  • Summary: The Explorer's Guild wants adventurers to investigate a Khazad Mining Caravan which suffered Calamity in the Redridge Mountains. The drivers were taken, the ore was not. It's several days out, Cryo agrees to go once she's made arrangements for Lily, and also because Sabina is coming. While it's a long walk, it is refreshing and she attempts to entertain Sabina, Nels and MAC-B1G. Arriving at the bridge, a blood trail is obvious and it goes over the side. While peering over, a giant rocky scorpion leaps out and attacks. Battle Ensues! Cryo starts off with a cold breath weapon, which it seems resistant too. Nels fires, and these bounce. MAC-B1G goes for percussive damage. Poor Sabina is badly struck, unable to get away in time and weakened incredibly by the poison. Cryo attempts a spell, which goes badly for her, and she is nearly dragged over the side. The scorpion focuses on Nels, and he manages to kill it, showering the white lizard in gore. It then explodes. The group discusses options, like going over the side, and Sabina regains consciousness and heals everyone while MAC-B1G looks over the side of the bridge some more. A second scorpion attacks! Battle Ensues Again! Cryo has her icicle dagger and buckler this time, and strikes better. MAC-B1G is almost pincered in half, and Nels' fire helps. It is Sabina's Hideous Laughter spell which saves the day, as it appears the creature had some intelligence. As it writes on the ground in giggles, the Sith stabs deep into its underbelly. It tries to rise, and she pushes the blade deeper. It dies, and then explodes, and she's covered in gore once more. MAC-B1G has a surprisingly V-shaped torso now, and moves with a lot more noise. The area is investigated, the lost caravaners are found - as corpses. The party builds sleds and drag them back to Alexandria. Mission accomplished.

The explanation from the guild representative had been terse, and this one had gone out quickly. Two khazad mining caravans have now been found, their cargo and the wagons untouched save perhaps for blood or the odd weapon cut upon the reinforced wagons, but no sign of anything living around them. Blood trails suggest that at least one had been dragged off down the mountainside, but to where? And by what?

That's your job to figure out.

The chase is afoot! The adventurers are at the Guild.

Terse... Not something Bina does well with but she's useds to that and worse by now from the guild. "Nothing stollen, just people taken? Odd. It doesn't sound like bipedial behavior. Are there any major threats in that are that are known?" she asks of their job giver.

Cryosanthia is at the Explorer's guild, looking over jobs, checking to see if certain ones have been taken down. The urgency of the khazad caravan catches her eye, and the mining connection. Although someone after the ore would have taken that, and not the people.

"They might have been kidnapped for a purpose, although I agree, it sounds more like predators." The whitescale nods after Sabina's question, "Any earlier reports of bandits, beasts?"

She coughs, "Kobold nests?"

Nels has signed up to provide assistance, though he is perhaps not the best investigator around. He will check over his thunderbelcher to make sure everything's squared away, and listen as the others ask questions. "Kidnapping's never good," he agrees. "If the cargo's left, animals seems likely."

MAC-B1G's most recent hypothesis of progentitor units being liquified and bottled eventually proved false. In this instance, it witholds audible theory until more data is acquired. Until others offer their own. "This unit concurs. Probability of carnivorous entity involvement: seventy-six point five five percent."

The human sitting behind the desk - well, all right, on it is more accurate - nods. "Seems likely, doesn't it? The miners weren't exactly clear on where it was, aside from the cavern bridge, but if I'm right about the route they were taking, that's within half a day of that rift in the mountains that opened a few months ago. Reports from adventurers sent to investigate that area said that something demonic was down there. Whether it's reached that far, I can't say, but I'd be careful if I were you."

"Demonic?" Sabina asks and then sighs. "Very well. We shall most certianly take care. Any other info you know about the area or maps that could be provided? It would be most helpful."

"Demons. A rift." The white-scale Sith nods, and agrees with Sabina, "We'll try not to fall in. A map sounds good, yes."

Cryo turns to the others assembled, "Can you think of anything else, or should we get going?."

To the human on the desk, "is transport available, horses, a coach?"

Nels blinks. "Demonic? What in the world were the dwarfs mining that they dug up demons?" he asks. Sighing, he grumbles, "That's dwarves for you, always digging up eldritch horrors from the depths." He shrugs to Cryo and nods, "I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be."

