  • Title: The Unfinished Duet, Part 4
  • Emitter: Delilah
  • Characters: Merek, Seldan, Ashes, Aya, Silmeria, Elyanna, Delilah
  • Place: A01: Jail Cells
  • Time: Monday, October 19, 2020, 8:39 PM
  • Summary: Delilah is in jail. Seldan, Silmeria, Ashes, Aya Elyanna and Merek meet with her to interrogate her on the murder she supposedly committed. The guard is insufferable, and Delilah distraught. Various things are asked, her funeral arrangements, if she's capable of a Magic Missile that was cast, the speed at which she can reload, a timeline of events the night the murder took place, about the writ and other details of the alley. The picture becomes clearer, then clearer still when Norrington walks in and happily annouces he's gotten her trail moved up. Hopefully, justice will be served as deserved.

The cells at the Watch are often often full with various people: the usual, returning drunks, the occasional shifty halfling, and then a few Korites who appear to have a rotating door policy. One cell in particular is labeled, 'Sandy.' Visitors may stand outside the cells to speak, while being overseen by an officer.

It's a dreary day outside; it's been dreary all week, actually, with an oppressive cloud cover hanging over the city of Alexandria, and rain drenching the city at least a quarter of the time. (And mostly just drizzling the rest.) That can be a bit of a problem for the high-security cells in the back of the jail, where the barred skylight can be prone to leak, sometimes. Certainly it has been a problem in Delilah's cell, and the steady drip drip drip of water has kept her awake two nights in a row.

Fortunately, the golden haired sorceress isn't in her cell right now; and although she's a bit blearly eyed, she's awake and alert, as she waits in one of the conference (Or rather, interrogation) rooms off to the side.

"In here," invites Knight Lieutenant Verras Godswin; a half-elf in chain armor with a pair of rifles slung on his back. "You may talk to the accused, and ask any questions you wish. I will be right outside for the enterity of the conversation. Under no circumstances interfere with her restraints or attempt to give her anything. If anyone does anything that can be construed as an attempt to break her out of prison, I will shoot the accused first and whoever is helping her second. I trust this is clear."

After these harsh terms are laid out, the door is unlocked and pushed open. Inside there's a table with seating for six, and an extra couple of chairs along the side; seeated in one of the chairs is Delilah, clothed in a plan white robe. She has bare feet with manacles around her ankles; and likewise on her wrists, with that chain attached to a metal loop set into the table. She looks up at the sound of the door opening; and as her fellow adventurers walk in, she dips her gaze back to the table, and blushes faintly. "Hello, everyone," she mumbles.

Merek is wearing what looks like the usual dark attire, with the belt about the waist, along with the nice longcoat which he wears. The man looks to Verras, "I've no intention to let her free, though I would actually suggest you don't threaten prisoners that can't even defend themselves." The man has the power to back up his words, without even stating what he might mean. He then smiles a bit, "We will behave," he notes. Then it's back to Delilah, with a nod.

Seldan's gaze is cool and level at the guard, but he inclines his head. "Your diligence and steadfastness does you credit, Guardsman. There shall be no trouble here." He allows the others to enter, entering himself last and closing the door behind him with a quiet *click*. "Her light upon your path, Mistress Valethor. I would have us keep this brief, but I have a few questions for you, and I am certain that others present do also. The first that I would know of you is this - does your sister hold the writ of summons that was served you the week before the murder?"

Ash follows. She's not sure why she's here, earlier suggesting she shouldn't. There is one question she could ask. Overall it's likely best if she doesn't say anything. So she doesn't, staring at Godswin as she walks past him. She takes up a spot at the back of the room, leans against it and slouches a little.

Aya is polite, and quite. In fact, she even gives the guard a smile! That should be what he would want or expect, yes? Somehow, it doesn't make her feel any less scrutinized. Does she have any questions to ask? Certainly. If naught else, she can inquire of the delights of detained life: the meals, accomodations, routine, guards, emplacements, schedules... As for specific questions concerning the accused, the Silver Guard seems on top of those at present.

Silmeria's pleasant smile doesn't move a hairsbreadth at the Guard's... friendly warning. With an utterly pleasant and cheerful mien, she holds Godswin's eyes for a handful of seconds, and dips her head, her smile widening ever so slightly. "Understood, Lieutenant. One must always act as they feel right and proper."

