  • Title: Mean and Green, part 3
  • Emitter: Williwaw
  • Characters: Asmli, Victor, Donna, Ashes, Strike, Delilah
  • Place: Alexandrian Sewers
  • Time: Tuesday, August 18, 2020, 8:11 PM
  • Summary: The party of volunteers is exploring the sewers, with the stealthier ones out in front acting as scouts. Ashlee, sees something in the dark that the others don't, two turtle-people, and retrieves a weapon near them before returning to tell the party. Donna sneaks by, to be in position should introductions go poorly, but is noticed. The group advances, with Strike offering herself as a hostage, Delilah speakign diplomatically, and Ash providing some divine healing as well as leaving the glaive against the wall. Victor and Asmli move into position as backup guards. Mollified, the turtles share their story. They are two of four brothers, Theodore and Vonnegot, tasked to prevent a tear which is likely the anomaly the party was sent to investigate. Initially, they refuse to let the adventurers go any further, but are talked into deputizing them, so they can act under the turtles supervision. This is acceptable to all, and they readily agree, even though their foes are described and will be demons. Ugly. Demons.

The sewers. Most ordinary people dislike thinking about them, let alone exploring in them. They hardly get more than a footnote in the Adventurer's Correspondance School's primer manual. And yet, as with most diry jobs... someone's gotta do it. Thankfully, Alexandria has access to volunteers such as yourselves. Well, paid volunteers. Well, mercenaries getting paid to volunarily strike out into the depths. So.. volunteering is involved.

Armed with a device that will allegedly measure energies radiating from what might be a thinning of the walls between planes of existance, a pair of humans posessed with what seemed like more optimism than sense have requested you to find this anomoly so that the device might measure and perhaps quantify it for their study. The path has been relatively straight forward, though several signs have shown that you are not alone within these tunnels. Not surprising; there have been a rash of jobs to take care of under the city in the wake of certain revelations and recent activities, ranging from investigating the lengths to which the sewers design had been compromised for sinister intent to repairing damages done by would-be-heroes doing their best to fight against those sinister forces.

At last your dogged following of the map's route has brought you to this point. Your boots, and perhaps your senses of smell, may yet not survive this mission... but if the map is to be believed, you are close to its end. Having opted not to allow yourself to be distracted by following earier tracks leading out of this passage, you have pushed into its relatively narrow confines, single file, doing your best to avoid the trail of *UNDEFINED* slowly flowing down the middle. And you have been alerted to a presence up ahead.

At least Asmli need only worry about one boot. He stumps along, grumbling as quietly as he can under his breath, his footfalls more squish-clank than clump-stomp right now. He's cheerfully let the sneaky ones go first as he has _zero_ chance of being stealthy in his current state.

Victor volunteered to carry the device, and has been dutifully carrying it along all this time. He holds it balanced on his fingertips, with the elbow of that arm crooked. He keeps back as well, only moving forward when the rest of the party moves. He stays even further back than needed for a rear-guard, so that the sound of his own steps won't carry and ruin the scouts' chances for stealth.

Glancing at Strike, then the rest of the party, Donna nods. "Keep an eye out," she murmurs. "I don't like this whole setup, an' whatever got chased off might be alive to come back 'round. So... watch our backs, an' your own." And with that, the brawler draws in a slow breath -- through her mouth, thank you -- and starts easing herself down the tunnel, pressed close to the wall, to investigate the conversation up ahead.

The ashen Arvec Nar has been in the sewers before. Once. A rescue mission that failed, although some intriguing anomalies were discovered, and some bugs. She likes bugs, generally, and places where one can find them, though her preferences run towards catacombs and caves, as those tend to have less waste.

Her boots may indeed fail on this mission. An event she is looking forward to. New ones will be required, and that means shopping. Thoughts of this occupy her, when she isn't reading the map. Somehow she's ended up in charge of navigation. Her directions are minimal, in monotone, and quiet as she's supposed to be sneaking and scouting ahead.

