  • Summary: A lucht caravan gets trolled, Carver helps dispatch them and Schara flames the trolls in response.

A peaceful countryside road's serenity is broken by a scream, echoed by a few more. A small family of Lucht, riding many astride a comfortable wagon with colorful pitches point in terror behind them as their ponies frantically try to pull them to safety. It does not take long to realize what has driven the driver to snap his reins for urgency.

A great, spindly creature with arms so long that even with its loping run the claws drag through the dirt. Its appetite for flesh so succulent has drool winding down its tapered jaw, mouth agape and ridged with terrible broken teeth. Even now two arrows fired from crossbows from the Lucht are snapped off as wounds close, no pain or fear apparent. Only the taste for the hunt.

The troll's keening cry is a death knoll for many who travel through these highlands.

It had been a rather pleasant day, so far. Schara was just returning from one of the outlying townships around Alexandria, leaving enough time however to return before nightfall, in case of dangerous creatures out on the hunt.

What she was not expecting, or at least expecting much less, was for dangerous creatures to be out hunting already. The artificer is struck a bit confused down by the side of the road as she tries to make herself as small as possible with the wagon tearing down the road.

The momentary freeze was eventually broken by seeing what was coming. Even if they could escape, there was no guarantee that carriage would be able to outpace it, so she quickly dropped the pack she had been carrying, readying their arms, armor, armor arms and arms on arms for combat.

A second keening hunter's cry joins the first. Another troll barrels down from the hill on an intercept course, a young Lucht with pink hair pointing out yet another threat, begging their straining horses for more speed; more urgency. Anything to get them to safety. They rumble past Schara and despite their own danger, they call out a warning. Run!

A third cry, but different. It's more like an owl hooting, as from a nearby pond, someone astride a crimson horse races toward what is clearly becoming a flashpoint of blood and violence.

Carver's hair streams behind her, face covered in wild war paint. Astride Deathless she races into the fight, the Red Aldui's horseshoes glowing enchanted crimson as they cover ground at incredible speed. Avoiding the intercepting troll, she falls into pursuit behind the larger of the pair, arrows thunking into its thick hide with meaty splashes of blood.

If the troll is concerned by this, it isn't apparent, but it does stop its pursuit and roars at her in challenge. MORE MEAT!

The wagon bumps and rumbles pass the melee, the straw-hat wearing driver giving the heroic Schara a panicked glance. "Stay alive, we'll find help!" They sound sincere despite their fear, the ponies working in tandem to keep themselves out of the troll's rending claws. Where they could find help? That isn't quite as clear but mayhaps a passing patrol is nearby!

Against her better judgement, or perhaps from recalling a treatise she had read on troll regeneration in fields of medical science, Schara had decided to jump into action. "Get away from here, as quick as you can! I think I might be able to scare them off!" She shouted to the passerbies. It wasn't a particularly certain notion, but at the very least, one uncertain death was better than numerous near guaranteed.

The coils on their left arm, unfolded into a strange contraption of artifice, roared to life quite literally, as there was an explosion of flames from the weapon that engulfed much of the arm, and more of the troll chasing the carriage, burning it badly before it dissipated.

The troll's foul breath washes over Schara. The first, whose ugly mug shows unhealed acid wound splashed across its missing left eye, swipes at her with nails scratching shrilly off her armor. She feels first the flash of pain as a nail breaks off into a gap. The second troll is more successful, and even as fire begins to burn out across its great chest, they rake and rend and take a chunk of flesh from her shoulder. The teachers did not go into great detail about troll culture but they way their eyes gleam with excitement shows the whole truth. Elf flesh! Tasty treat for empty stomachs!

Carver digs her heels into Deathless's side, kicking them into advance to aid her unknown ally. More arrows punch and puncture, the first pair planting through the exposed side of Hungy's throat, the beast toppling over. Is it dead?

Angy growls as another barbed instrument plants into its thigh but does not break its stare with Schara. No fear. Even the fire only caused a brief hesitation.

Round Two - Init 22.