When she enters the room fully, she chooses a spot against the wall, pausing to drop a shallow curtsy at Delilah. "It's a distinct pleasure to see you well, Miss Valethor, and it's my sincere hope that the truth will out, and that you can help us find it."

Elyanna, herself needing to talk to the other Valethor, found her designs to that end thus far fruitless, and joined the others mostly to find out at least some of what she needed to know, ideally by gleaning it from unlrelated questions. With the dark clad man's pronouncement, "His goal is to keep her here." she notes distantly, a stately regimented bearing to her posture, though she occupies a similar position along the back wall. The accused, of past acquaintance on the job, is afforded the bow of her head and a polite, "Delilah." She doesn't ask how the woman is doing. She's managed enough prisoners, and is well able to guage such things on her own.

Delilah, being not asked about her condition, doesn't comment on it; and she looks like she's fine, aside from having bit of a black eye, though that seems to be at the point of being on the mend as well. She sits back in her chair, as much as the chains allow her to, and waits while everyone files in. "Thank you, Seldan," she replies, and smiles up at the paladin. "And a pleasure to meet you as well, Miss....?" she adds, looking to Silmeria. "I'm glad you're all here. It's hard to keep hope in here, seeing all of you... it... it helps."

The chained sorceress blinks rapidly a couple of times and clears her throat. "The summons? My sister has it. It was only a summons, so we left it behind in our room in the Inn. The... Golden Plum. I can't imagine Donna's changed accomodations."

She pauses for a moment, glancing Merek's way for a moment. "Uhh... yeah, please behave," she agrees. "I'd rather not get shot."

Merek nods a bit, while he would look to the chains, not quite sure what to offer in word to all of that. People are better inclined to be a bit diplomatic than him when it comes to asking things of someone in a situation like that. He seems like he'd rather be almost anyplace else, although he's about for Delilah. "Glad you're okay, I'll behave." That's what he will add to it all. - Ash glances at Elyanna, then Merek, she looks at the floor. She's standing behind Silmeria, if she slouches enough she'll be completely obscured by Silmeria. Delilah probably doesn't want someone with a skull on her face staring at her, that might be a little too cruel. She already knows what she's facing.

"I would have all of you obey instructions," Seldan looks around at the group, from face to face. "The zeal and intentions of the Guard are unquestioned." Something else is left to hang unspoken in his words. "It has come to us that the summons may be of interest. Elyanna, have you yet spoken with Donna?" He turns his attention to the half-Arvek. "Perhaps you might be able to secure the writ of summons?"

He returns the prisoner's smile with one of his. "Do not lose hope, and if you would have it, I shall return to cheer you, as often as I may. Certain members of the Guild," he nods to the gathered group, "have taken an interest in your plight. This is Speaker Silmeria," he nods to the blonde woman against the wall, and then proceeds to name each present in turn.

When he is done, he goes on. "Where might I find Ella?"

"Longmire," Silmeria says, dipping her head. "Speaker Silmeria Longmire, of the Vardaman Temple. And I'm glad we give you hope, miss... But, yes. Mori? Wake up. Protocol: Witness -- Silent."

Still securely strapped in and not budging a millimeter, some of the runes and traceries etched into the holstered pistol begin to glow faintly, and the Vardaman smiles. "Thank you, Mo--"

Pausing as Ash tries to hide behind her, the blond can't help but chuckle. "It's quite all right, Mourner Ashlee. You've been displaying good deduction skills so far, I imagine any questions you'd have for the lady would be more than pertinent. Just remember that words may cut equally as keenly as any knife, and try to be gentle with them." And the blond makes a 'go on' gesture, still more than a little amused.

Elyanna bows her head again on Delilah's words. She expects her only benediction, 'It won't be long, now.' would not be reassuring, so she doesn't waste the breath on it. She seems less enthused to be named within the walls at all, particularly as they've already met. The question brings forth a slow shake of her head, "She was unavailable. I will hasten there now for another attempt." With that, she gives a little bow, "Be strong." to Delilah and starts to make her way out of the chamber. On the question about the alibi, the halfbreed trips.

Aya arches a brow at Seldan in response to his urging. "As if I would grant the Guard any possible plausible justification to detain or murder me." She might well be present simply to cast suspicion elsewhere, or could cause damnation by association.