"Sufficient data acquired," MAC-B1G notes. It begins to lumber off. The location was noted as the cavern bridge. If there are more than one, its relative location to a demonic portal and noted of blood trails will eliminate false positives.

"Yes, of course you wouldn't know which trade route they were on, I'm so silly." Hopping off the desk, the Guildster pulls out a remarkably detailed map notated in the khazdul runes and lays it out across the desk, turning it so that you can all see. "We're here," he explains, pointing to what is clearly the airstation, "and the trade route they said they took runs this way, up towards Khazad-Duin and across the plains, but reports say they were found in the Redridge still. They weren't specific about where precisely they were, you'll have to track that down. That's too high for horses," he shakes his head at Cryosanthia. "Mules might do it, but you're probably better off on foot."

The map shows a route through some craggy areas of the Redridge.

Sabina says, "Thank you, sir. We shall check that we have supplies anough and take off to said site quickly as we can." Bina tells the man and then looks to the others. "Shall we?""

"That's a lot of days on foot." Cryo observes, taking out a notepad and starting to copy a smaller and simplified version of the map over. "I'm going to need someone to watch Lily. 'Bina, Are you going to be okay away from the TarRace that long? Irshya offered, but I can't ask her to for days. Maybe Serrendine... yes, she would, I think."

The whitescale sith's priorities have reordered. Don't die, be a good clutch-mother, make sure kobolds aren't involved, do some work for coin. Be a great and useful hero has dropped down the list, unless she can tack it on somehow to one of the higher ones. "Yes... sure... I need to make some arrangements. Then I can go."

Nels will hike along like a good goblin. "It'd be nice to have a good riding dog or wolf," he grumbles. "Shoe leather is expensive." Of course our general rate of pay will certainly pay for the new shoes he's wearing...

MAC-B1G began its journey a moment before others, but is neither rapid nor inconspicuous. Its faceplate pans and descends towards Nels at the complaint. "Alternatives: utilize covering manufactured from more durable materials. Do not utilize covering."

The trip itself is - long, if not entirely dull. The Guild rep was right, in that the mountain travel is too arduous for horses, and with fall coming on, there's a nip in the air this high up. Still, the weather holds bright and sunny, and the roads are well-paved and well-cared for, showing signs of regular use. The journey is not at all unpleasant, and it has been quiet thus far.

Bina hums quietly to herself as they travel, yet keenly aware that she must keep eyes open for danger. Demons are not to be thought of lightly. Nor the danger itself taken for granted. But she enjoys the weather and company isn't bad either.

Cryosanthia can be talkative. There are times when it seems she hooks her mouth directly to her brain without any filters and her stream of consciousness become a constant waterfall of narration. Thoughts pour out as they occur to her, and while they will wander off in random directions sparked by odd objects on the journey, they keep coming back to certain themes.

She's worried about her foundling. She wants to get through this as quickly as possible and get back. She's concerned her foundling will pick up some bad habits. Other thoughts, "Nels, do you mind if I ask a personal question?" She doesn't wait for permission, "You're the only goblin I've seen to never bite someone. Is there something wrong with your teeth? Did you used to bite people, and then stopped when you were turned into human woman and it never came back after you came back?"

She thinks widely, not deeply. The weather is pleasant, the cold doesn't bother her, and the best way to get her to stop speaking is ask for some marching music. The icy Sith is rather good at holding a beat.

MAC-B1G does not 'enjoy' the quiet, per se, though the lack of background noise makes those of potential concern more conspicuous. Also, 'quiet' may be a very subjective term, given the metallic impact of locomotive appendages upon the soil and rock.

Nels boggles at Cryo. "You know some weird people. Are you sure they're not ... you know, special?" He makes a gesture with his finger swirling over his temple. "Anyhow, biting people is wildly unsanitary. You should avoid it."

As the group talks, they approach a well-maintained bridge that crosses a deep gorge between peaks. The green of the valley is turning, slowly but surely, into flaming yellows, oranges, and reds as the season sets in, and set against the gray backdrop, it really is a magnificent sight. "Yes... I'll... make a note of that." Cryo has been known to bite people in the past. She's terribly embarassed about it, and upon reflection, it was unsanitary too. She nods slowly, "Avoid biting people. Yes. Ahem. Anyone for another round of ninety-nine steins of ale on the wall?"