She's amazingly good at that, vanishing completely. Even though her white skull-face should be visible, it isn't. Her directions come out of nowhere, "This way."

Strike nods as the offer's accepted, and she starts to ove along behind Donna, though to less effect than her comrades. Clearly all this meat is begining to degrade her performance.

Up ahead, there's a large... shell. A shell on the back of a humanoid who is leaning over another like themselves, hands pressed to his chest. A long staff with a bland on the end is propped up against the tunnel's wall within reach of the figure.

Once the scouts round the bend, after snuffing out the light, someone speaking can be heard speaking.. and it's a bit weird. If one focuss on the actual sounds, they are incomprehensible. Yet, at the same time, it's understandabe what's being said. "Oh, no, brother. Stay here with me. I've got you."

Victor moves along with Asmli and occasionally looks back. He keeps the box in front of his torso. Some half-understood instinct makes him attempt to keep it as close to the 'center' of the party as possible.

It's a slow, smelly creep up the tunnel, and not for the first time will Donna be ever so glad to get this job done, but the conversation ahead is ever so much more interesting than the noisome stench beneath her feet. The words spoken are confusing as hell, but... somehow the intent shines through. And the intent is even more puzzling. Crouching, Donna stays in place, to see if there's anything more to say.

Asmli is the opposite of stealthy, but at least has the good sense to keep the everburning torch down once he uncovers it, and peers forward into the darkness, trying to keep them within sight.

Strike moves along the wall as quietly as her animal protein shell allows, occaisionally touching the wall to make sure she diesn't get turned around, lamenting her absent darkvision. She may have to see someone about that. The oddly discernable babble brings the half-mul up short and she listens intently.

Delilah is stuck hanging back with the non-scouting party, while her sister is with the are-scouting party, and while the golden-haired sorceress accepts this division of labor -- partly because she's about as stealthy as a glowing fairy princess in a hall full of goblins -- she clearly doesn't like it. Still, there's really not much to do about it but wait, sticking with the group that's hanging back, with her arms folded across her chest.

"This is the worst," she mutters. "Stuck in the sewers is one thing, but being too far away to help if it goes wrong is the worst."

"Wait," comes Ashes' instruction, so quiet it's almost unheard. She's moving in the darkness ahead as if she's a part of it. Her valiant boots are keeping her safe, there is nary a sound. She's used to tombs, drifting along, being unnoticed. This helps with what she plans to do.

An action that goes unseen. And takes her into danger, which she eeks through.

The silence grows. Longer and longer. The mourner hasn't returned.

Until her voice speaks beside the party, low and monotone, "Ahead are two individuals. They have shells on their backs. One was touching the other's chest, doing something, I'm not sure what. He said encouraging words, as if the other was injured. I took his glaive. It's seen battle but isn't magical."

Even when one is prepared for it, seeing a disembodied white skull shape melt out of the darkness is *spooky.* And it takes a moment for Donna to register the Mourner's words, and a moment more to chew on them. Then, she takes her riskiest move yet; circling around the two unknowns, to be on the opposite side of them when the party makes itself known. Because at this point, introductions are *going* to be necessary.

Strike blinks in the dark as the Mourner returns with her report. Hmmm. One could assume there was some chance at diplomacy. The stolen glaive will be a likely sticking point, most likely. She exhales slowly through her nose and reaches into the bandolier pouch for one of her old friends; a little bag of flash powder. If things start getting surly, at least it may slow the downhill slide enough for reason to prevail. If nothing else, it'll provide a tactical advantage.

Delilah perks an eyebrow upwards, and hunhs softly. "So... giant walking turtles, then?" She shrugs her shoulders lightly, "So... I mean, that doesn't immediately mean that they're hostile right?" She hikes up her skirts with one hand to not get them in the muck and steps forwards, "So... where's my sister? Still there?"

Victor moves forward, not being quite so careful as he was before. "Turtles," he muses. Then: "Did she say she took their glaive?" he murmurs to the others.