Delilah clasps her hands; not that she has much else to do with them at the moment. She opens her mouth to say something, then shuts it, then look up at Elyanna. "Stay," she replies. "I... please. Please stay? Donna's been doing jobs while she an' I've been waiting. It... She wants to feel like she's helping someone, and she can't help me right now. She should be back in town tomorrow I think."

Her eyes zero in on Silmeria's pistol, but she doesn't comment on it as she looks back up. "Yes, uhm, please do ask your question," she adds, looking past Silmeria to Ashes. "I mean... ask whatever you want, I guess. It's not like the guards haven't already interrogated me in detail about everything, no matter how... intimate." she blushes softly again, and dips her gaze back to the table.

"I don't know where Ella is," she mumbles. "I told the guard that Donna can vouch I was in the Golden Plum all night. Apparently my sister's tesimony doesn't count, she's just short of an accomplice in their eyes. I told them that Ella can vouch, as well, but so far they tell me they haven't been able to find her. I don't know where she lives." She pauses, and sucks in a deep breath. "She may've left town."

The ashen Arvec straightens up with a jolt. She was hoping not to ask any questions, earlier she said she had only one. Perhaps this is an effort to confuse the guard, make him believe that her group of friends aren't that friendly. If she was going to raise it, she thought it would be the last thing. Unless, that would demoralize Delilah worse by leaving her alone immediately after? Social conventions are hard. Maybe she'll take it in stride, be very business like about it. The Mourners are practical in that way, it wouldn't bother most of them. Some adventurers might be too. She asked her to ask too. Oh well, time to find out.

She steps to the space vacated by Elyanna, visible fully now. Ash has no expression, just a skull on her face, and one happy bee painted on a cheek. She tried to look cheerful today. Fixing her gaze on Delilah her words spill out flat, uninflected, "What did you want for your funeral arrangements?" Ash hesitates, perhaps something to head off interference, "Should we respect your family's wishes, your sister's, or are you in dispute?"

Merek looks then to Ashlee, while he seems to think about it. "That's... Not what you should ask," he notes, while he sighs a bit, then he would listen to what Delilah mentioned. "No one is being executed, we'll learn the truth," he notes.

Seldan goes impassive almost immediately, a cool and level gaze directed at the Mourner. He says nothing, though, merely turning to Delilah and allowing sympathy to crack the reserve. After all, his back is to the door. "Very well." He seems to be keeping his thoughts very much to himself. "Was your dragonspitter in your possession that night, when the murder took place?"

There is a moment of silence from the chair, after which Silmeria drops her face into her hands. "...Lady forgive me," she mutters, and draws in a long, slow breath. Once Seldan has asked his question, Silmeria clears her throat. "Also, regarding your spellcasting ability; the spell Magic Missile. I'm told that an arcanist's skill can be derived by how many they can summon in a single casting. Would you be kind enough to tell us your personal best?"

Elyanna pauses her stride, allowing the heavy cloak settle about her ankles before she twists to look back toward Delilah's entreaty. She is stone again, flitting a glance to the others in turns as they speak, though the Mourner's question gets the tick of an eyebrow. In her experience, prisoners had a better than average chance to end up rations, or left for the wildlife, though she glances amongst her fellows to guage the reactions. Best to learn the proprieties, first, no?

The half Arvek finally turns back to face the captive and says, "Remember the Blue Door." calling back to their past enterprise, where everyone came home. "Remember the river." when the red woman was carrying her to shore, and how they ended up in the drink in the first place, "Let no one take that strength from you." How reassuring that would be, she couldn't fathom, though it is her intent. In either case, she does not elaborate, further, but she abides Delilah's wish.

The Mourner's question seems a pertinent- and prudent-enough one to Aya, if not especially sensitive. Not terribly surprising given Ash's calling. Not that Seldan's and Silmeria's inquiries are not likewise relevant. No beter questions of her own come to mind just yet, so she remains a quiet observer for a few moments longer.

Delilah manages a weak smile for a moment, and shakes her head. "That bad, is it?" she asks, quietly. "It's... it's fine. Not the question I expected, but it's... a reasonable one to ask, given the circumstances, I guess." she leans forwards a little and sucks in a breath. "So... The guards already told me what happens, because I... I asked them. I'm an accused murderess. if I'm convicted then after I die by beheading, there's a cemetary for executed criminals. I get a pine box and the cheapest headstone money can buy." She pauses for a moment, and forces herself to swallow. "My head goes to your temple," she nods to Silmeria and Ashes. "Apparently you have a vault for those. Prevents rogue resurections or... something."