"Oh, hey! There's the bridge." She's distracted by the colours of the leaves. "Oh wow."

Nels spots, among the colorful leaves, the marks of something dragged bleeding near the beginning of the bridge and points it out to everyone. "Hey, there's the marks they told us about."

Sabina says, "Let us go and find them..I hope alive. But somehow I doubt it. Someone who's better at tracking then myself I'd think?" She grins and shakes herself."

"Roadway span structure confirmed," the construct confirms. Validation is important, even for the blatantly obvious. Its faceplate pans and declines as it scans the structure, the path pausing on the terrain nearest them, short of the bridge proper. "Biological fluids detected..." It tromps further, stopping to look directly downward. "Relocation probably..."

It is easy enough for all to see - at least one was pulled right _over_ the edge of the bridge, wall or not. Whatever pulled over was strong enough to do so by brute force, judging by the marks.

Cryo moves to examine the blood trail, now that it's been pointed out to her. She has some survival skills, and while there is no such thing as a 'City-Sith' she has been inside most of her life and her scent-tracking is somewhat diminished. She does her best, which is kind of average, "We should set ropes, it looks like a climb."

Bina looks over the marks of blood and other things.. then gingerly looks over the lip of the bridge and downward, ready for soemthing to drag her away at any moment. She holds her breath..

Nels peers. "Trolls," he guesses. Well, that's what grabs people off bridges, right?

MAC-B1G once more shifts its focus to unit Nels, who appears to be greatly informed. "Data limited on topic: trolls. Elaborate."

Without warning, as Cryosanthia and Sabina peer over the lip of the bridge, the rock itself - _moves_. Only then does it become evident that the group wasn't looking at rock over the edge at all! A scorpion the size of a woodshed springs straight up at the group, its gray-brown carapace adorned with rocks that seem to be stuck to its back, beady eyes glittering with an evil intelligence as it lunges at the party.

The scorpion is playing pop-up games. Cryo has very few ranged items and she's not about to throw away her cold iron dagger, which isn't close to hand anyhow. There's always spells, she lets her claws turn back into hands and makes some arcane gestures.

That turns out to be a mistake, the scorpion jumps up and swipes at her, claws catching. She is a lucky lizard, narrowly escaping being grabbed.

The spell though, that's gone. "Dammit snaaawwp," she slurs, as she goes more feral again, transforming so she has weapons ready for it the next time.

Nels trots along the bridge, putting a bit of distance between himself and the scorpion. That's a big monster! Once clear, he finishes jiggling the bolt handle and clearing the jammed rounds in the chamber. He sighs, slides the action again, and reloads his thunderbelcher, ready to try this again.

As the giant rock-like scorpion dies, it lashes one last razor-sharp claw out at Cryosanthia, but it is a wild flail, and no match for her speed, but it then _explodes_ into shards of obsidian-colored ice that fly in every direction, shredding flesh and metal alike.

Sabina is out cold, behind Cryosanthia.

Especially all over Cryosanthia. Perhaps standing behind it as it got its brains blown out was not the best of plans. She's showered in obsidian rocks, carapace, the ice shards of that claw and whatever the infernal insect had for innards.

And, her mouth was open. Gak! She coughs. Spitting. It's cold too, freezing enough to hurt. She starts to wonder if her cold iron dagger is cursed. She coughs again, "Thanks Nels."

Cough, cough. Catching sight of Sabina, she rushes over to her. "Our healer needs healing."

Nels acks as he hits the scorpion and it explodes. He feels a bit bad about that even as the blast of freezing cold washes over him, and he rushes over to the others, shivering badly. "Sorry, they don't usually explodes like that when I shoot them. I'm almost positive that wasn't me." Because with goblin engineering, it's never entirely certain.

MAC-B1G avoided the majority of the spatter, if mostly due to positioning. It is still spattered across the chassis, but seems to have no opinion on the matter, aside from the indirect observation. "Threat neutralized." Its faceplate swivels to follow unit Cryosanthia as she moves to the damaged unit Sabina. "Unit operational?"