Quickly, Asmli counts heads, moving forward with the others. "I s'pose so," he answers, but just for good measure, he offers the everburning torch to Delilah. "Mind holding that? I ain't gonna swing it 'less I have to," he promises, dropping the harness that holds his urgrosh to his back, retrieving the weaponbefore it can fall with a practiced move, and dropping the harness into his pack.

"Turtles. I could understand them, but not their language." Ash says, "They may not be able to understand us. I have comprehend languages. I can heal, if they need it. I could approach loudly with the torch and introduce myself."

At first Donna's decision to make sure these creatures were flanked before introductions begin seems to go well.. indeed, the turtle creature bent over his companion seems all but oblivious to the party making secret plans nearby. But then the one laying on the floor of the tunnel, in the muck, seems to come too from whatever the first was doing. "Brother!" You all hear the gasp, and then the sounds of feet stirring the muck. An exclamation. "My weapon!" And then, "HEY! STOP!"

"Thief!" comes the cry from one of them... definitely loud enough for all to hear. And everyone gets a taste of what the scouting party had earlier... concentrating on the word itself comes back with what seems like nonsense. Lyrical nonsense, but nonsense. Yet somehow you still understand the word. The accusation. There is the sound of some splashing (gross) and then the sound of steel sliding on leather and wood.

The turtle man who was kneeling scrambled for something in the muck.. looks like it was a scabbarded sword. Which he drew, and is shouting accusingly at Donna.

GAME: Ashes rolls diplomacy: (16)+0: 16

The mourner takes the torch from Delilah, keeping it covered until she has separated enough there's a chance the people behind her won't be visible. She withdraws it from the cover, holds it high and steps around the corner to approach the turtle people. She does so slowly enough it's obvious and stops at a distance which is hopefully non-threatening.

Of course, she is wearing tatty, threadbare grey clothes, with ropelike hair hanging to either side of her head. Her skull-face stands out brightly in the torch-light, and while her eyes reflect the flames, they are deep in dark sockets. The glaive is held vertically in her left hand, improperly weilded, but giving off a strong scythe vibe.

Ash speaks, her words loud enough but without any intonation. "I have your weapon. I can help you."

Now the light has been brought forth... and though those with the sharper vision of the elves and dwarves get a clearer picture, all can see what lay before you now. Donna has indeed managed to get on the other side of the two beings in the middle of the tunnel... two beings who look all the world like turtles given humanoid form. One is hard to make out, for he is laying supine upon the floor, but his green flesh, the shell on his back and the beaked head mark him as kin, at least in species, to the one who stands threateningly before you now. The standing one has his back to you, and indeed, it is a large shell upon his back, and he is facing Donna, his accusation likely leveled at her, and in his hands he wields a grand, single edged sword.. its scabbard discarded to his side. Though as Ashes brings forth the light, his head does turn to try and take in the lot of you without losing Donna.

GAME: Victor casts Shield/Still. Caster Level: 5 DC: 17

With a metallic grating sound and a final clink Victor's mouthplate slides into place over his lower face. He's not attempting stealth at all now and thus causes loud ringing sounds with each footfall and an occasional splash (ewww) as he moves forward. He's also chanting - the mouthplate makes his voice a bit muffled but he's speaking the Edlritch words of an arcane spell. "We're here on a peaceful mission," he adds.

The turtle-man-thing on the ground groans, sliding back to prop himself up against the tunnel wall... notably the one opposite to the one Donna slipped by along. He says a word... this one you don't understand.. but then follows it with, "Brother.. these aren't.. " He cuts off with another groan, and you can see he is obviously wounded. A blue sash which crosses from his right shoudler to his left hit is stained dark. Maybe it's the muck. Maybe it's something else, if the wounds are anything to go by.

"I'd listen to ya boy there," Donna drawls, spreading her gauntleted hands. "You look like you done enough fighting, an' we ain't been sent on a sweeping job. So take a breath, an' maybe we see what we can do?"