The sorceress falls silent for a moment, but shakes herself out of it. "These last few days are the first time my dragonspitter has *not* been in my possession, since..." she shrugs, "Since the last time I was arrested. It's just good discipline to keep it ready so that when I'm outside city walls I can defend myself and my sister." She nods towards Seldan, "That's true," she replies. "The spell tops out at five missiles for the majority of casters, either eidetic or those of us who cast from the blood and soul, like me. I haven't reached five yet, I'm not that strong. I can only do four."

A look is given to Elyanna as well, and she bobs her head once. "I'll... I'll try," she murmurs. "But I'm tired, and I'm scared."

"Okay." Ash says, her question answered. The Vardama temple has lots of things like that. A vault full of hands, corridors stacked with bones. A thousand years of burials and some things get... creative. Not that they're mentioned often, or shown to the public. She has no follow up questions to her first, the Feiu of the Tears handles what comes next. She carefully considers some of the other things discussed. She makes a note, short casket, extra box, on her notepad.

A growing, boyish smile begins to split Seldan's face at the answer to Silmeria's question, and he looks over at the Speaker. "The body had five marks upon it," he observes quietly, returning his gaze to Delilah. One hopes that the small information would be a measure of hope. "A strange question this might seem, but is the _greater invisibility_ spell known to you?"

Merek looks on with a celestial gold within that gaze, luminescent. The sage takes a moment to think to himself while he crosses both of his arms. There's a little tilt to that head while he speaks, "Yes, I think that as well. If that is the Will," then he nods to Delilah. "We will discover the full of the truth." Then he walks to where Ashlee was at, seeming to content.

A blood caster.

Hmmm.

Ely looks to her cohorts a moment, refinements to her suspicions. She looks to Delilah anew and begins with reinforcement, "You know what you did, or did not do, as do the Gods. Fear is just an uncertain promise. Hold true to yourself, because it is most precious, and can only be taken if you allow it." She tried to discourage that sort of thinking when she was in Bludgun, so it probably will help, here. That said, she asks, "How fast can you fire, reload, and fire again?"

Aya simply vanishes.

"A good follow-up, Silver Guard," Silmeria notes, glancing curiously at her holstered gun for a moment, then smiles to Ely, nodding at the astute question asked from the warrior as well. "Miss Valethor, it's certainly quite exhausting to be in such a predicament. But as you said at the start; we all of us are working as hard as we can to see you through this, and reunite you safely with your sister."

Ash has used up her question. She glances over at Merek as he comes her way, then looks at Elyanna. Her question was good, it makes her think of a follow-up. "Where do you keep your store of bullets? Were all of them handed over to the guards?"

"The guards took all of my ammunition," Delilah replies to Ash. "They took everything, actually, and I do mean *everything*, right down to my small clothes. I'm almost surprised they gave me this robe to wear." She points towards herself as best the manacles allow. "I have bullets from all over, actually. I bought some in the markets here; I've gotten more from a couple other smiths in different towns. I've taken some off of bandits after fighting them and, y'know, winning."

The sorceress' eyes land on Seldan, and she shakes her head. "No, that one is beyond me. I know the base spell, as of about... two months ago, when I first worked it out, but that's as far as I've gotten." She looks at Merek and Silmeria, as they offer their reassurances, and bobs her head once more. "I know, I'm... I just feel like I'm waiting to die," she mumbles. A drop of moisture wells up in each eye and rolls down her cheeks; and in her current condition she can't do anything about it. "I know you're all working really hard. This isn't like adventuring though, which is dangerous, it's... it's a good deal more malicious. I'm not sure how to say it." She sucks in a breath, and lets it out slowly. "Thank you for not giving up on me."

"Could actually cross-examine that ammunition, though with them being from different places," Merek would note, while he looks to Delilah. "We won't let them win. Don't worry on it, If that costs me everything." He nods a bit to the woman. The man when he would offer giving himself for any task, he seems to give it all. He won't mention what they already have manage to find, although he offers a knowing smile to the woman, as if a way to speak of the progress they've made already.