"Shoot the downed one with fire! Now!" Carver yells at Schara, as the woman goes to get some distance. She can see blood flowing freely from the injured artificer, even as a familiar enchantment sends her limbic system into overdrive. Angy, arrow breaking off in its thigh as its regenerative physiology kicks in, swipes and claws but a rearing Deathless gives them just enough space to avoid the rending blows.

Schara watches, perhaps with horror, as Hungy's wounds begin to seal close and it rises on unsteady feet and begins to look around for more meat to taste.

Schara was not however expecting the second troll out from the side. Their armor was more made to ensure that they wouldn't be crippled by the weight, not as much for actual protection from claws and bludgeoning. At least the armor made them look less rough than they were as they tried to make some distance. Pulling a small bronze device out of a pouch, they flip one switch that causes it to emit a sharp jolt of lightning that jumps from the artificer to the hunter and her horse, which had the odd but familiar effect of speeding them up.

Carver unleashes another flurry of arrows, a veritably volley that stumbles the troll back a foot. Deathless flails their crimson hooves, but though they batter the troll, they do not seem to do any actual damage through its thick hide.

Angy leans in and BITES deep into Deathless, near the saddle. The pained whinny seems to drive Carver into a fury, her young face twisted into a mask of hate from her rage and warpaint. The troll pulls back, swallowing and wallowing with the taste of meat and blood.

With some modicum of space and slightly less threat of immediately being torn to shreds, the artificer is able to take aim at the fallen troll, coils in the arm heating red hot again, with another, less intense gout of flame that engulfs the Troll, but it does not go out like last time, instead leaving the beast a burning Pyre on the ground for some time.

Hungy's screams are no longer of the thrill of the hunt, but of raw terror. Fire consumes it, despite its flailing, burning bright in death; trolls do not have many predators but the heat of the artificer's coiled weapon might be one of them.

Carver should swap to her sidearm, but chooses not to. Instead, she feels the troll's claw as it rakes across her lead arm but does not yelp in the pain. Instead, she plants three arrows into the creature's face. As it falls, Deathless too begins to stomp upon its corpse. She dismounts already reaching for spark and tinder... but looks to Schara, and nods. Why bother? This woman has a fire cannon.

Schara moves to burn the other Troll as it falls, preparing to fire on it. But perhaps having a chunk of their shoulder missing caused problems, or perhaps it was just a reflex from the pain, but their arm jerked suddenly, and instead of burning the remaining Troll, a poor tree that was in the way past it catches alight. Thankfully the ground was damp from the nearby pond.

Angy's eyes suddenly pop open and its open maw lunges at Carver, who was standing above it. The ranger only dodges thanks to the increased reflex speed that Schara's spell granted her, stumbling back with a curse and reaching for her hatchet as the troll readies itself to attempt again.

Deathless bites the troll's arm, and the giantkin simply yanks it free, skin ripping off and healing just as quickly. Carver uses the distraction to slip to the side and draw her axe, but the hatchet simply does not have the power of her bow and only scars the thick hide and nothing more. "Shoot it again!"

There's a yelp of pain from the Artificer as they unceremoniously perform some percussive maitenance on their shoulderblade with their closed fist. But it seemed to have the desired effect, and their next shot hits true, setting the remaining troll ablaze.

Carver takes a calming breath when the troll falls over, burning quickly. It does not rise. She walks toward Schara, and nods, "I have some heal--" The rumble of a returning wagon distracts her, the Lucht returning over the hill. They have lit torches and reloaded crossbows, ready to help their saviors... but no longer needed. The straw-hat guide calls forward, "We have a cleric! Do you need healing?"

The ranger quietly mounts Deathless, seeing that the danger is done. She gives no farewell to her ally. She simply quickly departs without another word.

Schara watches the second troll burning away, and seeing no more coming to investigate, The artificer finds the tree she was already at suitable to hold her weight. The whirring and noises from their armor die down, and Schara leans heavily against the tree. "No, tend to your... horse first. I have healing for myself, and you both likely saved my life." They answer, turning their head enough to catch the approaching caravan. "Or perhaps a cleric will work for that too."

Before they are able to consider anything further, turning back the ranger is already on their way, and the artificer is left to hitch a ride back with the lucht. It was a shame that their pack had been burnt to a crips by a troll falling over it, though.