So far the Standing Turtle has definitely noticed his Glaive in Ashes's hand, and was none too pleased.. but, it doesn't look like he's not listening. He has reacted to everything he's heard, suggesting he understands it.

Strike tucks her flash powder back into her bandolier as things proceed... well, they're still proceeding, so no one's dead yet. She steps around the corner with empty hands and eases toward the turtle, trying to hold his eyes, "Your kinsman is wounded. We can help him, but clearly you don't trust us." She continues to move, comparatively slower than she prefers, holding her hands palms out and facing him if she gets close enough, "Let us heal him. If we break faith..." She takes a knee before him, "Kill me. If all goes well we can talk, yes?"

Delilah hands off the torch to Ashe, but as the talking starts, she steps forwards as well. And maybe the turtles aren't convinced yet, but they're talking at least. "Don't kill Strike, Please, we're here to help, and we will. We took the glaive, but it was a misunderstanding, not a theft, and we'll give it back." She speaks in the most soothing of terms as she walks forwards, holding her hands up non-threateningly as she approachs. "That's my sister," she adds, nodding towards Donna. "We're not going to hurt you, I promise. Why don't you tell us what happened?"

As the others go into salvage-the-situation mode, Asmli finds himself unable to add anything useful that might help. Diplomacy is hardly his bag of tricks, so he hangs back at the edge of the torchlight, urgrosh tip resting gently against the stone floor, weapon held between both hands in the pose of a sentinel, and simply waits in silence, watching all both in the torchlight and not.

Victor follows after Strike - she can move so much faster than he, especially while he's encased in heavy armor head to toe - and stops near her. "Offering yourself as a hostage seems unwise," he notes. His eyes shift back and forth as he splits his attention between both turtles. "But I'm sure you know what you're doing..."

The sword wielding, violet sashed turtle-being goes from looking eager to test the sword's cutting edge to a little less sure of his assumptions. As honest and admirable as her attempt to placate him was, Ashes's words don't seem to sway him. It might be because she has his weapon. It might be skull on her face. He even half turns... not so that his back is to Donna, but so that he might have a better angle on the arvec. Yet, words. Words from his brother, which give him noticeable pause.. and then there's the fact that everyone seems more interested in talking than fighting. Still, to those who have trained to watch for such things, his feet do shift, his grip tightens... and while the beaked, alien face is hard to read, the snapping of said beak is not. But then Strike strides forward. It isn't clear how close she is to getting a sword lunged at her gut... but as her offer is followed up by Delilah's plea, the violet turtle's body stops moving. Eyes show indecision. And then the one on the ground coughs again. "Brother... I don't think you'll win this fight.. and it's a fight they don't seem to want." The violet turtle hesitates a moment longer, then lowers his sword. "I want my sword-staff back."

GAME: Ashes rolls 2d6: (7): 7

Ash stands there silently, still, holding a torch which flickers and illuminates her and casts an eerie shadow on the wall. She stares steadily at the two turtle people, their glaive held casually. When she moves, it is to rest the weapon against the wall, ensuring it is well placed and won't slip or roll into the muck. She moves so she is closer and no longer interposed between the turtles and the weapon. She transfers the torch to her left hand, and reaching into her satchel takes out her holy symbol.

A small set of scales.

She shakes it, 'tink, tink', intoning, "Feiu of the Tears, they are not ready yet." Everyone near her feels an unsettling sensation, a shiver down the spine, the 'someone walking across your grave' feeling along with a deep calm. In its wake, injuries heal, bones knit, death's door is set further back. All the while, she never stops staring at the pair. The holy symbol put away, the torch transferred and she gestures invitingly at the glaive, stating the obvious, "It's yours."

"Attagirl, D," Donna says with obvious pride, as the incipient fight slowly decompresses into something a little less bloody. When Ashes steps up to ovver her prayers, the brawler turns to regard the standing brother, head tilting to one side. "So... who are you, an' how'd you manage to get shanked in a sewer? Cos' that's a story worth hearin'.