"The lesser version of the spell will end if the invisible one attacked another," Seldan explains to the room in general, in a quiet murmur, but says nothing more. Instead, he watches Delilah with real sympathy, but does not move to her. "Do not say it, Mistress. Your meaning is known to me, and has been in my thoughts." He leaves it at that, adding instead, "Seer, she may be at risk, do you take any action that defies the rule of law directly. It is not our place, may harm her, and runs counter to that which I am sworn to. We seek to fully understand the situation, and there is more work to be done. I know that you are in difficulty, Mistress Valethor, but I may not interfere."

Elyanna purses her lips again. The answer to Ashes's query handles her next question, though the first still lingers, yet, "Delilah, I need to do something for me." As she speaks, she steps closer, moving her arms as little as she can to leave her cloak obscuring her beneath, though she turns to leave no chance the guard may assume her hands are emerging to pass the woman anything. "Close you eyes. Think of danger. You are close to your enemy, when you line up your shot, say 'Bang!' In your mind, reload in haste, reacquire, and say 'Bang!' when you take the shot."

She will count in musical beats.

The ashen Arvec moves to where she can see Delilah's mock shooting of Elyanna. She watches to see which hand flinches, likely her dominant and shooting hand if she pantomimes it accurately. Her large ears flick, she exhales slowly. "Who owns the Gilded Seahorse, who works at the Iron Kitchen?"

Silmeria tilts her head at the questions the two Arvek pose, eyebrows rising in curiosity. What answers may be forthcoming should certainly be interesting.

Delilah closes her eyes, and takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly. "Bang," she states, and then about five seconds later, "Bang." She opens her eyes, and shrugs her shoulders lightly. "I've admittedly never timed it," she adds, "But.. I mean, when I'm out of spells and have to rely on my gun to defend myself and help my friends, I like to keep up a good rate of fire. I'm no ranger or marksman; I'm never going to equal the sort of firearm skill some people have, but... but I'm competent. I can shoot."

She pauses, tilting her gaze towards Ashes, and furrowing her brow in deep thought. "I... don't... know?" she replies. "My sister and I have never been to the Gilded Seahorse, it's... We could afford it these days, but it's not our scene? We don't like hanging out with nobles usually, unless we're sneaking in so we can make fun of 'em. Been... in jail a couple times for that actually... guess we deserved it," she mumbles, trailing off towards the end.

"Isn't there golem who makes the food at Iron Kitchen? I think we've been there. Not for a long time though."

"'Competent,'" Silmeria echoes, adjusting her spectacles. "D'you mean to say that you're used to how loud a gun is, miss Valethor? That you don't flinch away from your shots?"

Merek nods a bit to what was said to him, while he keeps on listening.

Ash stares as Delilah gives her answers. She makes no acknowledgement. She has no knowledge of the Gilded Seahorse, she saw only the sign outside. The Iron Kitchen does indeed have a golem, who makes excellent strudel and pilaf. It's a happy memory for the mourner, although she was hoping her question would cause confusion. She blinks slowly, once, continues to stare at Delilah. Her blank expression is in part due to her struggle to come up with something, anything, meaningful. Finally another thought drifts across her grey mind. This must be known, hasn't it been asked before? Perhaps not.

"What were your activities, times and locations as best as you recall, starting at sunset the day prior to the murder and ending at the steps of the courthouse."

Elyanna nods crisply once the mental excercise is complete and reopens her eyes, "I will see what I can do with this." she assures Delilah. She looks to the guard a moment and steps back from the prisoner, then looks to the others as they ask yet mroe questions, content to absorb what is said as she composes the field test.

"No names are necessary, we'll find any witnesses to the locations at the times named." Ash amends and adds to her question. Silmeria has partially disconnected.

Delilah nods to Silmeria. "Yeah, I'd say so," she replies. "I mean it scared me the first couple times I fired a gun, which was this one time my sister and I got jumped by four bandits when we were just starting out, but it wasn't that bad even then. I got my current pistol shortly after that 'cause I liked it." She rolls her shoulders, "I mean... anyone who can cast magic missile with four or five projectiles aught to be experienced in battle, right? You'd think."

She pauses, and glances at Ash. "Well... I mean, how much detail do you want? Pretty much the entire afternoon and evening my sister and I were staying in the Golden Plum, where she was trying to calm me down from fretting about the thing with, with, uhm, Bethany the next day. I had a bath. I wandered downstairs to the common room in a bathrobe and picked up a girl to take back to our room, her name was Ella. We..." She blushes deeply, "We slept with each other and it was wonderful. The next morning after dawn my sister and I got up and went to court, and then I got arrested."