"I don't think she is." Cryo makes one more strong cough that is almost throwing up, and then she seems fine. Lizards. "Do you have healing fuctions MAC Bee One Gee?"

She's already checking through her inventory. The white sith, does not. She has a startling familiarity with anatomy, but that doesn't always help.

Nels helps with the healing, he felt bad about blowing the scorpion up. He brushes Cryo aside, "That's not her bits, that's part of the scoprion. This," he gestures at another bit of gore, "is part of what we need to dress." He bandages Sabina with quite a lot of bandaging material.

Cryo lets herself be pushed aside. She nods, watching as Nels bandages up Sabina, and nods at his diagnosis. "Ok. Well, there may be more of those under the bridge. Also, since the blood goes there, that's probably where the miners went."

She sits back on her tail, staying in the crouch. She also pulls out her buckler and straps it on. Perhaps it can get into a fight at some point too. "Sooo... spiders normally web up their prey, then drink them into husks. This is what Torrent does. Scorpions are related to spiders, but I don't think they do the webbing. Their venom might liquify. That was a deadfall scorpion. They're forest, they normally hide in the trees, and fall on you."

"They also don't tend to explode when they die... so that's new."

"Negative," the construct responds. "Primary function: assault. Secondary function: anti-mana. Tertiary function: anti-personnel."

The white sith nods, standing and observing the bridge. For good measure, she looks around at the trees. She takes out her Goblin Army Knife and starts working the levers. She works at it a few rounds, but seems unable to get any selection beyond a knife, fork, tweasers and a toothpick. "I thought there was supposed to be a rope in this. And other things. We need to check the underside, then go down. Perhaps we can get a side view from a distance first."

Nels peers at Cryosanthia struggling with her Goblin Army Knife, and ohs. "Oh, that one doesn't have rope," he says dismissively. "That's the Officer's model, it's kinda useless. It's just got fancy knife, fork, and four kinds of spoon," he explains to her, and will pass his model over to her. "Try this one, it's the deluxe model."

MAC-B1G's faceplate swivels between Cryosanthia, the knife, Nels, the other knife, and around to repeat the circuit. "Inquiry: Purpose of rope within tool? Evaluation: tool role as anchor dubious."

Cryo ohs and takes the deluxe model. She works the levers. It's a cornicopia of features! She is stunned and envious. After a little bit, she discovers the spool of spidersilk rope. The icy sith explains her plan. "So, let's look from the edges, and if we don't see anything, MAC Bee One Gee, you can lower me over the side and I'll looksee some more. Nels be ready to shoot anything that pops out."

She thinks about this plan in detail. Nope, doesn't seem to be any flaws. "Or... we could fish with a hunk of scorpion first, just to be safe."

Nels reviews the plan, looks over Cryo thoughtfully, and says, "Maybe not the rope from the knife. That's kinda lightweight rope. It's intended for goblins, after all. I've got some regular rope in my pack," he explains, fishing it out and handing it over.

"Oh, right," says the very tall, very heavy sith'makar who doesn't consider such things often. "Good catch!"

Not embarassed about her weight at all, she also tries to get a good side-view of the underside of the bridge by venturing off the road. She moves carefully and slowly, both looking up, and making sure she doesn't push through a bush to a sudden drop-off.

Unexpectedly, she calls out, "HEY! Anyone THERE?" She listens carefully after.

Sabina's eyes open and she takes a paniced breath..and imediately regrets the action. Her eyes get wide and she lets out a groan through clenched teeth. Eye close again to collect herself.

No sound of combat.. sound of voices instead. The group must have won the fight. Her head turns and eyes open again to find the group. She finds them and sees the state they're in and their readiness to go over the side. "What the hells..do you think.. you're doing?" She weazes out.

Nels reloads his thunderbelcher and leans over the side, covering Cryosanthia, in case anything leaps up at her. Or if it leaps up at him, of course. When she calls out, he scans the area below to see what's there. Where things could be hidden, what's obvious, and all that. MAC-B1G's faceplate rotates around to face over its flank and towards Sabina at the query. "Unit designate Sabina, this unit is pleased that you remain functional. Response: Task force units prepare to descend. Query: Do you require further repairs?"