Despite the fact that the turtle hasn't swung yet, Strike makes no effort to alter her position, nor does she look from his face. She'd like to see it coming, this time.

Don't ask.

She continues to wait patiently as the others negotiate with and/or treat the brothers as they would, just in case things get squirrelly.

Similarly, Asmli in the back does not alter his position, but keeps his eyes moving, through light and darkness alike.

You know, just in case.

The sword-turtle tightens his eyes a little bit, then lets out what is unmistakenly a sigh. He kneels back down, retrieves the sword's scabbard so he might sheath the blade, then he hands it to his fallen brother before rising again. He gives Donna a look.. "Bah. Just.. stay there, alright?" he half demands, half asks before retrieving his weapon.

Meanwhile, the one on the floor sighs. This one is a sigh of relief.. you think... as Ashes channeling washes over him. He seems not to react as though it were the grave itself washing over him, instead welcoming it. "Thank you," he tells them, then looks directly at Strike. "My brother's not going to hurt you. We are..." He stops, says something incomprehensible again. Then follows with, "But we have.. ah.. mortal names you can use. I am Theodore, and my brother is Vonnegut." Then he goes on to grant Donna's wish as he explains.

They are brothers. Two of four, in fact, and they had stumbled across what Theo calls a 'loose stitch'. They had resolved to guard it until they could figure out how to set it right, when Theo had been ambushed. Vonnie had answered is call for aid only moments before your party had found them.

He finishes off with saying, "I did tell my brother we probably wouldn't win this fight.. but we can't let you go any further. It's too dangerous."

Her healing efforts complete, Ashlee returns to lurking, standing still and watching as others talk. She holds the torch, her other arm hanging at her side, as she stares at the two. There are stylized bones tattooed on the hand holding the torch, that's visible, the rest of her is covered by clothes and her normal grey skin blends well into the shadows cast by the flickering light. Her only movements are to turn her head as Vonnegut passes her to pick up his weapon, after which she looks back at Theodore. She nods once.

Victor retracts his faceplate, but his mouth underneath shows only a little more emotion. "No doubt it is dangerous...but that's why they sent us." He places subtle emphasis on 'us'. Then he holds up the box in front of him. "We were to bring this to the vincinity of a 'loose stitch' as you describe it."

Delilah beams at Donna's praise; a pleasant expression that she holds as she looks back to the turtles. "We're adventurers," she explains. "Dangerous is what we do. We take care of things that are troublesome for others who aren't as... fond of danger as we are. It's literally our jobs." She clasps her hands behind her back, and bobs her head once. "But why don't you tell us about this loose stitch, like Victor asked? Maybe we can work together to deal with it."

Strike gracefully pushes up to her feet as the weapon is sheathed and she looks to the wounded brother first, "So it seems." then looks to the swordsturtle, "You are a good brother." and gives a short, neat bow, but then allows the rest to speak, taking up a sentry position to make sure nothing comes up from another tunnel.

Vonnegut tenses, then swiftly, particularly for one of the bulk is kind carry, is back to his brother's side. Though his 'sword-staff' isn't held pointed at anyone.. it is, rather pointedly, held now. "I don't care if you're avorals in disguise.. we swore an oath. That loose stitch isn't to be mucked around with! We aren't even mucking around with it! It's for older and wiser than us. You. Shall. Not. Pass." Never mind that Donna is still, technically, on the other side.

Theo seems to consider, on the other hand. "You know brother... we could conscript them." Vonnie just seems to sputter at this. "No, really. Look. I think whatever ambushed me came from the stitch... our oath won't let us follow. But you could go after them. You might want to anyways... they'll cause all sorts of trouble here. And if you do that for us, then..." Theo hedges a little bit. "Well, then you're working for us and we can let you go look at the stitch. With supervision."