"You'd be surprised," Silmeria says with a slight chuckle. "I've seen hardened warriors turn the air blue and drop it, after firing a gun for the first time. You always think you're ready for the noise and the kick, but in truth..."

"Which room in the Golden Plum?" Ash asks. Nearby occupants might have been disturbed, outside and across the street even, depending on how well the evening went. Best not to mention that. Still, it is relevant, and who knows, someone might sleep in the alley and be able to assure that no one climbed out a window to run off and gun a rival down. "Did you eat breakfast at the Golden Plum, did anyone see you leave?"

Elyanna takes things in in silence, continuing to compose her test, though, as her eyes flit from speaker to speaker, clearly she is still with the room at large. She offers an offhand, "I have seen hardened warriors shrink at the crack of a whip."

"Well..." Delilah puffs herself up and tries to look defiant for a moment, but deflates just as quickly. "I think I'm an experienced sorceress, and I shrink at the thought of being ordered to have my head cut off. So... here we are." She looks at Ash, "Room 21," she replies. "First room on the second floor. It's cozy, got its own bathroom, corner windows overlooking the main street and the side street. It's one of the pricier rooms at the Plum but my sister and I can afford it."

Delilah pauses to collect her thoughts. "Uhh... don't think anyone much was caring about who went where in the morning. Donna and I each grabbed two slices of toast with poached eggs in the middle and ate on the run."

Delilah clasps her hands in front of her, and tilts her gaze to Silmeria once again. "Before you and Ashes go, can I... ask your help with one other thing? Just in case?"

At this, Silmeria glances at Ashes for a moment, and nods. "Of course, miss Valethor," she says, turning her gentle good cheer fully toward the poor sorceress. "You can ask anything you need of us."

Ashlee nods, looking directly at Delilah and waiting silently.

Elyanna nods concedingly at Delilah's point, but as the others have the floor, she allows them to keep it.

"Help me..." Delilah trails off, and then starts again with a strained voice. "Help me write a will," she states. "I... I know you're going to tell me I don't need it yet, because even if I do get sent to the headsman I'll be given time to get my affairs in order. But it'll be easy anyway, I want to leave everything to my sister. I just..." she sucks in a deep breath, "If I know she's going to be taken care of, then hopefully I can worry a bit less about things that aren't my trial."

"Miss Valethor," Silmeria says with a gentle smile, "you're quite in luck. Drafting and executing wills is perhaps the second most common duty I take on as a Speaker. So, I can promise you, before I leave here today, your affairs *will* be put in order, should the very worst come to pass."

The blond looks to Ashes, and chuckles. "Mourner Ashlee, would you take care of the scribing, and I can coach her on what sort of language should be put in the will to make it legally binding?"

"Ok." Ash says, an incline of her head to Delilah, a second one to Silmeria. She glances at Merek, he's off communing with the angels, he won't be able to produce a chair out of thin air for her. There aren't others in the room. Her gaze turns to the guard, who will likely object if she sets anything on the table or gets too close to the prisoner. So she takes a sheaf of papers out of her satchel, and her pen and sits on the floor. She flips her bag around to use the writing surface in it. Some of the sheets already have writing, simple wills with standard sections to fill in. It's better to write one completely though. It prevents editing. With Simeria dictating, all she will have to do is write. This will be easy. Her centipede crawls up on the top of her head and settles in her hair to watch. Once again, she speaks in complete monotone, "I'm ready."

The writing of the will doesn't take overly long; like Delilah said, she planned on leaving everything to her sister. Perhaps it's important that there's language specifically mentioning her various weapons and other adventuring gear, enchanted items, jewelry, clothes, money, and so on... but it still doesn't take long.

Delilah ist just about to offer her thanks and is in the process of breathing a sigh of relief, when the door opens and Knight Captain Norrington strolls in.

The Knight Captain nods to the adventurer's present, before placing a piece of parchment on the table in front of Delilah. "Good news, Miss Valethor," he observes, taking a step away and clasping his hands behind his back. "You won't have to worry about being stuck in a jail cell for much longer. Your trial begins first thing in the morning, the day after tomorrow."