Cryo halts her preparations, turning to Sabina. "Sabina! You're awake. The bandages worked! We used all of them." The tsurian is well trussed up. The white sith looks at the rope she's holding, and the various chunks of beastie around her. She answers the query.

"Fishing for Scorpions. Scorpioning for Scorpions? Trying to see if there are more down there, then what that one did with the dwarves. Oh wait!"

She quickly casts, her left arm flashes with faint sparkles of light. Except her buckler catches on her hip and she makes a small yelp. Cryo goes through the motions again, then her eye-scales glow. She looks around for anything exceptionally magic in the leftover chunks. "You might want to be careful standing up. Your injuries looked pretty bad. Also, it got me too."

The Tarienite sighs, gentley lest she hurt herself, and then lifts a hand far enough up to becon them closer. "You're all roughed up. And you're going to dangling off the side looking for more of those things? And what if there are more? Or.. " She stops to breath slowly. "Or if they're bigger down there? Come let me heal you all at least. I'm not... doing anyone.. any good else-wise."

Sabina also notes, "I have a pair of slippers that would help you too. Let you crawl about the ..bridge.. sides..and under."

Nels won't say no to healing, though he'd like to remain on the edge of the bridge so he can peek over and watch the area the scorpion attacked us from. At the mention of the magic slippers, though, he'll pull back, because Cryo's going to want to borrow those in any event, and it looks like a party-wide pause for reconfiguring is in the works in any event.

"Recommendation concurred," the construct agrees with the comments. "Conduct repairs. This unit will scan for further threats and locate aligned units." It's faceplate rotates back to the precipice and it scans downward once more, evaluating both presences as well as the terrain. Heals! Oh yes please! Cryo scampers over like a youngling after a treat, happy and eager, mouth open in a grin. "Of course you are, I wouldn't have come if you didn't think it was a good idea, and you have a better plan than me. Thinking is important."

The white sith lines up dutifully, adjusting the set of the buckler on her arm. Her eyes continue to glow, although there's a lot to be desired in her noticing and searching skills. Her tail sways behind her, her weight shifting in counterpoint to it as she waits. She glances back at the bridge then eagerly towards Sabina.

The fall breeze whisks down the gorge, singing in the rocks, and it is the only sound you hear as Sabina calls you over.

A punch line. A punch line? A punch line!

Cryosanthia panics. Not because she's in a deadly fight with a giant infernal scorpion, that is not only escaped from hell but completely ignoring it's natural biome for opportunistic bridge snacks. Nor because she's on that bridge, and one bad grapple away from wishing she had wings. Neither the concern that dying will leave her foundling motherless again. These are valid worries, in the background of her mind.

No, the creature is laughing, MAC-B1G performed some precision strikes and calmed it down. Clearly time is flowing backwards, she's not only on the spot to stab it somewhere painful, her qualifications as a dashing hero might be revoke. She needs a good joke! Why did the chicken cross the road? What is the difference between a Raven and a Writing Desk? A good Artificer Pick-up Line. No, no, no. Nels is firing! She needs something quick! A Knock-knock?

THRUST! "Nothing good rhymes with Scorpion! Dammit!" Cryo's blade however, pierces deep, and her angry shout as well as where she stuck the point disable and demoralize the beast, keeping it down.

The creature weakly waves a claw, as if about to do _something_, but Cryosanthia is faster, and the cold iron weapon plunges into the crack in its malformed carapace one last time. It shudders, its stinger wildly flailing in the sith-makar's general direction, and then _explodes_ into a thousand shards of bone-piercing and flesh-piercing cold - and is no more.

It's moving!

"Stay Down!" Cryo growls, leaning onto her blade and shoving the icicle further in. This is a part of my soul, and it's going to cut yours in half. She whips her arm to drive it deep.

Reflexively, it swipes at her, but she's already lept free, the attack missing. Then it explodes.

Oh right, they do that.

She's hit by a good chunk of those shards, taking the full blast of ice, cold and gore.

The not-really-white-anymore Sith stands there in a moment of silence.

Bina raise her arm to try to protect herself without much need. It throws her off balance and she falls over to the ground and chooses to stay there. She yells out. "Everyone...ok?!" Well.. no. Likely they aren't but she still asks.