Ash nods. She's along to heal, and while she had the map and the scouting assignment, leading isn't her strength. She turns, looking at the others, waiting for them to agree, or disagree. Donna and Delilah get many of her gazes, the pair of brothers meeting a pair of sisters is an amusing coincidence for her. Finally she returns to staring at Vonnegut, and says, "Sorry."

And Donna clears her throat showtly after Vonnie's proclamation, as if to remind the guardian that she did, in fact, pass, and well before she was told she shall not.

"I like this plan," she says, completely stonefaced, nodding to Theo. "'M excited to be a part of it. An' it ain't like we ain't assuming it's gonna be dangerous. We're gonna sit a box in front of the stitch, an' if adventurin' rules pan out, we're gonna be under siege until it's done. You wanna supervise? We're glad to hear it, means someone as knows what the hell they're doin's gonna be around. So yeh, conscript away."

After a few moments, she furrows her brow. "...An' while we're at it, didn't you say there was four of you?"

Victor nods gravely. Classic side-quest. Victor has seen it so many times before. "That sounds reasonable and fair." A touch of flattery is often the best response to the quest-givers, Victor has found. He glances at the rest of the party. "Let's deal with whatever has emerged. Whatever it is, the turtles are most likely correct. It can't be good for Alexandria's sewers." He looks around at the rest of the party for signs of agreement.

Delilah nods, "I also like this plan. Conscript us; you can give the orders, we'll do the fighting." She draws her pistol, checks the chamber, and pushes it back into the holster. "I'm ready to go. If everyone else is, we should get things going before another ambush comes." She shrugs lightly, "Personally, I prefer to be the one doing the ambushing."

"Ok." Ashlee says. She hasn't moved beyond turning her head to stare at whomever is speaking. She adjusts the strap of her satchel on her shoulder, and tugs at her short jacket. She appears ready and willing.

The collective responses seem to more or less set the one called Theo at ease. Vonnie remains tense initially, but then, surprisingly perhaps, Ashes's apology.. as much as it may or may not have sounded like something she read from a book it may have been.. does seem to find purchase upon him and he, too, lets his hold of his weapon relax a little bit. And then he actually ducks his head a little bit at Strike's praise.

"Oh, thank the heavens.." Theo declares. "Yes, our other brothers are back home.. one is resting for the next rotation in our guard duty here.. the other one is looking for our master. So.. this is it, for a while," he spreads his hand, perhaps unaware that he basically just told the party that there won't be any reinforcements. It's a good thing they're good people, RIGHT? "And.. the creatures you're following? Demons. Not sure what kind.. but pretty sure they're just foot soldiers for something bigger. A scouting party. But.. they're trouble. Be careful."

"Agreed." Strike replies simply, glancing back to the group to see which way they're intending to go. The talk of the brothers looking for their master, for a moment, gives the half-mul a look like she was kicked in the guts, but she covers it quickly, "I've faced demons before. How did they smell?" Because that's the most important part.

Don't ask . "Demons, yaaaaayyyyy," Donna says, singsong and quietly and somehow managing to mean the exact opposite of both word and tone. "Well we ain't been laid up in bed for a week lately, what the hell." Blowing out a sigh, she shakes her head. "Let's go, then. Oh, an'... Just so's you know? There was some tracks on our backtrail we passed up snoopin' on. Down the way we came, an' to the right up the main passage. Unno if it's some demons or your master or what, but... Someone was runnin' that way, an' bein' chased. Either way..."

Delilah ughs and grits her teeth at the mention of demons. "Demons. Lovely." She pauses, and shakes her head. "Aww, whatever," she mutters, and walks over to stand beside her sister. "Let's... just think of them as bandits with really big teeth and stuff. Really, really ugly bandits, that really need to get beat up, real bad."

"That makes sense. Several things have been coming through from Hell." Ash says, again in monotone. Everything sounds like she's reading it, her words have little inflection, making her sound distant and bored.

And a plan is hatched.
