not that up is very far for him, and he thrusts with his shortsword. He injures the wasp, taking a back leg and drawing a bit of ichor.

Bannon tilts his head left, then right, staying loose as he waits to spring the ambush. As Rocky makes his distraction, Bannon makes ready, his eyes watching the wasp descend with a fury. Breaking his cover, Bannon reaches out with his rapier, plunging it into the base of the wing and into the torso of the flying insect. He rips the rapier away with a growl, already setting up his next attack, even though it may not be neccesary.

Jaen waits for the WOUS to zip by overhead before standing up sharply. He also lifts his hand sharply, made so by claws that are swung against its path of travel. They open up the thorax that's already cracked by the rapier and sinking from the damaged wing. The important things on the inside that don't fall out of the wasp immediately are ejected or smeared when it plummets to the ground immediately after.

The yellow and black jacketed missile of death zooms towards the shiny, shiny, rock-lizard. Straight into the ambush, where it is hacked to pieces before it even gets to twitch its abdomen.

Pieces hit the ground. Curling and twitching in the throes of death.

Way back, where it was guarding, there is a loud buzzing coming from the cave. Nothing has emergered... yet.

Dramatis Personae

Rocky
'A large grey rock in armor' tends to be most first impressions of this sith-makar, though a closer look finds his scales are actually a mix of white and black, with a few splotches of green, a look not unlike a granite rock covered with bits of moss. Taller than the average human, he's massively stout, built thick and heavy, not unlike the boulder he resembles.

Rocky is almost always armed and armored, heavy plates of metal protecting his major organs, with layers of leather filling the gaps between. A kilt of smaller, flexable plates trails down over his legs, offering protction without hindering movement. He carries a green metal shield, and a simple set of weapons, favoring a plain longsword worn on his hip. Several smaller bags and pouches hang from his outfit.

He tends towards stillness, sitting quietly, moving only when there is need.

Jaen
This sylvanori man is comparatively tall and muscled, though the nature of his frame would still be considered more wiry than bulked, especially in comparison to more broad-shouldered bloodlines. Unkempt hair falls long and free where it will with the color, and possibly consistency, of vine and moss to stand in contrast to sun- and weather-darkened skin. Ears, nose, cheekbones, and jaw are long and angular, and the aquamarine eyes amist them all are bright and sharp.

Aside from the lay of his hair occassionally falling over some features of his head and neck, all of his appearance is readily apparent. His clothing and accessories are minimal and all rough hide: badly-stitched breeches that are worn off (or never were) just above the knee; wraps around forearms and across the back of his hand; skin markings that could be intentionally painted, or smudges of dirt and grime from the environment.

Katsuro
Katsuro is a short human of Xian descent in his early twenties. He's got tanned skin, with dark hair cut short and dark eyes, with thin eyebrows that arch. His build is pretty sturdy, with thick arms and strong legs, and he has a graceful stride, like a dancer.

He's currently wearing a plain tunic and breeches in neutral brown, with thin black slippers. The tunic is drawn up and closed up to his throat, the breeches are drawn around his ankles and puff out a bit to his knees. Over the tunic and breeches is a boiled leather cuirass dyed dull black. A thick belt around his waist boasts dull metal studs, and from it hangs a short sword, with a well-made scabbard in the Xian style. A backpack on his back has a few items in it, and a dark blue cloak hangs down his back to his knees. It's voluminous, and he could wrap it around him if he desired.