"System function restored to twen-" the construct's announcement is interrupted by exploding, formerly-laughing, recently-crushing, efficiently-rending scorpion of unusual size.

Shard of chitin and melting ice are embedded into armor plating, strcutural members, and recently-stabilized components. ".. four point three three percent."

Nels is luckily farther away from this one when it explodes, he ducks behind an arm, tucking his head and letting the explosion pass by him, having expended its energy. "Gah, are you guys OK?" he calls out.

"Sabina..." Cryo calls out, entreatingly, "... could you handle the planning? My ideas aren't working out. Also, I need a little more healing."

Warily, in case something further is about to pop-out, she backs off the bridge towards her friend.

MAC-B1G rotates its faceplate towards Nels at the query. This occurs with some grinding and squealing of metal on metal contact. "This unit remains operational." There are further abnormal sounds as it moves, with less evenly-coordinated strides, towards the others; specifically Sabina as the now-designated commander. "Awaiting further instructions."

Bina lets out a snort..and then a stifled chuckle that makes her face screw up in pain. "ow.....ow.." Still she chuckles more afterward, arms holding on to her ribs. "Well.. We're alive. Mostly. First... come.. heal please."

Nels looks around, and since he wasn't hurt by the blast, he'll remain on lookout while the others gather up for healing. "I'm OK," he explains, looking arond for more bad guys.

Cryosanthia moves up beside Sabina and awaits healing. As she does, she flips her hands through some swift arcane gestures, her gloves start to glow a faint blue light. She makes washing and wiping motions towards herself, cleaning off the scorpion gore. It takes a little bit, but soon she is restored to her glimmering self. She follows this up with another casting that makes her eyes glow. Maintaining a ready grip on her weapon, she watches the healing magic, then keeps concentrating so she can search the corpses again. If everyone agrees that's a good idea, that is. "Anyone hear demonic voices in their head while we were fight? Understand what it said?"

"Affirmative. Negative," is MAC's answer to Cryosanthia's query. "This unit possesses no data on utilized communication format." It remains in Commander Sabina's vicinity.

The mission objectives remain incomplet. The place where the monsters were lurking is investigated. The bodies of the caravaners are found, as well as the stuff they were carrying. Their personal effects, the caravans and their loads were brought back. The nest suggests a mated pair. Beneath the bridge, there's a river.

The group decides not to search the river.

Nels suggests, "We're kinda messed up as we are, strength-wise." He's a goblin, and Sabina's weakened. "We might not be able to get back OK as we are. So lets do this in like two trips. We've taken out the big threat, we should be able to come back, or they can send people if we report on what we found."

Cryosanthia doesn't want to make two trips, and she's unwilling to leave bodies behind if she can help it. She stares back up the trail, exhaling, concentrating. "I think there's some suitable trees a little ways back that we could make some sleds out of. Also, I can carry a good load if it's arranged right, and I know how to arrange them."

The hideous laughter almost certainly saved MAC's life, and it may have saved Cryosanthia as well.

Sleds are possible, but who would do the hauling? Nels is a gobber and Sabina is weakened.

MAC-B1G's faceplate oscillates between taskforce members. "Construct sled, pull cargo to population nexus."

MAC-B1G can drag ~ 2000 lbs.

Cryosanthia, could give the MAC unit a run for its money.

So MAC-B1G and Cryosanthia can serve as pack units.

Cryo nods to MAC-B1G's audio output, "That's the plan, yes."

So it is enacted. They go a little ways back, find some suitable trees and fell them, then make some simple carts. The Goblin Knife proves its worth'. The group is able to construct everything. It takes several hours, and the bodies smell _bad_, and several of them are half-eaten."

Nels ewwws, uses his goblin army knife to make a facemask. Cryo and Sabina coordinate some rough refridgeration, wetting down a blanket and the corpses clothes, then freezing it with the Sith's ray of frost. They smell a little less.

At the end of the day, the group is able to pull together enough deadwood from further up the trail to make a travois, and haul the bodies from the nest back. It is nasty, smelly, and sad work, and Sabina will need assistance to get herself and her gear back to the city, thanks to the poison. You are thanks for your efforts, even if the khazad do wrinkle their noses at your cargo, paid, and sent off to repair yourselves and your gear.
